- "I'm the reason why you feel every lick of pain yer experiencing right now. Every death, tragedy, dark cloud, negative emotion. You name it, s'all on me, mate. I'm the reason why right now, you're rackin' your brain thinkin' of the most excruciating ways that you can kill me. (she uses her roots to pin Charlie to the ground, tapping the fiery princesses' forehead) That's right, luv. I see aaaaallll those nasty thoughts ya try to keep hidden... (she cackles and leans into Charlie's face) I am the ROOT OF ALL EVIL. And that look on yer pretty lil' face gives me all the reaction I want."
- — Roo to Charlie.
Evil, also known as The Root of All Evil, Roo, and formerly the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, is the main antagonist of Hazbin Hotel: Journey to the Light.
She serves as the unseen overarching antagonist of Chapters 1-4 and the overarching antagonist (next to Leviathan Von Eldritch) of Chapter 5.
She is an eldritch, omnimalevolent entity responsible for the Original Sin that brought on humanity's fall from grace, serving as the source of all suffering and the embodiment of Creation's flaws. A parasitic black hole of evil that endlessly feeds on sin to fuel her power, all sinners are spiritually connected to the Roo upon damnation, their transgressions, self-loathing, and negative thoughts empowering her.
The twin sister and counterpart to Asherah, Roo was the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil that held the Forbidden Fruit in Eden, using it as a seed to propagate her poison - Forbidden Knowledge, corruption, suffering, sickness and death. Roo wants everybody to be just as heartless as she is, with many pawns, tools, and puppets at her disposal.
After eons of imprisonment and being suppressed by the annual Extermination, the Root of Evil manipulated the Princess of Hell, Charlie Magne by acting as a tragic loner, forging a one-sided friendship with the princess where she promised to restore the princesses' hotel and give her and her crew further protection, on the condition that the princess free her from her imprisonment. After helping princesses' dream of reforming sinners and ending the Extermination become a reality, Evil revealed her cruel trick to Charlie, unleashing carnage across the seven rings upon being freed.
Due to her being the creator of sin itself, damning Earth and humanity, corrupting Hell into the realm of sin and evil that it is (leading to the creation of the Extermination), and being responsible for everything wrong with Creation, the Root of Evil serves as the catalyst for all of the events that take place in the series.
Biography
Background
The Root of Evil came into Creation as the manifestation of Forbidden Knowledge, Evil, Chaos and Entropy, serving as one of the Pillars of Creation as old as Creation itself. She cruelly used her foresight for personal gain; Anticipating the creation of the Universe, the Root of Evil schemed to poison it with her influence and feed off of the sins and carnage that would ensue to satisfy her desire for complete chaos and suffering. When she was confronted by the Light Beyond the Stars, Roo, mad with unchecked power, challenged the Light Beyond the Stars, only for them to contain the Root of Evil in her weakened state, for she was unable to draw upon the wickedness of other entities to sustain her power. Nevertheless, during a struggle, she managed to influence at least one of the Lights Beyond the Stars.
When the Earth was made, the Light Beyond the Stars punished the Root of Evil by reducing her into the form of a tree and planting her outside the Edenic Garden on Earth. Thus, ironically, the Root of Evil's essence became a contributor to the very realm she sought to poison. God then created Adam and Eve as the first humans. Despite bestowing them with paradise, God imposed a single prohibition on consuming the fruit that sprouted from the Root of Evil's branches, labeling her as the "Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil" and warning them that if they ate upon her branches, they would know suffering and death. Adam and Eve listened to God's directive for several decades. Despite being reduced to a tree, Evil patiently waited for a chance to escape, slowly growing stronger from the negative feelings Eve would occasionally feel in moments of dismay.
One fateful day in Eden, Adam sent Eve to forage for fresh food beyond their sanctuary. While venturing off into Eden, Eve accidentally fell down a steep hill which led her to slide directly in front of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, which God had forbade her and Adam to eat from. Eve figured that eating from food around the tree wouldn't do any harm, so she harvested food that surrounded the tree. While collecting food, Eve was shocked to hear the Tree beginning to speak to her.
