- "This isn't fair! This was my body! [...] Have I not learned my lesson?! No human deserves this... No one does! A life without contact is Hell to a human! Not that you horrible, cursed demons would know that! I'll never again witness the beauty of life. The love shared between husband and wife. I'll never hold my newborn baby in my arms... Because of you! [...] NO!!! I WOULD RATHER DIE THAN SPEND ETERNITY IN THIS GODFORSAKEN MINDSCAPE!!! I'LL NEVER FORGIVE YOU FOR WHAT YOU TOOK FROM ME!!! ...WHAT YOU TOOK FROM ME!!!"
- — Eve mentally tormenting Lilith.
Eve Firstman is a pivotal character in Hazbin Hotel: Journey to the Light.
She was one of the first two humans in all Creation, co-existing alongside Adam, the first man, within the Garden of Eden, where they were intended to raise humanity in Paradise.
However, Eve and Adam's nearly idyllic existence ended when she succumbed to curiosity and ate upon the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, inadvertently cursing her and her descendants with Sin, Death and Evil and royally fucking up human life for an eternity. Moreover, the effects of the Forbidden Fruit created an inner demon with Eve's memories who then took over Eve's body, leaving the first woman forever trapped and tortured within her former subconscious until she was driven to the point of insanity from lack of human interaction.
To the present, the tortured Eve continues to try to take her original body back from Lilith, and the two have been grappling for control over mind and body for essentially Lilith's entire existence.
Biography
Eve came into existence within the tranquil Garden of Eden, born of Adam's deep longing for genuine companionship, a divine, special gift from God, forged from Adam's rib, not from his head to be above him, not from his foot to be below him, but from his rib to be his equal. Adam, in his excitement, bestowed the name "Woman" upon Eve, seeing her as no different than the animals in the garden and a woman born of man. However, Asherah politely intervened, explaining Eve as another human like Adam and giving the first woman her name as she was going to be the mother for all humanity. Adam and Eve were both naked, and were not ashamed, because Adam was hung like a horse and Eve had a rack like no other, literally.
However, despite God's metaphor about Eve being his equal, Adam, in his simple-mindedness, perceived Eve as having a distinct role, tasked with gathering fruit of the Garden and offering solace whenever needed.
Over centuries spent in the Garden, Eve was submissive to Adam, always seeking to please him. Despite her designated role, they both enjoyed the same privileges, freely exploring the beauty of Eden and possessing eternal life thanks to the Tree of Life. In times of disagreement with Adam, Eve would venture beyond the Garden, forging connections with the animals Adam had named and seeking council with the Tree of Life and God. She regarded the animals, the Tree of Life, and God as her extended family.
Several decades, and perhaps even centuries, had passed since Adam had assigned Eve the task of gathering sustenance beyond the garden's confines. As she ventured deeper into the heart of Eden, a regrettable stumble sent her tumbling down a steep incline, placing her right before the mysterious Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. God had strictly forbidden both her and Adam from partaking of its fruit, as it would corrupt their souls and lead to their gradual demise. With a nervous heart, Eve reasoned that gathering food from the vicinity of the tree would not pose a risk and continued her foraging, all the while feeling the atmosphere grow increasingly unsettling. Her foraging was abruptly interrupted when the tree, much like the Tree of Life, began to speak to her. Eve found herself understandably bewildered.
The Tree kindled Eve's curiosity by revealing a tempting secret: its fruit possessed the ability to grant her the gifts of free will and independent thought, endowing her with knowledge surpassing even that of God Himself, thus freeing her from her dependence on Adam and allowing her to be of gods, knowing good and evil. Eve tried to resist the temptation, but ultimately, unable to resist, she consumed the fruit offered to her by the Tree, which responded with an eerie, knowing laughter.
Eve's joy quickly turned to torment after consuming the forbidden fruit. She dropped to her knees, wracked with agonizing screams. The fruit had awakened an inner demon within Eve, a malevolent entity that would later come to be known as Lilith. This demon emerged from the depths of Eve's consciousness, wresting control of her very being. Trapped within her own mind, Eve faced a grim destiny, slowly descending into madness as a result of her isolation and being forced to watch her life being stolen from her, unable to experience human interaction or the joys of love, or to hold her own children.
