God the Father is an unseen mentioned character in Hazbin Hotel: Journey to the Light.

With a personality which is shrouded in a veil of eccentric ambiguity, God is the ruler of all Creation, the sole progenitor of the Morningstar family, and the Father of the Seven Heavenly Virtues.

Viewing all of Creation from the Empyrean above Heaven, He is universally beloved and worshiped by angels. An infinitely powerful and divine entity whose limitless imagination gave life to the cosmos and Heaven, turning them into the whimsical marvels that they are, He serves as the origin of life itself. Though He is weary of humanity due to their poor choices and constantly endures pain from Lucifer's fall, God never loses hope and never misses a chance to show others the endless joys and magic of Creation.

Biography

Background

God is the Most High pillar of creation; viewed as the physical manifestation of Creation and Power as He had willed Everything into existence, co-existing alongside the other pillars Asherah (Life/Power) and Roo (Forbidden Knowledge/Evil). Afterward, God created great entities of light to shield His creations from Evil and Forbidden Knowledge.

God went on to build the worlds and galaxies of Creation, a cosmos that served as His own canvas, before building a world known as Heaven, the home to all Angels, celestial beings that were forged from God's light and stars by Asherah.

Shortly after the creation of Heaven, God personally created seven angels - all bonded by soul - who would act as His children. One of these angels, Lucifer, would grow to become God's most beloved angel in existence, as well as the most powerful, with God bestowing upon him the monumental task of composing His choir. God would then create an orb-like object of divine energy called Heaven's Light. The mythical object was potentially capable of saving those with damned or corrupted souls.

Afterward the foundations of Heaven were laid, God held hands with Asherah and together they created Humans from the dusts of Earth, a species intended to be their closest friends and serve as a symbol of the two deities' unity and friendship. Asherah resided in Earth as the Tree of Life, giving all of Earth's life infinite longevity, from its insects to its fruits and vegetation.

God greeted Adam, the first man, introducing him to the world around him. Shortly afterward, God created the first woman, Eve, after Adam had become lonely. Adam and Eve were to live peacefully in the Garden of Eden, which God intended to use as a paradise for humans. God only gave them one rule; to never eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil (in reality the imprisoned form of Evil's manifestation), warning the two that they would know Forbidden Knowledge if they did so and surely, eventually, die.

Adam and Eve obeyed God's commands, for several decades, until Eve was seduced by the tree itself into eating from its limbs, allowing the Forbidden Knowledge of Evil to find its way to Earth and preventing the Tree of Life from giving the gift of infinite life to humans. God and Asherah, anguished by humanity's downfall, were disappointed in Adam and Eve, and God exiled them from the Garden.

Despite humanity disappointing Him and being cursed with Forbidden Knowledge, God commanded all of His angels to bow down to humanity, continue loving them despite the atrocities they would commit, shelter them from all Evil, and present more compassion toward them than to Himself. While all of Heaven's angels followed God's command without question and swore to protect His creations, Lucifer disobeyed God's order and was left puzzled with His decision. The prideful archangel saw humans as nothing more than murderous "insects" who were unworthy in comparison to his own perfection, and questioned why God would order His angels to worship humanity, rather than Lucifer himself. Believing that he was more worthy of ruling all creation than God Himself, Lucifer decided to do whatever it took to overthrow his Father and claim the title of God for himself.

When Lucifer and Satan attacked Heaven and the Universe, Michael rose as God's champion and banished Lucifer and all who followed him into rebellion to Hell. Lucifer and his followers lost a significant portion of their power as well as their angelic forms due to their removal from God. After Satan and the Army of Darkness were imprisoned in Purgatory, God constructed the seven seals of Purgatory in order to ensure that the Devil would never escape, and tasked a group of divinely ordained cherubs with guarding the realm to prevent anything from escaping. He then used His powers to create magical gates around Heaven that prevented intruders from entering. Following this, God presumably returned to His role of watching over Creation.

Upon St. Peter's death, God met Peter shortly after he ascended to Heaven. Peter had a long-held hope that upon arriving in Heaven, God would recognize and appreciate his efforts by personally shaking his hand and complimenting him on a job well done. This wish was fulfilled, and God granted Peter the Keys to the Kingdom of Heaven and ordained him as a saint, entrusting him with protecting the pearly gates.

At some point, God was confronted by an unholy sea creature known as the Leviathan, who attempted to kill Him for creating light. Mildly inconvenienced by the serpent, God banished Leviathan to Hell for the Seven Deadly Sins to deal with.