Eve was understandably confused and startled, as no other trees in Eden were capable of speech. The Tree, who goes by the name "Roo", stirs and preys on Eve's curiosity by telling her that the fruit from the tree would be able to give her the power of free will and thought, and allow her to know more than God Himself. Eve told the tree that God had told her to not eat of the tree, but Roo replied that God desires her to be a slave to Adam, and goes as far as to tell her that Eve only found the tree because it willed her to, and she will have these abilities if she eats the Forbidden Fruit. Eve is torn between disobeying God and desiring more knowledge and freedom, so Roo sings a song tempting Eve to eat the fruit (specifically a parody of "Eat It" by "Weird Al" Yankovic). After Roo conjured the Forbidden Fruit and the animals living in her branches (which were actually Roo's clones taking the perverted form of Eden's wildlife) began encouraging her, Eve succumbed to the temptation and ate the fruit Roo had bestowed to her. Upon this, the Root of Evil laughed maniacally, knowing she had already won.

Evil's influence spreading to Earth.
Upon eating the fruit, and for added cruelty, Eve's body was taken over by an inner demon (later known as Lilith) which was created from the magic of the Forbidden Fruit, causing Eve to be trapped and forever tortured in her own mind, doomed to be driven to insanity from a lack of social interaction, the worst punishment for a human. Later, Adam and Lilith gained self-awareness and began to feel negative emotions, such as lust, fear, and shame upon discovering that they were naked. Eve gained her independence that the Root of All Evil had promised her, but also became heartless, insane, and devoid of humanity. God punished Adam and Eve by banishing them from Eden, but continued to watch other them.
As a result of the effects of eating the Forbidden Fruit, Adam, Eve, and all of mankind were cursed to know pain, sickness, old age, death, and be naturally born with sin, as the Root of Evil had willed it so. The Root of Evil's malevolent influence had spread to the Earth, and thus her power grew exponentially. She laughed and danced as she had effectively destroyed Paradise and corrupted humanity, ensuring that Earth would never become the utopian paradise it was intended to be and that humans would stray further from Heaven than those who would seek it.
Evil was indirectly responsible for the War in Heaven; through enabling instilling sin naturally in humans, she indirectly (though, given her cunning and genius, perhaps intentionally) motivated Lucifer to wage a war against God after the prince witnessed first-hand the evil that humanity was capable of.
However, the Root of Evil was not done with Lilith yet. She observed the demon she had created, witnessing Lilith's collaboration and marriage to Lucifer in establishing Hell as their sanctuary. Lilith, through her songs, sought to instill hope among her damned subjects, much to Evil's disdain. Aware of Lilith and Lucifer's desire for offspring, Evil discreetly cursed Lilith, decreeing that all children she would conceive with Lucifer would be born lifeless, leaving the couple in an agonizing cycle of futile attempts to conceive a living one. Despite this, Evil relented when Charlotte, their first living child, was conceived.
On the night of Charlotte's birth, Evil confronted Lilith, revealing the curse she had cast upon Lilith, much to Lilith's rage. Charlotte's existence, Evil claimed, was fragile, serving as a spark of hope that could be easily snuffed out. To spare Charlotte from the fate of her stillborn siblings, Evil demanded that Lilith abandon her efforts to inspire hope and instead use her music to spread chaos, malevolence, and rebellion against Heaven, thus empowering Evil with the sins of the eternally damned. Reluctantly, Lilith agreed, choosing to sacrifice the purity of her music to safeguard her daughter from despair, ultimately transforming Hell into a realm of darkness and suffering it would become known as.
At some point following this, Evil would be imprisoned in Purgatory. Despite this, she would continue to draw power from the misdeeds of Hell's inhabitants. With each arrival of a sinner in Hell, their essence becomes intertwined with the Root of Evil akin to roots entwining a tree. Their transgressions and sins serve as nourishment, fueling the Root's strength much like sunlight, water, and soil sustain a tree's growth. The Root, in turn, feeds upon them like a parasitic entity. As the strength and numbers of Hell's sinful population increased over the centuries, Heaven was terrified that the Root of Evil would become so powerful that even Purgatory couldn't contain her. The archangels Azrael and Michael suggested a plan wherein Azrael and his personal army, the Exorcists, would descend to Hell to reduce the sinner population significantly by destroying their souls, thus preventing the Root of Evil from feeding off their wrongdoings. Although Heaven hesitated to endorse the idea, driven by fear, they reluctantly agreed to Azrael's extremist proposal. Whenever a sinner's soul would be obliterated, their connection to Evil was severed, and it inflicted agonizing pain upon the Root of Evil and weakened her.