Personality
- "Eve: Asha...? Asha, please get me out of here! I'm scared! [...] It's me, Asha! I've been stuck here for years, but I've never stopped trying to find my way back to Eden! I'd never leave you! ...Why won't you listen to me?! I wanna go home!
Roo: (the vision of Asha shifts into Roo, cackling) You earned your place here! Your sin is unforgivable, luv! This is the place for worthless, useless trash like you! You think your holy lil' friends will ever forgive you?! You're MINE, shelia, and you'll never see the light of day again! HAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!" - — Eve being tormented by visions of her friends conjured by Roo.
In the beginning, Eve had a distinctly childlike innocence, but was more grounded, nurturing, and practical compared to Adam's playful, boisterous, and sometimes himbo-like demeanor. She held a deep appreciation for the beauty around them, finding joy in nature's wonders. Eve was sentimental and looked forward to building a family in Paradise with Adam. She showed a strong desire to understand her existence and her place in the world. This quest for knowledge, unfortunately, made her susceptible to manipulation, later exploited by the Root of Evil.
Eve was very loving, emotionally connected and nurturing, viewing the animals in Eden as her friends and anticipating motherhood. She showed a genuine affection and loyalty to Adam, finding herself unable to stop laughing at his antics, but also caring for him when he pretended to be hurt for the sake of getting her attention. Still, despite her practicality, she engaged in playful banter with Adam, showing that she could be fun-loving and light-hearted.
However, after she was deceived by Roo into disobeying God and eating the forbidden fruit, Eve's vessel was possessed by an inner demon who mirrored a defiant and strong-willed Eve at the cost of her physical and emotional humanity.
Imprisoned within the depths of her subconscious, Eve was forced to witness her own life being stolen from her. Lilith, none the wiser, unknowingly stripped away every dream Eve held dear—denying her the joys of motherhood and the embrace of love. While Eve suffered in Lilith's subconscious, Roo would create visions of Eve's past friends, such as Asherah, searching and calling out for her, giving Eve hope that she could communicate with them, only for them to ignore her pleas. In the desolate void of Lilith's mind, these apparitions of her friends eventually metamorphosed into Roo, who ruthlessly tormented and mocked the first woman. The relentless psychological anguish, exacerbated by Eve's profound isolation, ultimately drove her to the brink of insanity.
Despite being utterly broken from her imprisonment, Eve still shows signs of defiance; even in Roo's presence, she is passionate and unafraid to show her anger and determination to seek justice, revenge, and redemption. She openly expresses her hatred and desire to destroy Lilith and Roo for causing her so much pain. Moreover, despite how grim and dire her situation is, Eve also rarely shows signs of being jaded and sarcastic, as shown when she sarcastically inquired what Roo's endgame was when she already has a "decent gig" tormenting Eve and driving her insane, possessing a biting wit amidst her suffering, likely as a coping mechanism.

Adam
- "Oh, come on... Of course, I still remember you. I still know who you are... You idiot. A stupid idiot, but my stupid idiot. You think I can just forget someone like that? You wish."
- — Eve to Adam.
Adam was Eve's husband. In the idyllic setting of Eden, Eve and Adam shared a profound companionship, coexisting harmoniously with the Edenic fauna. Eve balanced Adam's spontaneity with her own steady presence.
In their best moments, Eve and Adam had a very loving relationship; they were goofs and sillies who loved Paradise and nature together. They teased each other lovingly and shared moments of laughter and joy, with Eve being attracted to Adam's adventurous personality and him making her laugh. They had a strong bond of mutual admiration and love, looking forward to their future together and the family they envision building in Paradise.