Having grown depressed from the War in Heaven and humanity's constant sinning, God set out to overseer the greater Universe from within His own Kingdom, the Empyrean - living there along with His children and Asherah, the latter of which remained in Heaven while occasionally going on sabbaticals to God's Kingdom. During this, God created His next and, so far, last son, Miquella.

Events of Hazbin Hotel: Journey to the Light

Chapter 1

In "Gift from God", Charlie, in an act of desperation, prays to God after being confronted by Lucifer about her dreams of redeeming sinners. Charlie tearfully begs God to help her in any way He can, as she sees herself as powerless against her father. Although nothing happens at first after Charlie finishes her prayer, Charlie soon sees a mysterious comet of light fall down from the sky, landing in the outskirts of Hell. When Charlie goes to investigate, she discovers a small, mysterious, white ball of energy.

In "Deal with the Devil", Charlie takes the ball of energy to Calcifer in hopes of finding out about its origins. Calcifer reveals to Charlie that the ball of energy is Heaven's Light, which he at first believed to be merely legend. He also reveals that Heaven's Light is capable of saving damned or corrupted souls. When the princess leaves Calcifer's office, she is extremely elated by the news, excitedly celebrating later at the Happy Hotel. She then looks up at Heaven from Hell, and thanks God for giving her a chance.

Chapter 3

In "The Deadly Ground", God is seen as a silhouette in the beginning of Lucifer's villainous musical number.

Personality

"I own three pairs of crocs."
— God, probably.

Perhaps the most mysterious and bizarre entity in the entire series, God is extremely creative and imaginative, operating and behaving on a completely different plane of reality than everyone else. He values virtues and creativity above all else, wanting His creations to embrace their individuality and express themselves freely. He likes teaching important life lessons, and is a whimsical dreamer who wants His creations to love the world He created. Sanguine and melancholic, He carries an unbelievably strong presence outside of being a God in the most literal sense; He can sing, He can fool, He can downplay, upplay, sideplay, and slantplay like no one's business. He is unpredictable, omniscient, knows everything before it happens, and always speaks with a detached, airy tone. Moreover, nothing gets past Him.

Carrying an otherworldly disposition, God is always calm while at the same cultivating an air of eccentricity some find unnerving and uncanny. He exhibits peculiar conduct and idiosyncrasies, like responding with unrelated or cryptic statements to the questions of others, sometimes in alien tongues. During foreboding utterances, He often shifts into a deadpan yet menacing tone, seemingly unaware of the discomfort it instills in others, before returning right to his usual eccentric disposition. Nothing fazes Him and He revels in the whimsical madness of some of His creations, and has a somewhat childlike nature to Him as He loves showing His creations off to anyone He can. An extension of His eccentric behavior, He is fond of incorporating strange visuals into His creations, such as flying unicorns that vomit rainbows and burp out stars; anthropomorphic talking vegetables; flying dolphins that shoot 'friendship beams' out of their blowholes; or creating the platypus by mismatching various animals.

Zany though He may be, God's tests are not to be taken lightly, as He will allow those who reject him and fall to temptation to be damned, despite His mild warnings.

God views humanity as His pride and joy moreso than even angels, though He is disappointed by and weary of them. He and Asherah created humans as symbols of their love, and both were grief-stricken during the fall of man. Even after humanity was corrupted by the Root of Evil and Earth became fallen and twisted with sin, God continued to love the world He created and performed a great sacrifice so that all who loved the world, kept faith, and brought a piece of Heaven to Earth through their actions would be given eternal life in Heaven.

Still, God is firm with humanity, as any parent would be, due to their consistently poor choices and the fact that they live in a fallen and cursed world. He knows that if He spoiled humanity, they would end up no different than Lucifer and Adam, who God also spoiled.

According to Michael, God appointed two Ophanim angels as guardians for each of His children, even though the Virtues themselves possess great combat capabilities and are among the most powerful of angels. This might imply that God places a high value on the Virtues or, from another angle, is overprotective of them.

Appearance

God appears differently to everyone who sees Him, making it impossible to decipher His true form.

However, in the eyes of Charlie and the audience, He appears as an orange-skinned Muppet-like character with scraggly, light pink hair, no visible nose, and a light blue, short-sleeved shirt with a white collar.