The denizens of Hell are aware of Evil's existence, and she is a beloved entity in Hell's society. The denizens of Hell even made a mural of her true form that was sprayed on the Pentagram City clock tower, the clock tower itself being nicknamed "Big Roo". The Root of Evil is also worshipped by a great percentage of humans on Earth.
Events of Hazbin Hotel: Journey to the Light
Chapter 2
Though she does not physically appear, Evil can be heard in "The Lost Angel" among the many familiar and unfamiliar voices calling out to Charlie during her séance to contact Manco; just as the séance witch propelled the princess' soul to Purgatory using a mystical drink, the Root of Evil could be heard vaguely telling Charlie that she was waiting for her.
Chapter 5
In "A Complete Shitshow", Charlie hits one of her lowest points after discovering that the Hazbin Hotel was destroyed during the flood that Leviathan had created to destroy the seven rings. With her passion project literally in shambles, Charlie wanders through the devastated Pentagram City, singing a song expressing her sorrows ("Never Say I Didn't Try"), before sulking in her knees in front of the Pentagram's clock tower with Razzle and Dazzle comforting her. Suddenly, Charlie hears a friendly voice calling to her from within the clock tower. She is confused as the voice asks Charlie is she trusts it, to which she said she would not be sure unless she knew who she was speaking to. During an ensuing conversation, the spirit claims to be a social outcast for their appearance, and that society somehow put them in the clock tower to forget about. The spirit asks to be friends with Charlie. The voice requested that Charlie put her hand on the tower's mural so they could meet. Muddled, yet curious, Charlie did as she was told, just before a hand grabbed her hand and pulled her into the tower, revealing a hidden portal, though Razzle and Dazzle are about to cling onto her as they free-fall into a dark dimension filled with mountains of garbage.
Charlie, Razzle, and Dazzle wander through the dimension and eventually happen upon its sole, strange inhabitant; a spirit rummaging under the trash. Revealing themselves to be the one who summoned Charlie inside, the spirit, who calls themselves 'Roo', makes their appearance, taking the form of the princesses' forgotten imaginary, childhood friend to make Charlie feel comfortable. Roo reveals herself to be an eccentric, yet lonely person who desperately wants to escape her dimension, though she was able to find comfort in hoarding trash and discarded treasures. Roo attempts to make a deal with Charlie, saying that she will restore the princesses' hotel on the condition that she will help her escape from the dimension. Charlie, knowing she cannot just instantly trust any spirit she comes across, responds that she will ponder it. When Roo begins sadly lamenting on not being able to be accepted by other people, Charlie, feeling sympathetic, leans towards trusting Roo, telling the spirit that she will help her escape. After making the princess pinky-promise on it, Roo hugs Charlie tightly and invites her to come to her prison whenever the princess needs help or wants to, and also requests that she bring her friends along the next time she visits. Roo then bids Charlie a goodbye and transports her out of the dimension through a tornado made of trash, leaving the princess feeling reinvigorated as she now has the assistance of a powerful spirit.
In "Make New Friends but Keep Roo", Charlie informs the hotel crew about Roo before eventually paying the spirit another visit, this time bringing Vaggie and Charlie's Angels to meet her as well. Roo seems excited to meet Charlie's friends, though Vaggie remains very skeptical towards Roo and her intentions. Roo greets each and every one of Charlie's Angels, including encouraging Giulia to violently protect Roo's trash collection from her clones and giving Simon a suit of armor made from trash. She finally gets to Manco, but things turn sour as she ends up giving him an anxiety attack by asking him about his time in Purgatory. At that point, Vaggie and Charlie step in, the former separating Roo from Manco and the latter calming him down a little.
