"Many years ago, a friend of mine was slain by one of those Exterminators. It hurt back then, but I realized those monsters, once they were through butchering every poor son of a bitch they could find, would leave behind great gifts. I took it upon myself to collect the weapons they would leave embedded in their prey, and sell them to my comrades right here in Hell's black market. The more weapons I sold, the more people joined me and my cause. Now, it's high time I give my boys the respect they deserve. You see, son, I've always wanted to become... Something of an Overlord. Just to see what it's like. Using our weapons, we'll storm through the Pentagram, and paint the Underground's name in the blood of its denizens. Their families, their children, and their children's children will finally respect... The Underground. And I want you to lead the charge-"
— Maulreese to Moxxie, revealing his plan to hostilely take over Pentagram City, and just before Moxxie fatally shot him.

Maulreese Jackjaw is a one-shot antagonist in Hazbin Hotel: Journey to the Light.

He serves as the main antagonist of "Worker Relations" episode in Chapter 4 and a posthumous antagonist in Moxxie's storyline in Chapter 5.

He was a hammerhead-shark sinner, Kingpin, and the highly charismatic leader of the Underground, a notorious criminal organization that sold holy weaponry within Pentagram City's black market. He formed a genuine friendship with Moxxie after the imp joined the Underground, which, unbeknownst to Maulreese, was secretly part of a plot for I.M.P to steal the Underground's weapons for their mission to kill the Happy Hotel crew.

Biography[]

Background[]

Maulreese was formerly a human who went to Hell following his death on Earth. On one Extermination Day, Maulreese's best friend was murdered by an Exterminators. Although saddened, Maulreese was inspired and began collecting Exterminator weaponry, selling it on Hell's black market. Over the years, he garnered a following of people, who he dubbed "the Underground", who followed him out of genuine loyalty, and assisted him in manufacturing Exterminator weaponry into various equipment such as bullets, swords, and knives. The Underground effectively became the organization to go to if one wanted to acquire holy weaponry, allowing Maulreese to rise through the ranks and achieve the status of a Kingpin.

Events of Hazbin Hotel: Journey to the Light[]

Chapter 4[]

In "Worker Relations", I.M.P is continuing their mission to kill the hotel crew after encountering Angel Dust, Fergus, Cherri Bomb, Baxter, and Crymini. However, Striker tells the team that he is nearly out of holy bullets, and killing the hotel crew will not happen without the proper ammunition, so the team heads down to Hell's black market where the Underground is located, but finds that the ground have temporarily suspended the selling of holy weaponry, due to the rumors of angels being within Hell. Blitzø decides to send Moxxie to go in undercover and gain the group's trust so that he and the team could rob them blind. As I.M.P watched from the distance, Moxxie approached the gang and requested that he could join them. The Underground were doubtful of the imp's potential as a member, but Moxxie insisted that he had the skill to keep up with them. Once of the Underground's members attacked Moxxie, but he easily took them down and kept the crew at bay with dual pistols. However, Maulreese Jackjaw himself appeared from the darkness, calling his crew off. Despite ominously approaching Moxxie, the leader expressed admiration in the imp for his bravery, stating that he more than earned the right to join their group, giving Moxxie his own Underground right arm patch.

Over the next few days, Moxxie began to do supply jobs for the Underground, officially in their ranks. As the days passed and Maulreese started to learn how competent and determined Moxxie was, they started to form something of a father-son relationship. He gave Moxxie praise for completing supply jobs and even took Moxxie's advice into consideration, something Blitzø rarely, if ever, did. Moxxie also started to bond with the Underground crew members to an extent he never had with I.M.P. (excluding his wife, Millie).

By the end of the week, Moxxie officially gained the full trust of Maulreese and the Underground, and garnered enough respect for him to allow Moxxie to call him by name. Maulreese took Moxxie to the Underground's stash of holy items, including handguns, rifles, knives, and even explosives. He explained to Moxxie how they acquired the items from the annual Exterminations. Unexpectedly, Maulreese then revealed his aspirations of becoming "something like an Overlord" by unleashing the Underground's angelic weaponry on Pentagram City's denizens in a violent takeover which he wanted Moxxie to lead. After hearing this, Moxxie immediately shot Maulreese in the chest with a holy handgun he had taken from a display case. As Maulreese slowly bled out, Moxxie, while choking back tears, said that, as extreme as his action was, he could not compromise his morals for the sake of approving his superior. Soon after Moxxie's speech, Maulreese finally collapsed to the floor after grasping for life, dying for the last time as his soul was erased from existence.