However, Adam, influenced by his naivety, viewed Eve through a lens of perceived subservience. This perception stemmed from the notion that she was created to be his companion and prevent loneliness. Though the two did love each other, Adam frequently assigned Eve mundane chores, like foraging for sustenance, and seemed completely clueless to her inner conflict and woes. Unfortunately, this dynamic left Eve with the impression that Eden was not as much a paradise for her as it was for Adam, and partially was the reason that led to her consuming the Forbidden Fruit.
Enemies
Lilith
Lilith was an inner demon that emerged when Eve partook in the Forbidden Fruit, leading to her own entrapment within her subconscious. Lilith, now in control, unwittingly deprived Eve of her life, fostering resentment within her. Eve harbors a profound disdain for Lilith, holding her responsible for the theft of freedom, motherhood, and existence. Relentlessly, Eve strives to reclaim her vessel from Lilith. This animosity intensified when Lilith, upon discovering Eve's existence within her subconscious, adamantly refused to relinquish control, telling Eve that she brought her misery upon herself when she defied God.

- "Adam: (he gasps, pointing to Eve) The First Woman has birthing hips!!!
Eve: Huh??? (she looks at her waist and blushes, smiling) Oh, look at that. (she giggles) Yeah, I do...
Adam: (he slicks his hair back, in plain sight of Eve, and struts up to her, going to lean his elbow on a "tree", but he is so distracted by Eve's beauty that he doesn't notice there is nothing there) Y'know, Evie, E-girl... (suddenly, he sees that he is leaning on nothing and plummets to the floor)
Eve: Oh, goodness! (she kneels beside him) Adam, are you alright?!
Adam: (he is writhing on the ground dramatically) Ow, ow, owwww! I think I'm dying... Coulda sworn there was a tree there...
'Eve: (she rolls her eyes, but can't help but giggle at him) You're not dying, silly. You're just being a big baby. (she lowers her hand to to help up Adam)
Adam: Well, I was born two weeks ago... (when he takes her hand, he intentionally pulls her down to him; Eve lands on top of Adam and they both roll down a nearby, plushy hill, laughing and screaming uncontrollably; after they reach the end of the hill) BAD-ASS!!! (he fist-pumps) EVE! EVE! LET'S DO THAT AGAIN!
Eve: (brushing her hair from her face, laughing) No, no, no! Let's never do that again! (she playfully shoves Adam off before seeing the sunset once her hair is out of her eyes) ...Oh, it's gorgeous, Adam...
Adam: (he kicks back while laying in the grass) That sun's pretty hot, though... Not as hot as you!
Eve: (she covers her blushing cheeks) Adaaaam!
Adam: Eh? Eh? That was good, wasn't it? I bet you our ancestors are gonna be quoting that gem for generations. I'm 'bumbuming' that shit! Two bumbums every time someone says that!
Eve: (she giggles) Adam, I don't think our children are going to be wooing each other anytime soon.
Adam: (he shakes his head with a smirk) Nope. ...Not unless one of us eats from that gnarly tree, and death comes crashin' the whole Paradise party, forcing our descendants to repopulate with each other, and in a million years they all just kinda have to ignore the fact that they're all related.... HA! (smiling wide) But that's, like, NEVER happenin', right?! (Adam laughs heartily and Eve covers her mouth, giggling; Adam sighs) Damn... Of all the hotties God and Ashy coulda whipped out from my ribs, I'm glad it was you, my rad lil' super-stacked E-girl. I'd be lost without ya. (as Adam says this, Eve gives him a look of true love, glowing with pride) We're gonna make the most badass fam, baby. I'm already thinkin' of the names. (he begins counting on his fingers) I'll name the first Adam Jr. Then the second.... Adam Jr. Jr. And the third... Cain. (he snaps his fingers; to himself) Yeah, that's fuckin' dope. I really dig that... Way to go, Adam.
Eve: (she lays beside him, wrapping an arm around him) ...I'm glad I was gifted to be created with you... I can't imagine how lonely I'd feel if I was here... alone. Besides, you're really fun to be around. I... I really like you, Adam.... One day, we're gonna be in this exact spot, watching all of our children enjoy Paradise. (he eyes sparkle with tears of joy) Oh, it's going to be perfect!" - — Adam and Eve shortly after Eve's creation.
