"Welcome to Cocytus, dear, the frozen lake of Hell. My very own dominion, gifted to me by Solomon himself. Feel free to partake in the splendor of my splendorous kingdom!"
Andrealphus.

Cocytus, or the Ninth Circle, is the frozen lake of Hell where Andrealphus presides. It was gifted to the Goetia prince to serve as his domain and grounds for his legions.

Description[]

Cocytus is, for the most part, a barren, snow-covered wasteland. It is abundant in jagged, ice rocks and frozen lakes which have trapped and tortured demons underneath the unbreakable ice, with oppressive winds capable of freezing demons who have no protection against them. The centre of Cocytus' life would be Andrealphus' palace, which is constructed from ice which is presumably created by the Goetia demon's own magic. Otherwise, Cocytus seem largely vacant outside of Andrealphus, his legions of ice demons and the occasional wildlife such as demonic polar bears.

Trivia[]

  • Cocytus is a river of souls from Greek mythology. In Divine Comedy, Cocytus was also depicted as the ninth and lowest circle of Hell.
  • Andrealphus states that Cocytus was gifted to him - as a child of Paimon - by King Solomon.
  • Andrealphus claims that Cocytus is so cold that Stolas himself would not be able to survive the temperatures. However, Octavia mentions that she and Stolas have both travelled Cocytus to witness the winter solstice. Additionally, Stolas has been to outer space and shown no discomfort in the atmosphere. It is unknown if Andrealphus simply lied, underestimated Stolas, or if Stolas and Octavia had some kind of magical protection from the extreme cold.
    • Octavia nearly froze to death within minutes of being in Cocytus until Andrealphus helped her unlock her ice powers. This means that Cocytus would have to be even colder than outer space, which Octavia has been to several times.
