- "The Hellspawn rejected our light, so we help remove them from it and keep them in the shadows of Hell. We allow them to live, an example of the angelic order's merciful will, but their population must be... Controlled, until they learn their place and cease being an annoying, persistent thorn in the side of our family. (Michael grins) Until then, at least they make for an exciting fight."
- — Michael to Azrael on demons.
Saint Archangel Michael Morningstar of Heaven is a major antagonist in Hazbin Hotel: Journey to the Light.
Regarded as the most powerful angel and protector of humanity, Michael is the head of the Virtues as well as the chief archangel of the angelic order as a whole. He is also the angel closest to God, as well as the adoptive father figure of Joan of Arc. Regarded as a symbol of hope and leadership within the Heavenly realm, the other Virtues and the angelic order worship and submit to him as the righteous son of God.
In the past, Michael defeated his eldest twin brother, Lucifer, during the War in Heaven, casting the fallen prince down to Earth and sending his army flying away in terror. Afterward, he assumed the role of head archangel of Heaven after Forti's selfless sacrifice in the battle against Satan. However, driven by a desire for divine glory, and believing his psychopathic young brother did not deserve to serve God directly, he willingly relinquished his position as head archangel over Heaven to his brother Azrael, opting to serve directly as God's second and leading crusades across the cosmos with the Virtues.
In the present, he resides with his siblings, Joan, God, and Asherah in the Empyrean.
Biography
Background
Michael was created by God on the night of Heaven's creation, mirroring Lucifer's birth with the dawn of Heaven's sun. Born from a star infused with the very spirit of humanity itself, he was the evening star to complement his twin brother Lucifer, the morning star.
Jack shit is known about Michael's childhood outside of Lucifer saying he was popular with the ladies, he loved playing trojans with his siblings, and he observed Lucifer and Sera's prom dance.
During his earlier tenure as archangel, Michael was a stern and very harsh commander, prioritizing a militaristic approach over familial bonds, taking his position with the upmost seriousness. This rigid demeanor extended to all his siblings, whom he treated more as soldiers than family members. Among his siblings, he held particularly high expectations for his youngest brother, Azrael, who Michael grew to outright despise for his disregard towards humanity.
In the midst of the War in Heaven, Michael fought on behalf of God against Lucifer, consumed by fury at the devastation Lucifer had brought to Heaven, including the murder of their brothers. Their fierce battle concluded with Michael decidedly emerging victorious, ruthlessly using his strength to break and cripple Lucifer's wings, embarrassing the prideful prince in front of his entire army. As Lucifer laid defeated and in pain, Michael conjured a divine chain which clamped around Lucifer's neck, painfully holding the kneeling prince up to face his terrified army as further humiliation. Michael then used his holy abilities to spawn pure white, hovering spears aimed at his brother's body as Lucifer pathetically begged for his life.
Before Michael could bring the spears down on his brother, Metatron and Zadkiel intervened, with the former delivering instructions not to end Lucifer's life and Zadkiel going as far as to shield Lucifer with his own body, begging Michael to snap out of his rage and spare Lucifer despite his crimes, not wanting Michael to stoop down to Lucifer's level. Their pleas, particularly Zadkiel's, broke through to Michael, who instead dragged Lucifer off and suspended him by the neck off the side of Heaven to issue a stern warning to his fallen brother; return to Heaven, or Michael would finish the job. The Virtue released Lucifer, watching his fallen brother plummet down to Earth with a somber and pain-filled expression. Following this, a single vengeful glare from Michael instilled such dread in Lucifer's army that they chose to willingly flee from Heaven out of sheer terror of Michael's wrath.
Subsequently, Michael assumed the position of the top archangel in Forti's stead. During his leadership, Michael took the initiative to orchestrate an annual event aimed at curbing the demon population, outlining the strategic layout for this significant endeavor. This decision reflected his commitment to safeguarding Heaven's interests and maintaining a balance in the celestial realm. This idea would be finalized and adopted by Azrael, and become Extermination Day.
In time, Michael made the pivotal choice to step down from his role as the commander of the Heavenly Host, and the motive behind this decision was profound. He came to realize that Azrael and his siblings were chosen for a sacred duty—to uphold and safeguard the Universe in concert with their Father, God. Michael, driven by a desire for the distinct honor of serving directly under God, made the move to replace the young and inexperienced Azrael as the commander, feeling as though Azrael-due to his indifference to the War in Heaven- did not deserve the luxury of serving God. As a result of this transition, Azrael found himself remaining in Heaven, separated from his siblings who embarked on their divine mission alongside their Father. This pivotal moment marked a significant shift in the celestial hierarchy, with Michael relinquishing his command to pursue a different path, one that allowed him to serve God in a unique and distinguished capacity.