Roo is confused at what just happened, though Charlie explains that Purgatory is an extremely sensitive topic for Manco due to the horrific psychological torture he experienced at the hands of Satan. Roo is angry at herself, though Charlie tells her that everything is alright, and Roo simply needs to work on improving her social skills. When the topic of conversation becomes about Vaggie, Roo tells Charlie that she should marry Vaggie because she of her loyalty, to which Charlie reveals to Roo that she has been considering proposing to Vaggie. Roo is ecstatic about this and excitedly tries to keep quiet about the situation, and has to be held down by her clones.
Elsewhere, Giulia continues warding off Roo's malicious clones, only to run into the creatures who inhabit Roo's dimension, malevolent creatures made from a viscous fluid that Roo calls the "Sludgelings". They chase Giulia with the intent to kill her, and she begins screaming for help. Roo and the others hear her cries of distress and run to her position. Upon seeing what is happening, Roo tells everyone about the Sludgelings before a full-scale brawl breaks out them in battle. The fight escalates into a full-on Looney Tunes-esque battle, with Roo creating a full-sized horse made of sludge to trample the Sludgelings before letting Simon take the reins. During the fight, Roo encourages Manco - who is watching from the sidelines at Charlie's behest - to help his friends, and forces him to battle a pair of Sludgelings. Manco tries to talk the creatures down, but they continue to try and attack him. He narrowly dodges their attacks, only to see Megara get cornered by four Sludgelings. Vaggie tries to save her, but is overwhelmed by the sheer number of Sludgelings. When Roo shouts at and pressures Manco to fight, he becomes overwhelmed with anxiety and finally fights back, accidentally unleashing his angelic power onto the Sludgelings and vaporizing them with angelic energy blasts, much to Roo's pleasure. Manco looks at himself in astonishment as Roo cheers him on and encourages him to kill the other Sludgelings. Reluctantly, Manco destroys several more Sludgelings until the rest of them all run away in fear.
While Charlie and Vaggie are checking on Giulia, Roo continues lauding Manco for unleashing his powers on the Sludgelings. Manco is very shaken and traumatized from killing the Sludgelings, so Roo seemingly comforts him by saying that he had to do it to protect his friends, before telling him that killing things gets easier every time. Roo tells Manco that if he listens to her, he'll be capable of great things, and that they are a team. Soon after, Charlie and company leave the dimension, with Vaggie giving Roo a burning glare before she exits.
In "Good Will Accept You...", Charlie, against Vaggie's wishes, pays another visit to Roo's dimension, this time bringing Alastor and Mimzy with her. Roo excitedly meets them and seems particularly happy to meet Alastor, having heard the stories of how he terrorized Pentagram City, begging him to give her the full story. Roo uses her powers to summon a table and chairs her herself and everyone else to chat at. Once everyone is situated, Roo conjures drinks for each of them, hard liquor for Alastor, milkshakes for Mimzy, tea for Charlie, and "blood" for herself.
Hours later, everyone is having a blast and Roo and Alastor have gotten along famously. At this point, Mimzy says that she must give Roo a makeover, insisting that she must look appealing if she wants to be accepted by most people. Roo reluctantly agrees to this and receives a makeover by Mimzy. Mimzy tidies up Roo's clothes and gives her more traditional clothing taken from her trash collection, along with giving her a black and red jacket and makeup. Eventually, Mimzy and Alastor leave, to which Roo immediately shifts back to her previous form and chews Mimzy out for making her look like a "poof". Charlie then gets down to business and tells Roo about Heaven's Light, and that she needs her help finding the full extent of its powers. To Charlie's surprise, Roo says that she can "wake up" Heaven's Light and ignite its powers, but her powers are currently restricted due to the nature of the prison dimension. Charlie says that she will help Roo regain her powers once she is ready to embark on the quest. Before Charlie leaves, Roo asks if she can give the princess a makeover of her own, which Charlie, despite seeming uncertain at first, agrees to.
Roo excitedly begins using magic to change Charlie's appearance greatly, surrounding the princess in magical fire that warps her appearance and clothing. Due to Roo's influence, Charlie's eyes are now red, she looks slightly older, and her suit sports a sharper appearance with her trousers now being bright red to fit her jacket. Charlie is taken aback by Roo's changes and thanks Roo for it, though her only complaint is that she now resembles Katie Killjoy. Roo waves off Charlie's complaints and insists that, instead of looking like the Pillsbury Doughboy, she looks confidant and ready to handle whatever is thrown her way, emboldening the princess. Charlie then returns to the hotel crew, who are shocked by her new look, with Vaggie being especially aghast.