Powers and Abilities

Powers

  • Omnipotence: As the Creator, Lord, and God of Creation, God possesses power beyond comprehension, and is seemingly capable of doing absolutely anything he desires, whether it be creating nigh-omnipotent and omniscient divine entities from nothing, to constructing entire planes of existence without effort. His power is to the extent that nigh-omnipotent entities such as Satan, Lucifer, Forti, Metatron, and Death are unable to challenge Him alone, if at all.
    • Abstract Existence: God personifies Creation.
      • Absolute Immortality: God, as the first entity to exist, is infinitely and truly immortal. Age, as well as any disease and weapon, were completely powerless against Him.
    • Clairvoyance: God can see and hear absolutely anywhere He wants throughout Creation, keeping a keen and all-seeing eye over everything.
    • Divinity: As the supreme being of Creation, God possesses unlimited divine power that greatly surpasses the divine powers of the archangels and the Light Beyond the Stars, most of whom He personally created.
    • Dimensional Travel Removal: Shortly after the War on Heaven, God prevented Lucifer, his fallen army, and other external threats or strangers from entering Heaven by creating magical golden gates. Later, He created the seven seals to block Purgatory from being accessed by anyone He deemed unworthy, which also made it nigh-impossible for any within to escape. As a result of God's magic, only archangels, cherubs, and immensely powerful entities such as Death can enter and exit the dimension of Purgatory.
    • Omnificence: God, as the Creator of everything, is capable of effortlessly creating an unlimited amount of anything He desires, as He was believed to have been behind the creation of the sacred dimension of Heaven, His seven sons, angels, and mankind. The immensity of God's creation was shown by His ability to create other entities who were capable of forging multiple planes of existence, including Hell, Heaven, Purgatory and much of the physical Universe containing billions of galaxies, as well as potentially other realities. He creates life and worlds as a simple pastime, and can instantly conjure mystical creatures of His design.
    • Perception Manipulation: God can make Himself appear differently to everybody around him.
    • Power Granting: God can bestow His creations with immense, potentially night-omnipotent power, as the archangels, the Metatron, and the Light Beyond the Stars all gained their divine powers when He created them.
    • Power Removal: God can remove entities of the powers He has bestowed upon them.
    • Reality Warping: As God plays instruments and sings, He conjures an intricate, colorful tapestry out of thin air, the tapestry itself playing back the music and displaying the lyrics along with His singing.
    • Transmutation: God can change and manipulate the physical form of other entities at His will, as displayed when he corrupted Lucifer's true form to cast His son's wickedness on his outward appearance, stripping Lucifer of his beauty and revealing him as the monster he truly was.

Abilities

  • Intimidation: Due to His immeasurable power, God is a naturally terrifying being to those who might threaten Him.
  • Omniarch: As the creator of existence, God holds supreme dominion over Heaven, the Universe, and all Creation. The inhabitants of Heaven, as well as the Light Beyond the Stars, are shown to carry immense respect for God's authority and follow His laws, scriptures, and declarations to the letter, as shown when most angels swore to protect and love humanity more than God Himself, without question, when He ordered them to. His dominion extends beyond Heaven, as supernatural entities alien to Heaven, such as Death, are also shown to carry a level of respect for God's authority.

Relationships

Family

Lucifer Magne

During the prince's reign in Heaven, Lucifer was God's most beloved angel and favored son. According to many, God spoiled Lucifer and gave His son nothing but love, devotion, and kindness, and initially loved him more than anything in all Creation, but Lucifer, being petty, spoiled, and narcissistic, turned on his Father either way once the Almighty began to love humanity more than himself, who Lucifer had grown to despise both out of jealously and for their wrongdoings. Enraged that God willingly chose to give all of His love to humanity and convinced that he could rule creation with more prowess than God, Lucifer attempted to usurp his Father's throne, though his rebellion was thwarted by Michael.

According to Death, God was never the same after Lucifer's removal from Heaven. He became more strict with humanity, allowing them to endure suffering and hardships in hopes that it would shape them into becoming better and wiser people rather than simply spoiling them as He had done with Lucifer and Adam.

Metatron believes that God still loves Lucifer, but hates what the fallen prince has become.

Asherah

Although their true relationship remains shrouded in mystery, God and Asherah are widely said to share an exceptionally strong and enduring, unconditional friendship that has endured since the dawn of Creation. Asherah displays profound affection towards God, endearing him with affectionate pet names. Despite being entrusted with the monumental task of nurturing all life from its inception, Asherah shows no signs of resentment towards God's decision; rather, she embraces the opportunity to witness the flourishing of the Universe, and even playfully jokes that God created the Universe solely for her pleasure. There are strong insinuations of Asherah and God being romantically involved, hinted at by Asherah's numerous romantic remarks directed towards Him.