As the centuries rolled on, and Michael embarked on countless missions alongside the Seven Heavenly Virtues across the vast cosmos, he underwent a profound transformation. These cosmic journeys allowed him to grasp the invaluable nature of familial bonds and the unparalleled camaraderie that bound his siblings together. Over time, these shared experiences and challenges began to soften Michael's heart, prompting him to open up and embrace a newfound sense of empathy. As he grew closer to his siblings, Michael's stern and distant demeanor gradually gave way to a more compassionate and approachable persona. Becoming a true savior of humanity, he learned to appreciate the significance of empathy, unity, and the love that ties families together.
When God chose Joan of Arc to lead France to victory against English invaders, Michael and several other saints appeared before Joan during one of her visions, guiding and inspiring her to fulfill her divine mission to lead France to victory. Upon Joan's death, Michael ordained her a saint, and she subsequently became his second.
Moreover, Michael set out to confront the past, particularly his harsh treatment of Azrael. Filled with remorse for the wrongs he had inflicted upon his younger brother, Michael made the choice to return to Heaven and find reconciliation with Azrael, determined to mend the bonds he had once broken and foster a newfound sense of harmony within the divine family.
Events of Hazbin Hotel: Journey to the Light
Chapter 5
In "Extermination Day: Part 1", after centuries of absence from the sacred land of Heaven, Michael's return sends shockwaves throughout the celestial realm. The Speaker of God was even shocked by his entrance, bowing his head in reverence. Azrael, who normally exuded a boisterous demeanor, was particularly terror-stricken by his brother's arrival, fearing that Michael would see and undo what Azrael has done to Heaven. Fleeing from his office in Haven, Azrael sought refuge and comfort in the presence of Lute. Within his sanctum, Michael patiently awaited Azrael's return, his cordial greeting contrasting with the tremor of fear that gripped his younger brother. Despite the tension in the air, Michael casually offered Azrael and Lute a canteen of the finest celestial wine, congratulating them on the birth of their son Azuriel and apologizing for being unable to attend his birth, due to having several timelines to save.
The tension escalated as Lute, furious and protective of Azrael, positioned herself firmly between the two archangels. She demanded an explanation from Michael, questioning his presence in Heaven when he should have been by the side of God. Michael, ever self-assured, responded by asserting his status as an archangel of Heaven, prompting Lute to declare her loyalty solely to Azrael. He chuckled at her fiery resolve, even daring to flirt and taunt her, displaying a remarkable lack of fear in the face of Lute's fury.
Azrael anxiously instructed his female subordinates to escort Michael to the dinner table. As they sat down, an unspoken rivalry of stature played out, with Michael's imposing presence casting Azrael in a smaller light. Despite their fraught history, Michael extended a silent olive branch by permitting Azrael to pour the celestial wine, symbolizing a newfound willingness to regard his brother as an equal. Lute's unwavering gaze bore into Michael as Azrael, trembling, attempted to serve the wine, but an accidental spill marred the tablecloth. Michael responded with a good-natured chuckle and a shake of his head. Taking charge, he reached for the wine canteen and filled the mugs for himself, Azrael, and Lute. Lute's reaction was swift and decisive; she hissed and knocked her mug off the table, which noticeably wiped Michael's grin off his face for a moment. Lute then tasted Azrael's wine for herself to ensure his safety, willing to die for him in the preposterous event that it was poisonous. In any other circumstance, such an affront might have ignited an explosive confrontation, but on this occasion, an uneasy truce hung in the air, though the tension remained palpable among the three angels.
As they sought to bridge the gap created by their absence, Michael delved into the state of affairs in Heaven, a topic he hadn't explored in quite some time. Azrael, his nerves palpable, hesitantly relayed that Heaven had remained virtuous and orderly throughout their extended absence. In his report, he subtly alluded to his own role in the Extermination, hinting at the influence he had wielded when Azrael was in his formative training. Michael acknowledges the persistent challenge posed by demons, whose numbers keep growing and corrupting mortals' minds. Despite their annoyance and their constant presence as a thorn in the side of the celestial family, Michael says his commitment to suppressing them without entirely erasing them, recognizing their place in Creation. He even finds a silver lining in the ongoing struggle, admitting that demons provide an entertaining adversary in the cosmic battle.
Michael, seizing the opportunity for a candid conversation, reciprocated by sharing their recent endeavors. He spoke of the Seven Virtues' adventures, recounting their relentless pursuit of Colossi, beings sent spiraling back into the enigmatic Dark Tapestry. He also touched upon Raphael's remarkable discovery, a cure for cosmic STDs that promised to alleviate a long-standing concern among celestial beings. In a dramatic turn of events, Michael drew his sword, revealing the meticulously repaired Excalibur, leaving Azrael and Lute utterly astonished. With a solemn demeanor, Michael confirmed Forti's demise, explaining that they had retrieved his body during a mission to Purgatory. The Virtues brought the legendary sword back to God, who mended the blade and bestowed it upon Michael.