In "A Dream Realized", Charlie comes up with a plan for the hotel and its crew to bounce back after the hotel was destroyed in the flood caused by Leviathan. Knowing she cannot restore the hotel herself as it is being patrolled by Insurgency members, Charlie starts off by visiting Roo so that the spirit can fulfill her promise of rebuilding the Hazbin Hotel. After the princess creates a magical mirror to where the hotel previously stood, Roo uses her immense power restore the Hazbin Hotel bigger and better than ever, and as a cherry on top, places a magical, protective, red bubble around the hotel to ensure that it will always be safe from intruders or any hazards. Charlie is left in joyful tears over this and gives Roo a tight hug, promising to repay the spirit for what she has done.
Following this, the hotel crew all work together to advertise and market the hotel. Over the following week, the hotel becomes more successful than it has ever been, with hundreds of sinners checking in to the hotel either for redemption or refuge, and Charlie feeling on top of the world.
In "A Rotation of Power", Roo is confronted by Vaggie in her prison dimension, who demands to know the spirit's origins. Roo, acting chummy, gives vague answers to Vaggie's questions, reiterating her story that people did not like her for her appearance and nature and locked her within the dimension. When she realizes that Roo will not give the full story, Vaggie tells Roo that she does not trust her at all, since she is changing Charlie and insinuating that she tried to get Giulia killed, and that Charlie will leave her to rot in her prison when she realizes her pernicious nature. When Vaggie heads to leave, Roo escalates the situation by suggesting that Vaggie is possessive of Charlie, telling the sinner that she wants Charlie all to herself and holds the princess back from succeeding because she fears that Charlie will leave her. Vaggie angrily points her spear at Roo, telling her that she knows nothing about her life or past. Roo smugly replies that Charlie doesn't either, reminding Vaggie that she has never told Charlie about her past as an Exterminator.
For the very first time, the Root of Evil shows her true colors as she begins sadistically taunting Vaggie over her past and forces her to relive her trauma by conjuring magical mirrors depicting the Exterminators' atrocities. She threatens to tell Charlie and the angel children about her past, to which Vaggie screams that she is no longer an Exterminator before hurling her spear at Roo. Roo easily stops the spear before continuing to belittle Vaggie's trauma, telling the sinner that Charlie is no longer Vaggie's best mate, but is instead hers. Roo tells Vaggie that she is no different than the hundreds of deal makers who have tried to use the princess in the past before opening a portal that forces Vaggie to leave the dimension. After Vaggie leaves, Roo returns to sorting a pile a dirty cans.
In "Let There Be Lux", Charlie finally goes back to Roo's dimension to help the spirit reach her full power. Roo is ecstatic to see Charlie, though less so when she notices Vaggie is coming along as well in order to ensure Charlie is safe and Roo does not try to pull anything. As agreed, Charlie brings Heaven's Light with them, much to Roo's joy. The three begin their journey to find the "Thingo" - which is the source of Roo's power - when Roo takes Charlie and Vaggie to a gargantuan mountain of trash that extends into the sky, claiming that they must climb it to get where they want. As the three begin manually climbing the trash mountain, Roo and Charlie begin singing a duet expressing their determination, harmonizing while knocking debris onto the struggling Vaggie. Towards the end of the musical number, Charlie begins using her angelic wings to fly up the mountain while Roo propels herself by clinging onto a massive root she springs from the ground. Vaggie looks up at the two and begins frowning, though her spirits are lifted when Charlie flies back down and carries her up the "mountain".