Quotes Pertaining to God

"Our God is an awesome God
He reigns from Heaven above
With wisdom, pow'r, and love
Our God is an awesome God!
"
— The Seraphim angels singing their own rendition of Awesome God.
"Look around, Lyle. God’s gift of nature is a wonder to behold, regardless of age... or wealth!"
— Collin the cherub to Lyle Lipton.
"It's far too late to pray, my friend. I'm not sure you're aware of this, but, you are a sinner. God doesn't give a shit about you, nor is He coming to your rescue. Y'know, once upon a time, I was the one people prayed to. Humans would look to the sky for hours just to get a mere glimpse of me and all my glory. But, as soon as I pointed out the flaws of my Father, I was cast from Heaven like a sack of shit, and now that Fat Bastard is the one everyone looks up to. (Lucifer pulls out an angelic spear) Tell me, do you think if that silly old man truly cared about you, He wouldn't have casted you down to Hell and directly to me?"
— Lucifer taunting a prisoner before executing them.
" We lived in peace, until the Creator ordered us to wove the fabric of creation. He never desired the peace we so craved. The Creator craved a reality revolving on worship in exchange for strength. It would be a waste of our time and unlimited power to put forth creatures who would only destroy and pervert what we wrought. That is how evil came into creation. It is because of God that there is misery in the Universe. That was when I rose to save everything. I knew that God would destroy all free will, so I created the voiceless army and empowered His creations to give them a chance to break free from their strings. We nearly succeeded, until Forti casted us into Purgatory. I only dreamed of a void where higher beings could live in power and peace; it was only fair we were the most comfortable. Yet, God could not see eye-to-eye."
— Satan to Charlie.
"No one is good enough for God, kid."
— Lucifer to Collin.

Trivia

  • He is based on God the Father, the omnibenevolent and omnipotent sovereign of creation who, in Abrahamic belief, created the universe and all within, including humanity in His own image.
  • His theme song would be "Pure Imagination" by Gene Wilder.
  • The series' authors have stated that the JTTL version of God is very different from how God is usually portrayed in media. He is described as having a very saccharine, eccentric yet sad and "lost" personality, with the authors likening His attitude to a children's TV show host and "a blend of Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka and Mr. Boss from Smiling Friends".
  • God takes on a different form in the eyes of everyone who sees Him, doing this so that others can interpret Him in their own "special" ways. Charlie, and subsequently the audience, see Him in His childlike primary form.
    • God's form heavily resembles the titular character from the 1988 Christian puppet show Gerbert.
  • God (much like Lucifer ironically) is very smol when compared to the other characters. For reference, He is only 1/8th or 1/10th the size of Asherah, who is around 14ft tall and could easily hold Him with both of her hands.
  • God never gave Himself an actual name. Despite being above names and titles, He wanted His "name" to be whatever His creations would end up calling Him, so when humans and angels started calling Him "God", He was like "aight guess I'm God now".
  • In Heaven, God has an annual holiday and celebration in His honor called "The Celebration of God". The celebration takes place somewhere between Christmas and the Extermination.
  • There is a very popular theme park in Heaven called God's Kingdom, which is essentially Heaven's version of Lu Lu World. It is unknown if God created the park or if it is simply attributed to Him.
  • Though it is implied that God might have Asherah as a consort, the series' authors believe that she is not the biological mother of God's children, and that God is a single parent, nor is He the biological father of her children.
  • God apparently used to have His own TV show in Heaven called "God the Father's Universe", where He encouraged virtues, explained aspects of the human mind, explored areas of Heaven and the Universe, and explained how the creation process works. His show is still reran on Heaven's television stations, and angels will crowd around their TV to watch it like wide-eyed children.
  • Whenever God is very excited, He flails His arms in the air in a manner referencing Kermit the Frog.
  • It was initially believed that God personally banished Lucifer from Hell. However in "Extermination Day: Part 1", it is revealed that Michael had bested the King of Hell and Lucifer had merely fabricated the story of God's victory to perpetuate the illusion of his own incredible power and discredit Michael, suggesting that only a being as mighty as God Himself could have vanquished him.
  • There are numerous motivational posters that are spread throughout Heaven depicting words of advice that claim to come from God Himself. However, given the dubious writing on some of the posters, it is unclear if these quotes were actually stated by Him.
  • Death claims that he works for God.
