"Sera: Angels are the guardians, warriors and messengers of goodness. We are made from the same matter that all celestial beings are forged from - pure Light.
Serenity: And star dust! Don't forget! Lotsa star dust!
Sera: Serenity...
Serenity: S- Sorry! Sorry.
Sera: Ahem... We are all children of God and Asherah, and as such, we serve as condults between their will and humanity...
Serenity: My turn? Ahem-... We live in harmony and peace and dedicate ourselves to guiding human souls to Heaven! For in Heaven, every soul will live in grace, compassion, and mirth.
"
— Sera and Serenity in the opening narration of Holy Hell.

Angels are a supernatural, celestial race of creature, consisting of either of innocent/reformed souls, or native citizens that inhabit Heaven.

History[]

In the Beginning, Asherah created most of the Heavenborn Angels from light and the stars to populate her and God's kingdom of Heaven. Later, Angels became direct descendants of the Tree of Life; every leaf that falls from the tree of life would blossom into an Angel.

Description[]

Angels mainly appear in forms that bear a resemblance to humans, albeit with pure white or blue-colored skin and large wings protruding from their backs which they can hide. In addition, Heavenborn angels lack ears and have little to sometimes no internal organs that humans possess. Conversely, many Heavenborn angels do resemble animals, such as the cherubim resembling sheep, deer, bees, and other woodland creatures. Similar to how demons have "full demon forms", each and every angel is capable of shifting into an eerie, Lovecraftian-like aesthetic resembling the depiction of Seraphim angels. Generally, angels who naturally have a more eldritch appearance a considered the most powerful of angels such as Ophanim.

In the angelic life cycle, every Angel begins as a cherub until a certain adolescent age, from which point they undergo a transformation into a full angel, though some rare angels never transition and simply remain cherubs for the rest of their existence.

Due to their closeness and near-universal loyalty to God, the ultimate power in the Universe, angels are one of the most powerful species in the Universe. Every angel, saint or Heavenborn, holds immense mystical powers with limitless potential. Their holy nature grants them dominion over demons, as well as protection from dark magical forces. The most powerful of angels, primarily the archangels and seraphim, are capable of creating or annihilating entire celestial bodies, and can reshape all creation to their liking. The immense powers that angels hold is precisely how Lucifer was able to effortlessly create take over Hell after his fall from Heaven.

Culture[]

Angels are deeply passionate for music and the arts, constantly humming or singing in the streets of their home without a care in the world. It is common for angels to sing on the streets of Heaven, and for Heavenborn schoolchildren to sing songs praising their rulers such as God, Asherah, and the archangels.

For the most part, angels are very polite and value manners, order, and decorum.

Angels are extremely loyal to God, Asherah, and humanity, widely believing that protecting humanity is one of the most important things an angel can do in Creation. In Heaven, it is considered extreme taboo to use the Lord's name in vain, as shown by Keenie lashing out at Collin for invoking God's name.

Angels celebrate many holidays that are celebrated on Earth, most notably Christmas and Easter. Heaven has its own exclusive holiday known as the Celebration of God, which takes place somewhere between Christmas and the Extermination.

Powers[]