When the trio finally reach the peak, they discover a whole other plane of the dimension. Charlie and Vaggie marvel at how massive Roo's dimension is. The three continue venturing and walking for hours while Roo tells Charlie and Vaggie about all of her adventures. At nightfall, the three rest up for the night around a fire and Roo cooks Charlie and Vaggie a very unappealing dinner (specifically a moldy, mushroom-laden piece of steak covered in maggots and dead flies with a blinking eyeball in the center) which Charlie politely declines. As they sit around the fire, Roo says that she's told Charlie and Vaggie all of her secrets before tormentingly asking Vaggie if there are any secrets she wants to share. Now uncomfortable, Vaggie leaves to keep watch outside the camp. Now that the two are alone, Roo and Charlie begin talking about their dreams and aspirations as the princess tells the spirit what she wanted to be when she grew up, and although her goals didn't turn out how she wanted, she is certain things are going to get better. Charlie asks Roo who she would be, if he wasn't confide to the dimension anymore. Another musical number ensues as Roo opens up to Charlie on who she would wish to be. At the same time, a forlorn Vaggie sings her own song as she stands apart from the two, alone, lamenting her current situation, Charlie slipping away from her, and wonders how Charlie will ever forgive her once the truth comes out.
The next day, the trio finally make it to that location, where they find the Thingo, which is a gigantic, swirling black mass which is being constricted by white, tentacle-like beams of light. Charlie and Vaggie are understandably confused at this, and Roo says that the Thingo is her true power, and her captors are using the light to suppress it. Roo tells Charlie and Vaggie that they need to sever the light from the Thingo, but just as they try to get started, they are under siege by a gigantic Ophanim angel who is determined to stop them. Charlie has no idea what it is, so Roo tells the two that the Ophanim is her captor before ducking for cover as Charlie and Vaggie attempt to fight the angel. Charlie and Vaggie are clearly outmatched by the Ophanim angel in every way, but Charlie keeps fighting, determined to fulfill her promise to Roo.
After a long, arduous battle, Charlie and Vaggie are easily bested as the angel knocks them both to the ground and immobilizes Charlie by placing glyphs underneath her. Vaggie shields Charlie with her own body as the Ophanim hover over them, and while the angel is distracted, Roo is able to stealthily sever the light from the Thingo. Now nearly at full power, Roo saves Charlie and Vaggie by summoning dozens of roots to constrict the Ophanim angel, using her roots break its rings apart. As it is being overpowered, the Ophanim angel appears to begin speaking, which only Vaggie seems to understand due to her nature as a fallen saint. Before the angel could finish its proclamation, Roo torturously and sadistically kills the Ophanim by graphically plunging her spiked roots into its eye and absorbing its power as it roars in agony, eventually killing it as it dissipates into nothingness.
After everything settles down and Roo helps Charlie to her feet, Charlie proclaims that Roo is finally free, though Roo reveals that she actually isn't, but is one step closer to being free and that the "hard part" is over. Roo is then able to summon eldritch power from the dimension and tells Charlie to bring out Heaven's Light. Charlie takes out Heaven's Light and tries to present it to Roo, but the Light begins freaking out when it sees Roo, screeching and trying to get itself and Charlie away from her. Charlie comforts and soothes the Light before finally presenting it to Roo. Roo and Charlie both grab hold of the Light as Roo transfers an otherworldly power into the Light. Heaven's Light begins shaking violently and sending rays of light everywhere. Vaggie runs to the two and pulls Charlie away, shielding the princess just as a massive explosion occurs.
During the explosion, Vaggie is hit with a ray of light which shows her horrifying visions of the past and future; she first sees the Beginning, depicting the creation of the Light Beyond the Stars and the peace and harmony of the light beings going to ruin after Satan was corrupted by a malevolent force. She is then thrown into the future, depicting Hell in a state of ruin and eventually imploding onto itself as the Divine and Satan tower over the bodies of a billion souls.
Eventually, Vaggie is woken up by Charlie, who is relieved to see that she is alright. Vaggie tells Charlie that the Ophanim told them they made a "grave mistake" before it was killed. Before they could ponder what it meant, they look up to see that Heaven's Light has escaped the dimension. Roo whoops and cheers, proclaiming the Light has been woken up. Charlie thanks Roo profusely and hugs her, telling the spirit that, although she has no way to truly repay her, setting her free will be the first step. Roo excitedly opens a portal for Charlie and Vaggie to leave, telling them to find the Light before other demons do. Charlie and Vaggie exit, but not before Vaggie stares at Roo with a burning glare as the spirit grins at her with satisfaction.