However, the moment of attempted camaraderie took a somber turn as Michael's gaze fell upon the various portraits depicting Azrael slaying demons and the grandiosity of his brother's sanctum. Sitting from the table, he felt a profound sadness at the sight of what Azrael had become, realizing that he should have remained in Heaven and allowed Azrael to journey with their siblings instead of burdening him with military responsibilities. Michael accepted responsibility for his past actions, acknowledging that he should have prioritized their fraternal bond over his role as a commander. Michael's heartfelt apology momentarily boosted Azrael's confidence, leading him to insist that Michael had raised him correctly, declaring himself the most revered and accomplished archangel in Heaven's history. In a tone laced with disdain, Azrael declared that he had outgrown Michael, and with Lute by his side, he left the room. Left alone in the office, Michael was consumed by a profound sense of sadness and guilt. He stood in silence, reflecting on the consequences of his actions and the growing chasm between him and his brother, before ultimately departing, presumably to rejoin the Virtues.
Personality
- "Archangel Michael is our grandest Virtue! A bringer of justice! Second to the One Above Heaven! A knight divine, but not without an honorable heart. The good he has done for our Kingdom tells a better tale than I could ever dream!"
- — Metatron about Michael.
Michael is a paragon to all archangels; extremely devout, often stone-faced, courageous, the works. He has an intimidating, larger-than-life presence, since his strength, determination, and perfectionist ways are not something many can measure up to. Many who meet him are quite intimidated by him, when, in reality, he's quite a big softie towards other angels. To Michael, God comes first, then his family, and then humanity itself. Michael cherishes angelkind and especially humanity, believing the latters to be the best part of Creation, and will go to any lengths to protect the angels and winners of Heaven, showing a compassionate side to all under his protection.
In a bit of a twist, Michael has a distinctly human personality for an archangel and is, in many ways, one of the most "human" members of the Morningstar family - fitting, since he was created using the essence of the human spirit. He has an informal, blunt, and plain-spoken speech pattern, and is unafraid to joke around and share a drink of the finest wine with his family. In his time, Michael has experienced many human flaws, such as anger and even hubris.
Due to Lucifer's fall and his pushing away Azrael, Michael is very protective of the other Virtues - his siblings -, and his adoptive daughter Joan of Arc, promising his family that they will never again relive the pain they endured endured from Lucifer's betrayal. He harbors a deep resentment toward Lucifer for his betrayal, but struggles with conflicting feelings, as he still wishes he could redeem Lucifer, even though he believes that to be impossible. He does whatever he can to protect his remaining siblings and adoptive daughter from corruption - even when they don't need his protection - , driven by guilt over his perceived failure to prevent Lucifer and Azrael's falls from grace.
Michael embodies qualities of a great leader; confidence, bravery, and charisma, making him a natural leader revered by the angels and feared by wrongdoers. He takes his position very seriously and is extremely strong-willed, with many failing to convince him otherwise once he has made a decision. He has cultivated of aura of trust and worship within the Heavenly ranks, and is deeply respect by nearly all of his fellow celestials. A father to his men, he is willing to throw himself in potential harm's way to prevent any causalities of his forces. However, he is also known to be quite the perfectionist, expecting only the best and accepting only the most devout souls into his armies.
However, while Michael is, indeed, a big softie towards angels, he is utterly ruthless towards demons refusing to see any nuance in them besides being beasts of evil. In contrast to most of the archangels, Michael finds joy in combat and appears to relish the ongoing conflict against demons. He deeply lacks an understanding of the intricacies surrounding demons, such as their capacity to do good, and holds the belief that Hellborn are incapable of redemption or exhibiting goodness, at least in the manner that a human is capable of. He shows a lack of compassion towards the demonic, viewing them as nuisances that need to be controlled. He speaks of the "mercy" of letting demons live, though this is used as a tool to keep demonkind subjugated, rather than a genuine act of kindness. Furthermore, he laid the foundations of the annual Extermination and played a role in inspiring Azrael to implement measures to control their population.
Despite establishing the annual Cleanse, he does not take pleasure in the slaughtering of sinners and views it more as a "desperate times call for desperate measures" deal, though he does hold genuine resentment towards sinners for their choices to reject Heaven, since their sins bring great pain to his Father.
Michael's demeanor can often appear confrontational and overly stern to outsiders and especially to demons. He speaks confidently, as if he always knows what he is doing, and has a deep understanding of his duty as a guardian of humanity. He does not grant trust easily, his trust being reserved primarily for God and not much else. He is even wary and has trust issues with the other Virtues, still greatly affected by the betrayal of Lucifer.
While he may often exhibit ruthless and inflexible traits with an astounding lack of openness and reason, often keeping the Virtues out of the loop, Michael still harbors a deep affection for his family and holds humanity dear, considering them an extension of his own kin. Despite the emotional barriers wrought he sets up for good reason, a genuine heart of gold remains buried within him. He made a genuine attempt to apologize to Azrael for his harsh treatment, gifting rare celestial wine to him and Lute to make up for his absence for Azuriel's christening, and reacted somberly when his brother threw his apology in his face and used it as an opportunity to mock him. His softer side is especially evident in his relationship with Joan of Arc, whom he mentors, taught how to read and fight, and cherishes as his second and daughter figure.
