- "May the Root of Evil remain honored as we continue thy work."
- — The cult's motto.
The Order of the Serpentwood are an upcoming antagonist faction in Hazbin Hotel: Journey to the Light.
They are an Earth-based, deranged southern cult that worships the Root of Evil. They operate behind-the-scenes, regularly commit monstrous atrocities and bending society to normalize evil and destroy all moral civics, in efforts to honor Evil's name.
Description[]
The Order of the Serpentwood is a dark, malevolent cult that worships the Root of All Evil and rejects traditional religious beliefs, particularly the Trinity and morality. They see themselves as devoted servants of Evil, with their leader anointed as their king and vessel of this evil force in the human realm. Their goals include gaining and spreading forbidden knowledge, causing the downfall of society, and amassing wealth, with all of humanity and Creation bound to their will. The cult is deeply committed to their cause, pledging eternal allegiance to their leader and the evil they venerate.
The cult revels in evil and vile acts, celebrating them with childish enthusiasm. They gather openly and in public, burning stakes shaped like their sigils, performing jubilant sacrifices, and showering one another with apples in a twisted baptismal rite—a homage to the forbidden fruit.
The core beliefs of the cult are that the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil was a vessel for the Root of Evil by which Evil was able to poison the Universe with Sin, and that Evil should be praised for this. The cult believes that evil is righteous and the only path to salvation when the Root of Evil takes the world.
The deranged cult goes about their beliefs by perpetuating as much sin and vileness in the world - including cannibalism, the murder of their parents, and adhering to all of the Seven Deadly Sins - as a way to honor the Root of Evil.
Despite seeming like a mere backwoods cult, the Order of the Serpentwood is extremely powerful and influential. While not every single person on Earth is a part of it, they control its key positions. They control all facets of civics to maintain the protection of the Root of Evil and orchestrate the unwinding of morality and society itself.
Trivia[]
- The term "Serpentwood" is an alternate name for the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, which is the form the Root of Evil was contained in by the Light Beyond the Stars, until she was freed when Eve consumed the Forbidden Fruit.
- Roo herself is well aware of the cult's existence. While her full relationship with them can't be explored yet due to spoilers, what can be said is that she does find humor in her human followers' blind obedience despite her blatantly leading them toward self-destruction. She thinks it is utterly hilarious that humans even worship her in the first place, since they love her even though she is the reason their lives are miserable and that they will never reach salvation because of her.
- The cult refers to its lower-ranking members as "saplings", which is a word for an immature tree.
- The cult follows a strict color code, with its members consistently dressed in red, white, and black, whether in ceremonial attire or everyday clothing. This clearly serves as a tribute to Roo, whose signature look features a red, white, and black checkered pattern.
