- "Listen, Sunshine. You've been real nice to me. I appreciate it. But I've done shit that you can't bounce back from. Your dad turned me into a cat, I got ran over and stepped on, and to top it off everyone thinks it's soooo funny to tease me because I don't like being a fucking cat. A- And yeah, it's all in good fun, as everyone says, but the reality is, eventually, you just get tired of the same repetitive jokes being thrown at you. That's how it is, right? I'm the punching bag and I'm supposed to pretend it doesn't hurt... Even if it does. So... Let me down, before I ruin your suit with my cat piss."
- — Ren to Charlie.
Ren is a supporting character in Hazbin Hotel: Journey to the Light.
They were a sinner who, upon their rebirth, was cursed and transformed into a cat by Lucifer for slighting the King of Hell. Following this, they would go on to check themselves in to the Hazbin Hotel to get away from all the chaos in Hell, where they were appointed to be the hotel's mascot by Charlie Magne. Shortly afterward, Ren discovered that he could also turn into a key that was capable of opening every door in the Hazbin Hotel.
When the hotel crew set out to release Forti from his prison in Limbo, it was decided by the Trials of Limbo that Ren would be the soul needed to free Forti. After an emotional goodbye to the hotel crew, Ren sacrificed themselves to Limbo and freed Forti, wanting to be remembered for saving the Universe and not for what they did while they were alive. Lux was able to recover what was left of Ren's soul in the form of the Hazbin Hotel's key, leaving that as what was presumed to be all that was left of Ren.
Personality
Ren initially started off as sarcastic, bitter, suicidal, and foul-mouthed, largely due to being transformed into a cat and the hotel crew members such as Angel Dust, Niffty, and Fergus teasing them. They were an introvert who hated crowds and loud noises, preferring to either be on their own or surround themselves with a small group of like-minded people. One of Ren's earliest character traits is that they hated their cat form so much that they would always try to kill themselves in overly elaborate ways in hopes of regenerating in another form, only for their attempts to fail miserably.
While Ren initially hated their cat form and despised being treated like a cat, they still seemed to enjoy being stroked and pet like a cat, as well as wrapping themselves on someone's shoulders.
They started off viewing the hotel crew as annoying for their constant picking on them, but grew to be friends with most of them after Charlie promoted them as the hotel's mascot, barring everyone from making a mockery of them. Through and through, they were very quick-witted, making sarcastic and sassy remarks at their enemies or the other hotel members for their own amusement. Much like Vaggie, Ren tended to be fairly sensible, and upon getting attached to the hotel crew as their found family, was even willing to put themselves in harm's way to save them, since they never seemed to have much regard for their afterlife in the first place. Over their time with the hotel crew, Ren learned to accept change, eventually taking a liking to their cat form and learning to accept it.
Appearance
Ren's default form was that of a small black and pinkish-white cat. They have one eye with a red pupil, and two spots, one of which is at the tip of their tail, and the other of which is near the tip of their ears that forms a heart when close together. They have scruffy fur and wear a red collar with the Hazbin Hotel's address on it. They seem to lack a mouth, yet can still speak without it.
Ren's secondary form was the key of the Hazbin Hotel; a small, black key with an eye in the center and sides that resemble angel wings. When in their key form, Ren was capable of blinking and move their eye.
Powers and Abilities
Natural Powers
- Immortality: TBA
- Nigh-Invulnerability: Ren was capable of surviving horrific injuries that would effortlessly kill a human, much less a normal cat. Like all sinners, they could survive being flattened, shot, thrown violently into surfaces, and even dismembered, their regeneration allowing them to endure all of these brutalities.
- Regeneration: Ren could regenerate from horrifying injuries; upon being transforming into a cat, they were run over by a semi-truck and flattened like a pancake, but almost instantly regenerated good as new, rebuilding their crushed bones and internal organs in just under a second. During the Vees' assault on the Hazbin Hotel, Ren's tail was shot off by a goon, though they were able to easily regenerate their tail back after rushing behind cover.