Despite his initially formidable presence, Michael can show a lighthearted demeanor off-battle and seldom allows himself to be genuinely angered, even in the face of disrespect. He is quite a showman when not on the battlefield or meeting new people, approaching life with a nonchalant and laid-back attitude. Upon his return to Heaven and his encounter with Azrael, Michael displayed an unflinching demeanor, even going so far as to flirtatiously provoke Lute, the most vicious and formidable Exterminator, by gently grabbing her chin. Furthermore, he takes great pride in his accomplishments, often boasting about saving entire timelines as if it were a routine chore He also displayed remarkable tolerance towards Lute's blatant disregard for his archangelic title and held a deep admiration for her fiery nature. However, it is likely that he only tolerated her challenging tone and disrespect due to her allegiance to Azrael, who Michael was attempting to make amends with.
Although he is rather subtle about it and is not actively violent, Michael is very bloodthirsty and bellicose, living up to being a warrior and archangel. In contrast to Forti, Michael revels in a good fight - whether he's in it or not - and tends to get annoyed when his opponents fail to offer any challenge. Michael indeed relishes the fear he instills in demons, leveraging his control over them to maintain their subjugation within the shadows of Hell. He is also a ruthless fighter who will go for the kill, in some cases even when it is not necessary. He displayed this when he tried to execute Lucifer after brutalizing him during the War in Heaven, even as Lucifer found himself defeated. Though, in this case, Michael's fury was not without justification, for Lucifer's heinous actions had brought on the murder of seven of their brethren and had wrought unfathomable devastation throughout the War in Heaven.
Michael initially harbored a side driven by the pursuit of glory, occasionally leading him to make rash and irresponsible decisions. This was particularly evident when he willingly transferred his role as the commander of the Heavenly Host to his younger brother, even though Azrael was still in his adolescence. Michael's motivation was a desire for personal recognition and the glory of serving God directly, rather than prioritizing the well-being of Heaven as a whole. Initially, Michael displayed indignation when Azrael was chosen to serve God alongside the Virtues, despite Azrael's obvious lack of readiness to command Heaven's entire military. However, as time passed, he eventually came to regret his actions, recognizing how he had treated his brother as a mere soldier, burdened him with military responsibilities for selfish reasons, and was blinded by "foolish pride".
Appearance
Michael is an angel with pure white skin and short, neatly styled blonde hair. He has bright eyes with golden irises, and no visible nose. On his back are six angelic wings in shades of light blue and white. His chest is notably broad, indicating musculature.
He wears the standard uniform worn by soldiers of the Heavenly Host; a dark grey outfit, with a silver gorget and long, white gauntlets, a white cummerbund, and long, white, armored boots.
In intense battles, Michael often shifts into a draconic, more beastly visage. Towering at a formidable height, his transformation is adorned with a luxuriant coat of golden fur. His face, a peachy hue, bears the distinctive feature of horns crowning the apex of his head. Draped in regal attire, he dons a resplendent golden robe, intricately embellished with a starry pattern on its inner lining. Two majestic, expansive wings of pure gold emerge prominently from his robe, further emphasizing his celestial essence.
Powers and Abilities
Natural Powers
- Angelic Power: Michael, the archangel with the most profound link to God, is the strongest Virtue and likely the most powerful angelic being in existence. He easily skill issue'd Lucifer - the most powerful archangel at that time - in the past, making him look like a clown in front of his entire army. Moreover, Michael's power certainly surpass that of Azrael and an unknown number of Colossi, the once-chief archangel in Heaven and interdimensional, eldritch horrors respectively.
- Angelic Transformation: Like most angels, Michael can seamlessly assume a more Lovecraftian, traditional angel form when going through intense emotions.
- Cloudwalking: Michael can use clouds as a method of short travel, standing on them as if they were a solid object.
- Flight: Michael possesses six wings which enable him to take flight. His wings can also change sizes and colors, becoming golden and massive in her beastly form.
- Immortality: Michael is nearly as old as Heaven itself, as it is stated that he was born at Heaven's first sunset. Nothing outside of archangelic weaponry and superior cosmic power can erase him.
- Photokinesis: As an archangel, Michael has power over light and can manipulate and produce light and photons. He can summon a beam of light over himself and others, using light to instantly travel to locations in an instant.
- Supernatural Strength: During his battle against Lucifer, Michael used his incredible strength to mangle Lucifer's wings, crippling the fallen prince.
Unique Powers
- Binding: Michael can halt people in place by clenching his fist, which summons three yellow halos around the targets' bodies that bind them in place and prevent them from moving.
- Conjuration: Michael can conjure various objects of holy properties, such as angelic spears. He can also summon unbreakable, divine chains from nothing, capable of temporarily dampening the powers of even other archangels. He used both of these on Lucifer in the War in Heaven while attempting to execute him.