  • Angelic Power: Every angel is born with magical and mystical abilities which they can hone to become extremely destructive and powerful entities. An angel's power appear appears to fall in line with their personal skill and hierarchical position in Heaven; the Exterminators, who are at the very bottom in Heaven's hierarchy, are considerably weaker than other angels, though still very dangerous threats towards lower demons, sinners, and even Overlords, while seraphim and archangels possess unfathomable divine, even god-like power, enabling them to use their powers to their full potential, create sentient beings using their magic, and even reshape creation to their image.
  • Aura: Angels are perpetually enveloped by an invisible, defensive aura that shields them from external threats, especially those of a demonic nature. The aura melts projectiles and magic before they can strike the angel, and sends a sharp electric charge through any assailant who attempts to harm them. When Alastor, under Satan's influence, attempted to attack Forti with demonic tentacles, the tentacles were vaporized by Forti's aura before it could even make contact with him.
  • Angelic Transformation: All angels are capable of shifting into a more powerful, Lovecraftian form resembling the biblical depiction of Seraphim angels.
  • Cloudwalking: All angels can walk, sit, and even travel on clouds without falling through them, treating said clouds as if they were a solid object.
  • Dimensional Travel: Archangels and cherubs can open portals to alternate dimensions with a simple hand motion. They are also one of the few species that can enter and exit Purgatory as they please.
  • Flight: Every angel has a pair of retractable wings that grant them the ability to hover and fly at varying speeds.
  • Healing: All angels possess a healing touch which can cure sickness and heal the devastating wounds of themselves and others.
  • Immortality: Angels are biologically immortal. As with sinners, winners stop aging when they ascend to Heaven and are permanently stuck in the age they died in (as evidenced by the seven angels still resembling children, despite being billions of years old, chronologically). Heaven-born angels appear to stop aging when they reach the age of an adult, and seem to be incapable of dying via old age, as shown by Adina still appearing very youthful despite being a billion years old, chronologically.
    • Self-Sustenance: Despite being immortal, angels are able to consume food and similar sustenance, and winners can apparently still feel the need to eat, as shown when Simon complained about being hungry, though it is unknown if they can suffer from starvation. It is known that, at the very least, archangels do not require food to survive, as shown by Forti surviving in Limbo without any sustenance for billions of years. Angels are also oxygen independent, and can withstand being in the deep vacuum of space.
  • Light Manipulation: As beings of pure light themselves, angels have strong connections to light and can shape and manipulate it to their liking. Lesser skilled angels are capable of summoning a small light to illuminate their surroundings, while the more skilled angels can perform great feats using light, such as forging weapons out of solidified photons. The light that angels project is a holy light which can cause a demon's skin to melt. All angels possess an inner glow where their bodies illuminate in dark surroundings, allowing them to see their surroundings.
  • Thermal Resistance: All angels are impervious to the absolute zero temperatures and cosmic radiation of outer space.

Trivia[]

  • All Heavenborn angels are created by Asherah. Initially, Asherah forged angels from light and stars, but in more modern times it is mentioned that all angels are leaves from the Tree of Life, implying that any leaf that fall from the Tree of Life takes on a life as its own and blossoms into an angel.
  • One of the series' authors said that angels have the belief that when a Heavenborn angel dies, Asherah preserves their soul and they will be reborn in The Empyrean, the Morningstar family's kingdom.
    • However, it is also believed by angels that winners are incapable of being saved upon their double deaths, due to the Original Sin's influence preventing them from achieving ultimate salvation.
  • The halo colors of angels denote their hierarchical positions: Seraphim display white halos, Archangels have golden halos, winners and cherubs bear purple halos, and Exorcists are distinguished by black halos.
  • "Winged/flying rodents" is often used in Hell as a derogatory slur against angels.
  • All angels are bonded with Heaven's Light, meaning they can communicate with it while other species hear nothing.
  • When winners are reborn they are given perfect bodies, meaning that any birth defects, disabilities, mental illnesses or signs of aging they might have had in life are gone. This in contrast to sinners, who not only retain disabilities and illnesses they had in life, but are also stuck in the age and condition that they perished in.
  • Angels bleed golden ichor as opposed to red blood.
  • In Holy Hell, it is implied by Lucifer that male angels do not have any genitalia, based on his confused reaction to seeing Adam's penis, and calling it a "danglehopper".
    • Despite this, it is strongly hinted at in "Make New Friends But Keep Roo" that Azrael possesses genitalia. It is likely angels could have much different reproductive anatomy from humans, or Azrael simply gave himself genitalia since it seemed cool.
  • In Holy Hell, it is revealed that angels love stardust and star twinkles, and consume them as a spice, with Ms. Hartfelt claiming that angels go "madder than a march hare" at the prospect of getting some.