Unique Powers
- Creation: Ren could cough up sentient, mischievous hairballs. This power often happened unintentionally and as Ren noted, the hairballs had a 50/50 chance of being a nuisance, though they have proved useful in combat situations.
- Shapeshifting: Ren could change their form by instantly switching between a demonic cat and the key of the Hazbin Hotel. After sacrificing themselves to free Forti, all that was left of Ren was their key form, which was recovered by Lux. While shapeshifting, Ren would briefly become surrounded by a small plumb of smoke and fire.
Abilities
- Agility: TBA
- Pointy Tip: Ren's key form proved to be quite deadly in combat when Fergus used Ren's key form, against their will, to stab the Vees' underlings in their eyes, horribly injuring them and allowing Fergus to go for the killing blow.
Weaknesses
- Divine Intervention: Like all sinners, Ren could be permanently erased or gravely injured by holy weaponry such as holy bullets and angelic spears, as these weapons are capable of destroying the souls of all demons.
- Hemophobia: Ren got queasy at the sight of blood and guts, even throwing up after Fergus used their key form to stab several of the Vees' henchmen in their eye sockets. As a direct result of this, they were very reluctant to fight anyone.
- Immobility: While in their key form, Ren was completely incapable of moving anything except their eye and had to rely on others to help them get around.

Ren: Yeah?
Husk: Welcome to Hell." - — Husk and Ren.
- "Fergus: Ren, I need you to turn into something right the fuck now!
Ren: But I can only-
Fergus: (they are nearly blown up by a gang member's grenade, until Fergus rolls out of the way, grabbing Ren) NOW, DAMN IT!
Ren: Ok, ok, shit! (they transform into the Hazbin Hotel's key, falling to the ground as Fergus stares down at them incredulously) ...What?
Fergus: Ren... What the fuck is this?
Ren: What did you expect?!
Fergus: A fucking key?! What am I supposed to do? Lock them to death?
Ren: You know this is the only thing I can turn into, you dipshit!
Fergus: (a small group of the Vees' underlings begin approaching their cover) Y'know what... This is fine... (he picks up Ren, holding him like a knife) I just gotta... Aim for the eyes.
Ren: Wait, what?
Fergus: You ever seen the inside of someone's brain, Ren?
Ren: Fergus, I swear to fucking God-
Fergus: The key...
Ren: FERGUS, STOP!

Chapter 2
- "Ren: Here's something I don't understand. If you wanna sabotage this place so much, why do you keep helping us? You're not exactly doing a good job.
Alastor: Hahahaha! Where in Hell did you get an idea like that?! I don't want to sabotage this operation! No, sir, I want the hotel to be the best it can possibly be!
Ren: Why?
Alastor: Why...? (chuckles darkly) ...Because watching people fail is all the sweeter when they were given every chance possible to succeed." - — Alastor and Ren's conversation after Alastor and Charlie's duet Heaven 2 Hell.
- "Vaggie: You don't have to do this, Ren.
Ren: Aw, c'mon, Vaggie...
Vaggie: No, no, this isn't a fucking joke! You can't just throw yourself away like this! There has to be something we can do!
Ren: (shakes with head) This is the only way. You heard the omniscient archangel.
Vaggie: You don't deserve this.
Ren: If I go through with this, that means there's a chance, even a small one, that sinners can be redeemed and go to Heaven! From my perspective, that's less than what I deserve.
Vaggie: (with tears streaming down her face) You were supposed to be the first to be redeemed...
Ren: Hey, hey.... I am. (after a pause, Vaggie picks Ren up and hugs them tightly, to which Ren nuzzles her with their head and climbs on her shoulders, wrapping themselves around her neck) Take care of yourself, and prove Charlie's asshole dad wrong for me, ok?
Vaggie: (laughs slightly and sniffles) I'm so happy I met you.
Ren: Hasta luego, cocodrilo.
Vaggie: (chuckles again) You didn't butcher it this time.
Ren: What can I say? I had an awesome teacher. (he nuzzles Vaggie one final time) You're my friend for life, never forget that." - — Ren and Vaggie's goodbye.