- Holy Electrokinesis: Like Azrael, Michael can summon and cast holy lightning.
- Power Granting: Michael can bestow power unto powers, granting them invulnerability and angelic power for as long as he deems them worthy.
- Power Reduction: Michael can reduce the powers of his targets, even higher archangels as shown when he employed divine chains against Lucifer that left him temporarily powerless.
- Size-Shifting: By transforming, Michael can alter his size.
- Shapeshifting: One of Michael's primary abilities involves taking on different forms, from a more traditional archangelic design to a far more draconic, almost demonic appearance.
Abilities
- Authoritative Power: By virtue of his status as a divine offspring and the mightiest archangel, Michael wields significant authority and garners profound perspective and adoration among the angelic order, allowing him to pass divine judgement with little, if any challenge. As the protector of Heaven, he is in charge of Heaven's courts, military, and all aspects of the angelic order. He is trusted enough that even God Himself trusts Michael as his second and announced him a member of His council. The Virtues and quite a deal of the order worship and submit to him as an offspring of God. The Virtues willingly rally behind him in the heat of battle and song, and even the Speaker of God humbly acknowledges his presence.
- Fearlessness: One of Michael's most distinctive characteristics is his unwavering courage. He readily engages in battles, effortlessly vanquishing demons and imprisoning Colossi. He also was completely unaffected by Lute's intimidation tactics and even teased her in response, making him one of the only beings who Azrael and Lute utterly failed to simply bully into submission.
- Intimidation: Michael's formidable power strikes fear into the hearts of nearly all demons, and perhaps even Lucifer himself. His intimidation tactics were perhaps best shown in the War in Heaven, where he brutalized Lucifer in front of his entire army to induce doubt in Lucifer and put the fear of God in them. Then, after banishing Lucifer, Michael, with just a single vengeful glare, instilled such terror in Lucifer's army that they chose to willingly cast themselves down from Heaven rather than face Michael's wrath. Even Azrael, defined by his arrogance, was reduced to a state of near trembling terror when Michael made his triumphant return to Heaven.
- Leadership: Michael is hailed as one of the greatest leaders in the angelic order, having led Heaven's army to victory against Lucifer and Satan during the War in Heaven, and led the Virtues in many battles against the Collosi with no causalities. He is a master strategist, and is willing to throw himself in danger to prevent any causalities of his soldiers.
- Master Combatant: Michael is one of the most formidable angelic warriors of his kingdom, proficient across all angelic combat styles. Notably, during the War in Heaven, he skill issue'd Lucifer despite the fact that Lucifer was more powerful than him. When fighting in his draconic form, Michael has a much more animalistic and bestial fighting style than his standard form, closing distances by running on all fours and using his teeth and claws while in a fight.
- Master Swordsmanship: Michael is very skilled at swordplay.
- Natural Weaponry: In his divine beast form, Michael possess razor sharp claws and teeth capable of rending the flesh of his adversaries. During his battle against Lucifer, Michael strategically embedded his claws into the fallen prince's wings, giving him a better grip and allowing him to mangle Lucifer's wings.
Relationship
Family
Seven Heavenly Virtues
Initially, Michael regarded his siblings as mere soldiers, but over the course of their cosmic adventures, their bond strengthened significantly. They developed a close-knit relationship, with Michael shedding his initial aloofness and engaging in lighthearted banter with them beyond the battlefield. Most of his siblings held Michael in high esteem, particularly Raphael and Gabriel, who affectionately referred to him as their "chief" and respected him as their boss, following his directives without hesitation. However, Sandalphon, Michael's only sister, harbored some resentment towards Michael due to his past treatment, occasionally making mocking comments that carried a subtle undertone of passive-aggression, contrasting with her playful teasing of her other siblings.
Forti
The full extent of Forti and Michael's relationship remains unknown. Michael fought alongside Forti in the battle against Lucifer and Satan. Michael ultimately succeeded Forti as the head archangel after the war.
There appears to be a notable level of respect from Michael towards Forti. This is evident in Michael's actions, such as embarking on a mission to recover Forti's body from Purgatory. Michael also expressed a solemn reverence when wielding Forti's weapon, Excalibur, following Forti's passing.
Zadkiel
In the ending of the War in Heaven, Zadkiel appealed to Michael to show mercy to Lucifer despite his grave offenses, which included inciting a war in Heaven and killing their brethren. He urged Michael to act with compassion and mercy rather than retaliating in kind. Michael heeded Zadkiel's plea and spared Lucifer, demonstrating his trust in Zadkiel and valuing his counsel even in the heat of anger and turmoil.
Archangel Miquella
Michael and Miquella share a bond of mutual respect and love, but contrast each other greatly in terms of their roles as protectors; Michael's protective nature is more exclusive and focused on humanity, while Miquella's is inclusive and extends to all beings - whether they be humans or the demonic. There is an underlying tension between them because of this.