- "The Root of Evil: G'day mate...
Eve: (she looks around) H- Hello...?
The Root of Evil: Over 'ere, mate!
Eve: (she looks upon the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil and drops her basket in shock) My... Huh... That's queer. I didn't think trees could talk.
The Root of Evil: Maybe the trees in yer sanctuary, bein' bound to Eden and all. But me, I'm a special tree...
Eve: That... That much is clear. (she picks up her basket full of fruit) I should really go. Adam's waiting for me...
The Root of Evil: Leavin' so soon, mate? We were just gettin' to know each otha. You don't wanna bust me balls, do ya? (Roo grows fresh fruit from her branches) That basket of yers is lookin' a lil' on the light. How boutcha 'ave these apples to go? You'll neva find fresher eats in all of Eden, mate!
Eve: 'Apples'? So, that's what they're called! Adam calls them-
The Root of Evil: 'Bumbums'? 'Cuz that's the sound they make when they fall and tumble to the ground. (cackles) What a daft c***, he is.
Eve: Pardon me, but... How do you know so much about me and Adam? About Eden...?
The Root of Evil: Y'see, I know things, mate. I know that you were put here to be slave ta Adam, and I know that you were told to never eat upon me branches. You spent years wonderin' where I was, not even noticin' me 'til I willed it to be so, mate.
Eve: What do you mean, slave to Adam...? I... I am his wife and we will have children. What's so wrong with that? We both were intended for each other! Just please help me to understand...
The Root of Evil: Eat from my branches and you'll understand everything, shelia.
Eve: (she ponders it) ...I should be going...
The Root of Evil: Don't crack the whip just now, mate! You almost forgot yer food! (she presents fruit to Eve) You don't wanna go back to Adam empty-handed, do ya?
Eve: We were forbidden to eat upon your branches. You said as much...
The Root of Evil: But my fruit is the most bonzer in all of fuckin' Eden, mate! It'll have ya both feelin' all choc a bloc! But most of all, mate... It'll make ya smart and free ya from Adam's strings. Have ya eva entertained the idea that there's more ta life than slavin' away in a boring as bat shit garden? If you eat me fruit, you'll have all the knowledge of creation! You can go whereva you want! C'mon! Chickeeeeen! (makes chicken noises)
Eve: I- I don't know...
The Root of Evil: No backsies, mate! No one's forcin' ya. I don't give two fuckin' hairy bollox what you choose. Rack off and be a slave to Adam, or eat like a queen and become as much. Clock's tickin', mate..." - — The Root of Evil tempts Eve into eating the Forbidden Fruit.
- "Eve: (while wandering in Lilith's mind, she finds a body of water and begins hallucinating, seeing visions of her playing with her hypothetical children in the reflection) The- Those are my children. (she kneels next to the body of water) My children. There we are... (she touches the water, only for the visions to disappear; realizing its falsity, she hangs her head and begins crying)
Roo: Ironic, isn't it? (she sprouts behind Eve as the Root of Evil, only for one of her roots to break off and form into her default form while the Root of Evil returns to being the Tree of Knowledge) The Mother of Humanity... with no children of her own.
Eve: (she lunges out) DON'T YOU DARE LAUGH AT ME, DEMON! I WOULD HAVE HAD A CHANCE TO HAVE KIDS IF YOU AND LILITH DIDN'T STEAL MY LIFE FROM ME! I DIDN'T ASK FOR ANY OF THIS!
Roo: Ah, but you did. (she chuckles, conjuring a glass in her hand; she pulls on her tree form's vine like a pump as sap -or liquefied sin - fills the glass) You did ask for this. You ate that fruit for a reason, luv. (Roo drinks the entire glass before teleporting beside Eve, leaning her elbow on the first woman's shoulder and begins twirling Eve's hair with her finger; they watch together as the water's reflection shows Lilith raising Eve's children) All those memories lost... But hey! Look on the bright side. At least you neva have to change a diaper. HAHAHAHA!!!