Immediately after his death, the members of the Underground attempted to avenge their fallen leader by killing Moxxie, only for them all to be slaughtered when Blitzø, Millie, Scorpius, Striker, Loona, and Vortex came to Moxxie's aide.

Personality[]

Unlike many leaders in Hell, Maulreese was a surprisingly affable, down-to-earth, and laid-back authority figure. He disliked unnecessary acts of violence and cruelty without good reason, only wanting to conquer Pentagram City so that he and his men could gain the respect he believed was deserved for them supplying the Pride Ring's higher-ups with angelic weaponry. While still ruthless, as he was willing to conquer Pentagram City and murder anyone who stood in the path of the Underground, he was generally honest and honorable in his dealings, and was a father to his men, metaphorically, even forming a friendship with Moxxie to the point where Moxxie was distraught and forlorn after having to kill him and the Underground. Nonetheless, he still maintained an air of brutality around his crewmates, understandably necessary to maintain his position as their leader.

Powers and Abilities[]

Natural Powers[]

  • Immortality: As a sinner, Maulreese lived eternally as an undead soul and never aged beyond his age of death.
    • Nigh-Invulnerability: Like all sinners, Maulreese was impervious to most forms of harm and could recover from horrific injuries with little effort. However, he was still very vulnerable to angelic weapons like every other demonic entity, and ultimately met his end when Moxxie shot him in the chest with a blessed handgun, thus erasing his soul.

Unique Powers[]

  • Enhanced Strength: Maulreese Jackjaw possessed a high amount of physical strength, as evidenced by his hulking appearance. While testing Moxxie's bravery, he used only one arm to effortlessly lift Moxxie in the air by the imp's hand.

Relationships[]

Others[]

Moxxie[]

"Maulreese: There's somethin' special about you, son. I'm glad to have you aboard.
Moxxie: Thank you, sir.
Maulreese: 'Sir'? (chuckles) Nah, call me Maulreese.
Moxxie: (eyes widen) O- Okay... (smiles warmly) Thank you, Maulreese.
"
— Maulreese praising Moxxie.

Maulreese was one of the few members of the Underground who saw Moxxie as more than just a weak imp. After recruiting Moxxie, he gave the imp a job with collecting supplies and cleaning the crew's weapons. Maulreese admired Moxxie's determination, developing an almost father-son relationship with the imp, praising him for his successes, taking his advice into consideration, and even draping his coat over Moxxie after he fell asleep cleaning the crew's weapons. Unfortunately for Maulreese, Moxxie was not willing to compromise his morals by helping the Underground attack Pentagram City all for Maulreese's approval, and reluctantly killed the leader of the Underground after he revealed his goals, leaving Maulreese devastated.

Maulreese's death left a profound impact on Moxxie, as he was brought to tears after shooting him fatally and was later seen sulking outside of I.M.P's van after they had slaughtered the rest of the Underground.

Quotes[]

"You hearin' this, boys? This little imp wants to join our gang... And I say he's just about earned it."
— Maulreese expressing his approval in Moxxie joining the Underground.
"Moxxie... Why? Why...?"
— Maulreese to Moxxie after the imp fatally shot him after he had revealed his malevolent nature, also his final words.

Trivia[]

  • His name is a play on the name "Maurice".
  • Maulreese is meant to serve as a counterpart to Blitzø, primarily in terms of how they manage their respective teams; While Blitzø is a hostile, incompetent, and borderline abusive (but still loving) boss towards Moxxie, Maulreese was an effective and fatherly leader to his men, even forming a genuine friendship with Moxxie that Blitzø has never achieved. Maulreese's men also followed him out of genuine loyalty, whereas it is implied that I.M.P only stay with Blitzø because he is very emotionally dependent on them.
  • Maulreese is discreetly referenced in the Chapter 5 episode "All's Fair in Wrath and War"; when Abaddon tries to recruit Moxxie into joining the Uprising, Moxxie cautiously asks Abaddon if he has any ulterior, unscrupulous goals in mind after overthrowing Azazel, his falling out with Maulreese and the Underground fresh in his mind.