Michael, as the elder angel and brother, takes it upon himself to teach Miquella the values of protecting humanity. Miquella, with his idealistic and inclusive vision, thinks that this is short-sighted of Michael, as humans already have angels looking out for their well-being. Miquella extends his compassion to not only humans, but also marginalized groups such as sinners and demons.
Azrael
- "You’re an obligation. A selfish obligation that has made our family miserable. An obligation that is an absolute chore to be around with. [...] We've assisted in the stunted growth and progress of humanity since that war. What have you done? Bitched and moaned when we wouldn't push you on a fucking swing? Stopping us to watch you play guitar when we had orphaned children to bring to refuge? The least you can do for the damages you’ve caused is put your lunacy to some good use and keep the Hellspawn population under control. You're done. You don't deserve this."
- — Michael to Azrael in a flashback, taking his place in serving God.
Azrael is Michael's youngest sibling, and the sibling he has perhaps the most complicated history with. During Azrael's childhood, Michael assumed a more cold, authoritarian role in his upbringing, treating Azrael more like a soldier than a sibling. Occasionally pretending that Azrael did not exist, Michael disregarded his little brother's youthful pursuits and did not bother to bond with him, unlike the other Morningstar siblings. Seeking Michael's approval and looking up to him, Azrael internalized some of Michael's unfavorable traits, notably his penchant for flirting with female angels in Heaven.
Michael was left astonished and offended when Azrael was selected to safeguard the Universe alongside the other Virtues and God. Rather than support his youngest brother and allow him to grow up alongside his more supportive siblings, Michael callously and hastily assigned Azrael as the new Divine General of Heaven under the pretense of protecting him. In reality, this act was driven by Michael's desire for the glory of serving God, ultimately isolating Azrael from his family and burdening him with militaristic responsibilities. Michael expected Azrael to put his "lunacy" to "good use" by culling Hell's population, not anticipating Azrael to go out of control with the power Michael had given him.
Michael held a strong aversion to Azrael due to the psychopathic tendencies displayed by Azrael even in childhood. These inclinations included a blatant disregard for the lives lost in the War in Heaven, as well as causing disruption and inconvenience to his siblings while they were attempting to aid the wounded and mourn their losses. This led to Michael deeming Azrael undeserving of serving God directly.
Centuries later, Michael unexpectedly returned to Heaven after millions of years of journeying across the cosmos with his siblings. His return startled Azrael, who was visibly shaken and even attempted to hide. Upon meeting Azrael and Lute, Michael offered celestial wine and congratulated Azrael and Lute on their child, making efforts to reconcile. Upon witnessing the consequences of his past actions on Azrael, Michael acknowledged his mistakes and expressed regret for being an unsupportive brother, admitting that Azrael deserved to be treated as more than just a soldier, showing that he had softened significantly since he left Heaven. However, Azrael rejected Michael's sincere apology, asserting his prowess as the most "badass" archangel. Boosted by Michael's display of vulnerability, Azrael proclaimed his superiority over all other archangels, Michael included, and left the room with Lute, leaving Michael to grapple with his regrets.
Allies
Joan of Arc
Joan is one of Michael's most devout followers. He and Joan share a very close dynamic akin to a father-daughter or mentor-mentee bond. Joan exhibits unwavering loyalty to Michael and his principles, which he takes great pride in.
When God chose Joan to save France, Michael appeared before the peasant girl to tell her of her God-given mission. Joan was driven to tears upon seeing Michael, not wanting him to leave and wanting to go with him. Michael reassured her that he would never leave, and that he would guide her. With Michael and God by her side, Joan led France through many victories and was given the title of a Saint by Michael after she ascended to Heaven.
He also taught Joan how to read, a skill that a person of her gender was denied in her times. Amidst their professional responsibilities, they also share moments of levity, occasionally indulging in playful gestures like exchanging high-fives while on duty, but she's mostly stone-faced at his attempts to be light-hearted, only relaxing when their missions are fully completed. While Michael trusts Joan's capability to defend herself, he can't shake off his innate protective instincts towards her.
Enemies
Lucifer Magne
Lucifer is Michael's fallen, former twin soul brother. Though details about Michael's pre-fall relationship with Lucifer remain scarce, it is clear that Michael strongly opposed Lucifer during the War in Heaven. Enraged by Lucifer's assignation of several of their brothers and the destruction he unleashed upon Heaven, ruthlessly inflicted physical and emotional harm upon Lucifer, maiming his wings, embarrassing him in battle in front of his followers, and nearly executing him, were it not for the intervention of God/The Speaker.
When Lucifer destroyed his own soul, he became a stranger to Michael, quite literally; the destruction of Lucifer's soul caused everyone who knew him to forget who he was as an angel.