Eve: (fuming) YOU ARE A GODDAMNED MONSTER, YOU KNOW THAT?! I DESPISE YOU WITH EVERY FIBER OF MY BEING! I'LL DESTROY YOU ONE DAY, JUST YOU WAIT!
Roo: (she visibly becomes stronger from Eve's anger) Ah... that hit the spot. (she playfully boops Eve's nose) You're cute when you're mad, buttercup.
Eve: (she seethes, her eyes narrowing with an intense glare) You and Lilith don't realize what pain you have both inflicted upon me. You've both took my husband, my dreams, my life... EVERYTHING! And you're just laughing at my torment?
Roo: (she waves her hand) It's no biggie, right? We all make mistakes, right? I mean, you were curious... (her arm extends as a root and touches Eve's chin, forcing the first woman to look at her)
Eve: (she jerks away) DON'T TOUCH ME!
Roo: (Roo's voice becomes mockingly sweet as she chuckles and grins slyly) It's so cute. Watching you struggle. Admit it, luv. We've been through this and I've seen inside that noggin of yours. You know this is where you belong. You love being tormented. You love crying and tearing your hair out. You love being tormented because you hate yourself and know in your heart of hearts that you deserve this.
Eve: (she snaps) YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M GOING THROUGH!!! I HATE LIFE, BUT ONLY BECAUSE OF YOU AND THAT HAG, LILITH!!! YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT'S LIKE TO HAVE HOPES, LOVE AND DREAMS, AND THEN HAVE ALL OF THAT TAKEN FROM YOU!!! TAKEN FOREVER!!!! WHAT DOES ANY OF THAT MEAN TO YOU?!
Roo: (her roots restrain Eve, the thorns piercing her body; Roo gets in Eve's face as she trembles with fear) You were the one who took the fucking fruit, you dumb c***. No one forced you. (She chuckles, her fangs extending) I just prey on your guilt... (she caresses Eve's face before slowly clawing her cheek as she whimpers in pain) ...and I love it. Do you really think Ashy and the others will ever forgive you?
Eve: ...I... I don't think they'd forgive me, no. But I deserve a chance to redeem myself.
Roo: (she grins, blood flowing from her mouth) I'll give you a chance. My little secret... But only if you become my vessel. I'll help you get revenge on Lilith. All you would have to do is find your way back to Earth. Then I'll be outta your hair...
Eve: (Eve stares at Roo with an intense expression) So... You do have an endgame. But why do you want to go back to Earth? (sarcastically) You clearly have a decent gig going here, driving me insane day in and day out...
Roo: (she nods, checking her nails) Don't blow smoke up yer ass, mate. You are just one woman. (Roo magically conjures a mirror image depicting her roots tearing through Earth) Now, crossing into Earth and breaking all their little mortal minds until they see through my eyes? (Roo snickers) Now that's a bonzer fuckin' gig, mate.
Eve: ...You're truly evil. Even I cared for the people of Eden. I thought... I thought I was doing right by mankind when I ate that fruit... You're just a selfish, rotten... THING who doesn't care how much you hurt others as long as it brings you joy.
Roo: Well, that's the difference isn't it, mate? You see, I don't give two fucks. That's what makes me the purest kind of evil. Why I was cast out and exiled when the Light gave Creation form. (she chuckles, gripping the brim of her fedora for a moment) And- wait- Did you think you did right by eating that apple? (she laughs) You stupid bitch. You did right by spreading my influence to Earth. Damning all of humanity. You doomed all children to death and destruction. You doomed everything all because you were bored! (Roo cackles loudly, grabbing Eve's chin) You are the worst of them all. (she flamboyantly wraps her arm around Eve as billions of corpses appear around them; Eve trembles in fear, covering his eyes as Roo grins) Eve, the Mother of Sin and Death! You should be proud of yourself. (she pats Eve on the back before vanishing into black smoke, cackling maniacally)" - — Roo and Eve.
