"If there's one thing I've learned from living in Envy, it's that there is no 'sticking together'. There's only backstabbing, underhanded displays of 'kindness', and fighting to be the baddest bitch."
Hellsa Von Eldritch.

The Envy Ring, or simply Envy, is the sixth-highest ring of Hell. It made its first appearance in the Chapter 4 episode, "Dinner and a Show".

Like most of the other rings, it is not accessible to sinners, as they are confined to the Pride Ring.

Description[]

The Envy Ring boasts a predominantly oceanic expanse under a gently tinted, ethereal lavender sky. Its domain is characterized by deep purples, violets, dusky grays, and obsidian-hued seas, giving the impression of an immense, boundless ocean interspersed with numerous tropical islands and vibrant beachfront gathering spots that dot its picturesque terrain. Some of Envy's waters have magical whirlpools that send anything that gets sucked into it into dangerous, eldritch dimensions.

Beneath its oceanic depths, Envy conceals thriving underwater societies and cities inhabited by all manner of predators; aquatic, deep-sea creatures, sea monsters, and the worst predator of all, influencers. Within these developed civilizations, a diverse array of enterprises thrives, including "Jealousea," a mall owned by the illustrious Hellsa Von Eldritch, seafood restaurants like Shelly's, and nightclubs such as "The Deep End, owned by Seviathan Von Eldritch.

Beyond these urban centers, Envy's vast ocean unfolds, teeming with both marvels and perils akin to Earth's oceans. The ring encompasses numerous oceanic trenches, unveiling concealed natural wonders for those who dare to explore its depths.

Envy's cities, towns, and civilizations are bathed in the soft, enchanting glow of bioluminescent surfaces, decorations, and algae, eschewing the use of traditional lights or electricity.

Envy surpasses even the Sloth Ring as the preferred residence for the ultra-wealthy. Envy's society is dictated by class and appearances, owing to its gated and exclusive nature. Envy is by far the most status-conscious ring of Hell, its population predominantly comprised of close-minded, selfish, prideful and/or screenslaved demons and social influencers born into privilege and considerable wealth. Consequently, many of the sea-dwelling denizens of Envy exhibit elitist tendencies, displaying hostility towards those less fortunate or non-aquatic visitors to the ring.

Moreover, Envy exudes an unparalleled vanity, segregating the more grotesque sea demons to the deepest recesses of its oceanic depths, while allowing the attractive and opulent demons unrestricted access to any part of the ring they desire, a stark divide that displays the ring's obsession with appearances and social hierarchies. Envy also has its own class system, with imp hybrids and the more "grotesque" sea demons being subservient or slaves to the more appealing denizens.

Envy stands as the primary abode for a multitude of Hell's aquatic demons and marine life, including sharks, merfolk, sirens, and cephalopod demons. The treacherous waters of Envy harbor a multitude of enigmatic demonic sea monsters and creatures, their identities and characteristics often remaining a mystery to those who dare to venture into these depths.

Beyond the confines of its more civilized enclaves, Envy is an unwelcoming and perilous ring. This inhospitable reputation stems from a multitude of factors, including the presence of feral sea demons and marauding pirates who roam its treacherous seas. However, what compounds the sense of danger and hostility is the relentless enforcement of Leviathan's "dog-eat-dog" elitist worldview upon the populace, with any form of defiance met with brutal reprisals. Notably, Leviathan's spouse, wife, and their offspring similarly embody these reprehensible traits, collectively contributing to the ring's oppressive atmosphere and the perpetuation of a callous, self-serving ethos among its inhabitants.

Trivia[]

  • Envy's color is a regal shade of purple, a color known for its symbolic representation of nobility, power, and ambition—a fitting tribute to the nature and character of the ring's inhabitants.
  • To accommodate for the primarily water-based landscape, non-aquatic demons who tour Envy are often given complimentary scuba gear or a tour inside giant, transparent, demonic fish resembling the real-life Barreleye fish. Nevertheless, these visitors are strictly prohibited from venturing beyond these enclosures and can only gaze at the wonders of Envy through a window. This is so Envy's inhabitants can flaunt the wealth and beauty of their ring without the intrusion of undesirable outsiders.
  • Envy's beach and island locations were inspired by Venice Beach in California and Miami, Florida.
  • According to Hellsa, Envy is the wealthiest ring of Hell.
  • Like the Sloth Ring, Envy is a favored living place for the ultra-rich.
  • Envy is so exclusive that it has its own currency called "squid", which is a play on the slang term for pound sterling, "quid".
  • According to Fergus, there are many pirates in the Envy Ring. In an effort to address Envy's pirate predicament, Leviathan has deployed his formidable legions and even unleashed the dreaded Kraken to eliminate them. However, the determined pirates continue to endure despite these efforts. In "The Clock's Ticking", it is revealed that none other than Mammon is the cause of the Envy's pirate problem, and that he hires them to plunder the ring's endless resources for his own benefit.
  • The Envy Ring has cinemas that are often tailored to specific envious individuals, showcasing their greatest enemies at their most vulnerable moments alongside all their deepest traumas.
  • According to Blitzø, the Envy Ring has a leviathan-sized blacklist consisting of demons banned from ever entering the ring. Among them are Behemoth and Mammon.
  • The more grotesque and eldritch denizens of Envy are forced to reside within the deepest abyss of Envy's seas. The Von Eldritch family established this segregation to enable Envy to maintain its luxurious facade, shielding the ring's reputation from being tarnished by the presence of inhabitants deemed "unsightly".
  • It is considered an adversarial ring to the Gluttony Ring, due to the differences in their culture. While Gluttony is more chaotic and focused on unbridled pleasure, Envy enforces strict social hierarchies based on wealth, race, and appearance, creating an oppressive and gated environment. While Gluttony's denizens are more easygoing and focused on enjoyment rather than maintaining social hierarchies, Envy’s denizens are close-minded and hostile to outsiders or those who don’t conform to their high standards, causing a lot of tension between the two rings.
  • The Envy Ring has many Japanese iconography, in particular kappas and umibozus, in which they are popular aquatic yokais.
    • It has also many sushi restaurants.
  • According to Fin, Envy has its own football team called the "Envy Ring Krakens".
  • Many locations in the Envy Ring are homages to oceanic locations found in real-life and fiction.
    • Hell-antis is a homage to Atlantis, a fictional lost underwater kingdom.
    • The Great Bury Her Reef is a homage to the real-life Great Barrier Reef.
    • Whales is a homage to Wales.