In the present, Michael remains resolute in his determination to obliterate Lucifer should the fallen prince attempt to return to Heaven. That said, Michael struggles with conflicting inner feelings toward his fallen brother. While he resents Lucifer and refuses to forgive him for his actions, Michael still somewhat misses his fallen brother. He wishes he could redeem Lucifer, but doesn't actively try to, since he knows Lucifer is too gone. Now, Michael dedicates himself to prevent his other siblings from succumbing to evil, something he failed to prevent with Lucifer and Azrael.
There is a distinct sense of pride and satisfaction in Michael when he reflects on his victory over Lucifer, evident in his delight at seeing stained-glass depictions of him "kicking Luci's ass", and proudly pointing them out to Lute when she was unfamiliar with him, though this could have only been a play of showmanship on Michael's part.
Though Michael has a "hate the sin, not the sinner" philosophy, he struggles to separate his principles from his feelings when it comes to Lucifer. The weight of Lucifer's betrayal, the murder of their brothers, and the countless lives lost during the War in Heaven, combined with the ongoing pain he causes their Father, make it nearly impossible for Michael not to harbor deep resentment and loathing toward him.
Others
Lute
While visiting Azrael's sanctum, it became apparent that Lute held a strong aversion toward Michael, likely stemming from his past unkind treatment of Azrael. Michael offered Azrael and Lute celestial wine and congratulations on their son's birth, but Lute, displaying clear disdain, questioned his identity, which Michael seemed slightly offended by. Her animosity was evident, even extending to her wielding a spear and harshly rejecting his offer of wine (the latter of which seemed to genuinely upset Michael). Michael scolded her for her lack of respect toward an archangel, but Lute firmly affirmed her loyalty to Azrael. Surprisingly, Michael responded with a touch of amusement, appreciating her fiery personality.
Quotes
Chapter 5
- "Michael: Azrael... It's been too long, hasn't it? (Michael emerges from the shadows, a warm look on his face) Greetings... Brother. [...] What in Heaven's name are you two staring at? (Michael chuckles, looking around at the interior of Azrael's sanctum) Congrats on the kid, by the way. I would have been there for his christening, but I was... A little busy. (Michael blows a raspberry with a shrug) Had several timelines to save and what have you. (He chuckles before pulling out a canteen of wine from his robe, prompting Lute to aim her spear at him) Let's catch up with each other, shall we? Celestial wine, straight from the nectar of the stars. On me. Don't tell Gabriel. (Michael chuckles)
Lute: Who or what are you?! You have no business being in Azrael's own inner sanctum uninvited!!!
Michael: (Michael blinks at Lute) What I am is an archangel. Who and what did you think I was, soldier? Did the golden wings not reveal it? Did you just miss all those stained glass depictions of me kicking Luci's ass? ...Were you expecting maybe J-Man?" - — Michael greeting Azrael and Lute.
- "Lute: (Lute stands between Michael and the cowering Azrael) Our top Archangel is not accepting guests at this time! No one is to disturb or distract him on the eve of our most holy task. You, of all creatures, should understand the value of our mission!
Michael: (Michael raises an eyebrow at Lute) You still have no idea who you're talking to, do you? I don't recall the Heavenly Father giving you the right to boss me around. (he leans into Lute's face threateningly) Perhaps I should teach you a lesson on your place?
Lute: (she does not back down, getting into Michael's face with a look of sheer fury) I don't need YOU to tell me my place. My loyalties lie only with Archangel Azrael. I am no archangel's servant but his!
Michael: (Michael and Lute have in intense stare-off, before Michael breaks the tension by chuckling) Az, where'd you find this ray of holy light, and where can I get me one of them?! (Michael laughs and flirtatiously grabs Lute by the chin, but she immediately jerks her head from him)" - — Michael and Lute.
- "I realize now that I have not treated you as I should have. I should have been there for you, not just as a commander, but as a brother. I should have guided you with compassion, understanding, and love. In my foolish pride, I left you here, alone... You deserved more than just being a soldier, brother. You deserved to be raised with care and kindness, to know that you were valued not just for your power, but for who you are. I know I can never truly repent for what I've done to you, but.. I am truly sorry."
- — Michael to Azrael.
???
- "Michael: (he looks down at Niffty in disgust) What in the seven seals... What manner of demon spawn are you?
Niffty: Konnichiwa! My name's Niffty! (she skitters up Michael and onto his shoulder, whispering) I'm technically on the Devil's side. But don't tell Michael I said that, okay? He can be kinda scary sometimes. Hehehe...
Michael: (beat) ...I'm Michael.
Niffty: Really?! (Niffty jumps in front of Michael, dramatically putting the back of her hand to her head) Oh, woe is me! I guess that means you have to smite lil ol' me! A poor, helpless lady... (Niffty puts her arms out for Michael to kill her, lifting her eye when he just stares at her)
Michael: Are you attempting to goad me, demon?
Niffty: Oh, who am I kidding?! I'm in LOVE with you, St. Archangel Michael Morningstar! It was my Satan-given destiny to die by your gorgeous, furry hands!
