Jeanne d'Arc, best known as St. Joan of Arc, is an upcoming character in Hazbin Hotel: Journey to the Light.

She is the young, French saint of the Heavenly Host and one of Michael's closest subordinates, serving as his apprentice and daughter figure.

In life, God chose her to save France from the English invaders, while Michael appeared before her and guided her. She currently resides in the Empyrean as Michael's second.

Personality[]

Joan is complex, devout, tomboy-ish, and zealous, always carrying herself with a stubborn sense of pride and hardly any sense of fear. With an "honor before reason" mindset, she has a strong sense of justice and will immediately protect the innocent even if it is unwise to do so. She also has a very rebellious streak, even towards her superiors, and tend to let her emotions dictate her actions. Despite tending to come off as a fiery loudmouth, she has a certain conviction and confidence that inspires and rallies people.

She is extremely loyal to Heaven and its leadership - Michael in particular. Joan is also quite devout and will go out of her way to confront and/or outright harm anything blasphemous. Because of her beliefs, she can be surprisingly reluctant to pick up a sword and shed blood, preferring to lead armies and only directly fighting as a last resort. In intense moments, she can be borderline erratic, unhinged, stubborn, and superstitious.

In short, she's badass and a little loco (she's so real for that...).

Appearance[]

Joan is a young woman with isabelline skin, yellow irises, and dark hair that is styled in a sharp, short, asymmetrical bob.

She wears the standard battle uniform of Heaven's military, consisting of a gray mini-dress fastened with a white cumberbund, paired with black leggings. She wears silver, wrist-length gauntlets with silver, thigh-length armor on her legs.

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Flight: Joan possesses a set of wings to fly with.

Abilities[]

  • Bilingualism: Joan can speak French and English very fluently.
  • Master Combatant: As a saint of the Heavenly Host, Joan would have to be a master combatant. She can triumph over even those who have more experience than herself.
  • Weapon Proficiency: Joan is skilled in using all manner of angelic weapons, such as swords and spears.

Relationships[]

Allies[]

Archangel Michael[]

Joan and Michael have a very close friendship and relationship reminiscent of a daughter-father, solider-commander, or protege-mentor bond. Joan is a devout follower of the head archangel, a loyalty shaped by all of his significant impact on her life. When God chose Joan to save France, Michael appeared before the peasant girl to tell her of her God-given mission. Joan was driving to tears upon seeing Michael, not wanting him to leave and wanting to go with him. Michael reassured her that he would never leave, and that he would guide her.

Upon Joan's death, Michael took her under his wing, ordained her as a saint, and she became his second.

Their relationship clearly extends beyond mere mentorship, as Michael took it upon himself to teach Joan how to read, as well as giving her proper military training—skills denied to many of her gender in her era. Through teaching her the art of swordplay and instilling confidence in her instincts, Michael empowered Joan, physically and spiritually. Whenever Joan does something awesome, Michael tries to get her to high-five him, but she's mostly stone-faced at his attempts to be light-hearted, only relaxing when their missions are fully completed. They're silly, goofy glorbos together!

Michael is a bit of a mystery even to Joan. She often calls him her "overworked dad", and occasionally has worries about his workload, especially since Michael never lets himself appear tired. She basically wants to do his work for him and be his hand of virtue, but, unfortunately for her, Michael is a workaholic.

Azuriel[]

Joan and Azuriel are said to be good friends, often kickin' in together when Azuriel stays nights at the Empyrean. He admires and looks up to Joan, and she, as Michael's apprentice and a seasoned warrior, offers him advice, share stories of her battles, and encourages him to stay true to his responsibilities.

Trivia[]

  • She is based on Jeanne D'Arc, a real-life, French peasant girl who, believing that she was acting under divine guidance, led the French army in a momentous victory at Orléans in 1429.
    • Her name means "God is gracious" in Hebrew.
  • Joan's relationship with Michael is a reference to the real-life Joan of Arc's claims to have been given divine instructions from various saints and angels, most notably Michael, Saint Catherine, and Saint Margaret.
  • She is introverted and can be surprisingly shy when meeting new people.
  • In life, Joan was illiterate and also had no formal military combat training. After her death, she was taught angelic combat as well as how to read by Michael.
  • When not on duty, she often wears men's clothing for casual attire.
  • Speaks with a thick French accent.
  • She HATES it when people believe that Michael is capable of falling. Because of Lucifer, there are a few angels who question when Michael will fall as well, and when Joan hears them say this out loud, she goes ballistic, literally pulling a sword on them and forcing them to unsay their words.
  • Joan doesn't use technology outside of taking selfies with Michael, but if she did, she'd dedicate her Divinegram account to calling for a French theocracy and telling women they don't belong in the military.
