- "This realm may look undesirable now, but it wasn't always like this. Eons ago, it was beautiful. [...] I witnessed its beauty, for a fleeting moment. A testament to God's gift of nature and wonder. Beautiful life, rich fauna, healthy planets with trees that stretched into the sky. That was, until the Devil destroyed everything, to remind us that even the most beautiful things can become twisted by evil."
- — Millicent
- "We've spent so long in this dingy nightmare dimension and I kinda fuckin' hate it here."
- — Angel Dust
- "Over these eight years, I only thought about one thing and the one thing was; escaping this fucking hellhole."
- — Fergus
Purgatory is a sentient dimension between Heaven and Hell that serves as the prison to Heaven's most dangerous and hostile adversaries.
Description[]
According to Millicent, Purgatory was once a beautiful, rich, and lush realm filled with an abundance of plant and alien life, and was meant to serve as a testament to nature's wonders if left untouched by life. However, after Satan and its followers was imprisoned in the dimension, the Devil's malevolent presence infected Purgatory itself; the majority of Purgatory's lifeforms and planets were drained of their lives and/or resources, destroying all that was sacred and beautiful in the dimension and therefore rendering it uninhabitable to most forms of life.
Shortly after Satan's imprisonment, Purgatory's walls were exponentially strengthened by the seven seals, which were created by God to suppress the Devil and its servants, and a group of ten cherubs were sent to defend the seven seals from being weakened, though nearly all were killed by the Army of Darkness over their billions of years defending them. The seals enchanted Purgatory so that it could only be accessed or exited by archangels, cherubs, or non-demonic extremely powerful supernatural entities such as Death and the Light Beyond the Stars. These seals were instantly destroyed when Roo absorbed the power of Heaven's Light.
In the present, Purgatory is largely dead, depressing, and lifeless, with Satan itself claiming that its resources have long ran thin. All planets within are dead with next to no plant life or water, while the only alien life still remaining is hostile, such as the Queen Spider. Though seemingly completely void of life at first, Purgatory does have some hidden humanoid life who are forced to live underground to avoid being drained by Satan or its wildlife.
Entering the black holes of Purgatory often subjects individuals to the dimension's control, manifesting their worst fears, haunting their dreams, and distorting their reality through apparitions, visions, and illusions. One of Purgatory's own manifestations, a conjuration of Lucifer, refers to this phenomenon as "Purgatory shenanigans." Purgatory is almost like a sentient dimension, in this regard.
Trivia[]
- In Christianity, Purgatory is a realm inhabited by the souls of sinners who are expiating their sins before going to Heaven.
- One of the biggest differences between Purgatory and most dimensions is that, in Purgatory, time is not a fixed construct; nothing flows with the same regularity as Earth, therefore time in Purgatory is far different than most dimensions. When the Hazbin gang were trapped in Purgatory, eight years had passed until they managed to escape, but outside of Purgatory, it had only been three weeks.