Michael: (he chuckles) The princess has taken in a succubus on training wheels... Listen carefully, hellspawn. If you weren't under the protection of the half-breed princess, I would gladly smite you as I have billions of demon vermin like you.
Niffty: Ooh, really?! Tell me how you'd kill me!
Michael: Hmmm... I COULD skin you alive.
Niffty: Oh, that's awful!... (she grins) Gimme more!
Michael: (Michael puts his hand to his chin, thinking out loud) Then again, melting hellspawn with holy light is one of my favorite ways to smite you heathens...
Niffty: (resting on the ground on her chest, kicking her feet back and forth) Oh, you could smite me any day...
Michael: Or, preferably, crucifying you before drowning you in the blood of all your victims, so you taste a mere fraction of their agony... you're... getting off on this, aren't you?
Niffty: (blushing uncontrollably) No way! Hey, why'd you stop?! Keep going! Tell about how you'd cut my eye out with a spear!
Michael: (looking upwards) Father, fucking kill me.
Niffty: BATH IN MY ENTRAILS!
Michael: You are an abomination'." - — Michael meets Niffty.
- "You think you can guide sinners to Heaven with ideas like this?! You wish to destroy free will?! Let me remind that you only got to where you were because of your traitor father! YOU'RE A VESSEL FOR THE ROOT OF EVIL! If it wasn't for you, your girlfriend's soul would still be aglow! The Light of Heaven would still shine bright. NONE OF THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED! YOU DAMNED ALL OF US!!! YOU DID! Your 'noble' efforts have rightfully earned you enemies on all sides: the angelic order, the Root of Evil, demons, and even humanity. Not even God will stand by your side."
- — Michael to Charlie.
Trivia
- He is based on the archangel of the same name. In Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, Michael is one of the most important and powerful angels, the protector of the church, and chief of the heavenly armies who is attributed in the Book of Revelations as defeating and casting Lucifer and the fallen angels from Heaven during the War of Heaven.
- Michael's name means "closest to God".
- The character design for his default form was provided by ArchImp123ABCD's.
- His theme song would be "Ruthlessness" from Epic: The Musical.
- His counterpart in the Seven Deadly Sins is Lucifer.
- Michael is a "hate the sin, not the sinner" kinda guy, but he finds it difficult to not resent and loathe Lucifer considering he murdered many of their brothers and countless others through the War in Heaven and causes their Father great suffering every day for his betrayal.
- Was created 13 hours after Lucifer.
- Michael, much like Azrael, has a far more beastly, nearly demonic appearance compared to the other, more humanoid archangels. However, his transformation is meant to moreso resemble a dragon, rather than a demon.
- According to the series' authors, Michael deliberately takes on a fearsome, beastly appearance in a strategic psychological move against demons allowing him to strike terror into the hearts of the demons, forcing them to experience the same fear they often instill in others. Additionally, Michael is a shapeshifter and can take on many forms.
- Taught Joan how to read.
- His favorite childhood game was trojans.
- Has his own version of the Exterminators.
- While Michael loves humanity as God's creations, he does not really like Adam and Eve in particular, viewing them both as mistakes/disgraces.
- He is roughly the same height as Lucifer himself. Sandalphon likes to joke that Michael created his "divine beast" form to compensate for his smaller height and jokingly hails him as a "short king"...
- Michael and Sera have a fairly awkward relationship, given her relationship with Lucifer pre-fall. She's intimidated by him and some days, in private, he's prone to resenting her for not being able to save Lucifer, when in reality he's projecting - something he is bitterly aware of.
- Michael abstains from technology of any sort, not even being part of the Virtues' group chat. Not for any particular reason, he likely just sees technology as a distraction or a waste of time. That said, he's happy to take a selfie if pulled into one by his siblings or by Joan.
- A huge workaholic who prefers to keep himself busy. He never really gets tired, nor would he let himself APPEAR tired.
- That said, he's down for vacays with his fam or nights out in the Empyrean city, but always has to be invited or approached.
- Sometimes lies awake at night, staring at the ceiling, wondering how things could have been...
- It is revealed in "Extermination Day: Part 1" that Michael was the true mastermind of Extermination Day, having mused over the idea while speaking to a young Azrael. Azrael finalized the idea when he was promoted to head archangel.
- Out of all the Virtues, Michael and Gabriel would give the best hugs.
- Very rarely, when Michael wants to vent to someone, he shifts into his divine beast form and lies his head on someone's lap - like a sad dog - until they pay him attention.
- Michael, Joan, and the Virtues have their own team-up moves which they choreographed.
- Michael's relationship with Joan of Arc is a reference to the real-life Joan of Arc's claims to have been given divine instructions from various saints and angels, most notably Saint Michael, Saint Catherine, and Saint Margaret.
- Michael is constantly accompanied by two Ophanim angels, Gideon and Rufus, who serve as his vigilant bodyguards. Michael humorously perceives this as a demonstration of God's overprotectiveness, given his own formidable strength as the mightiest angel more than capable of self-defense.