In "All the Best Royals Have Daddy Issues", Roo is visited by Charlie, who is ecstatic to see the princess since she hasn't seen her in weeks, and asks how Lux is doing. Charlie apologizes for not visiting Roo enough and says that Lux has been a big boost for the crew's morale. The princess notices that Roo's roots have spread far across her prison, and Roo explains that it is a side-effect of unlocking 50% of her power. Roo proudly unveiled her new extraordinary feats by revealing the rifts she had torn in the fabric of reality. Through these rifts, she facilitated the arrival of cascades of garbage from diverse corners of the multiverse, a sight that left Charlie in awe. Roo, however, appeared to regard this astonishing display of power as a mundane and routine task, showcasing the extent of her formidable abilities with nonchalant confidence.
The conversation takes a grim turn when Charlie reveals to Roo that she is engaged to Vaggie. Roo's attitude darkens and she begins pressuring Charlie into calling off the wedding and breaking ties with Vaggie. Charlie is perplexed by Roo's sudden attitude shift, and Roo insists that Vaggie wants her to stay to continue being imprisoned and is taking advantage of Charlie. Roo's desperate attitude turns to anger when she says that Vaggie is driving Charlie away from her, noting Charlie's declining number of visits. An angered and betrayed Roo begins screaming at Charlie that she is taking advantage of her and will leave her like everyone else, her roots bursting from the ground as a frightened Charlie backs away. Composing herself, Charlie promises that she will never abandon Roo, but she also will never leave Vaggie. Roo seemingly accepts this with reluctance, and Charlie leaves Roo's dimension after being excused. Shortly after the princess leaves, the Root of Evil shares a grin with one of her roots, a plan forming in her head.
In the Chapter 5 finale "Exeunt Omnes", Charlie, accompanied by Manco and the rest of Charlie's Angels, visits Roo's prison. Roo greets Charlie, but her cheerfulness quickly turns to tears as the princess breaks down emotionally. Tearfully, Charlie delivers the heartbreaking news of Vaggie's passing, and Roo offers her heartfelt condolences. Providing words of encouragement, Roo lifts Charlie's spirits, and the determined princess stands tall, prepared to thwart the Divine's efforts to unleash Satan's return. Charlie requests that Roo watch over the children, not wanting to see any more loved ones hurt. Roo graciously accepts the responsibility. Charlie consoles the grieving children, all of whom are still reeling from Vaggie's loss, before rushing to face the Divine within the Wrath Ring.
When the hotel crew faces off against the Divine and Satan within the Wrath Ring, Manco voices his concern to Roo, wondering if Charlie can effectively handle Satan and its minions. Roo reassures him, drawing from the fact that Manco survived an encounter with Satan before. However, the comforting exchange takes a dark turn as Roo delves into Manco's past trauma, recounting his harrowing experiences, including the times where even after escaping, he would wake up screaming, thinking he was back in Purgatory. Manco is overwhelmed by the memories, pleading for Roo to stop as she ominously looms over him. In a shocking revelation, Roo discloses her true identity, confirming that she was there all along, pulling Satan's strings.
In the Wrath Ring, Charlie, Lux, and Octavia all do battle against the Divine, and with Lux's help, manage to discover her tragic origins. Despite their attempts to appeal to her, the Divine's sadness transforms into anger as she sees her current actions as the culmination of a life marked by suffering, believing it's too late to turn back due to all the pain she's caused. Rejecting their attempts to save her, the Divine launches a ferocious assault on Charlie, Octavia, and Lux, unleashing hellfire and completing the ritual to summon Satan, opening the portal to Purgatory. In a shocking twist, the portal leads to Roo's own dimension, which begins to unravel and reveal Roo had been imprisoned in Purgatory all along—having used her reality-warping powers to create an illusion to deceive Charlie. The Root of Evil grinned sinisterly at Charlie, who urgently screamed at Lux to escape. However, the Root of all Evil shifted her arm into a long root and seized Lux through the portal, dragging them towards her as Lux struggled to break free, trembling in sheer terror and desperately trying to flashbang the Root of Evil or use their light powers to escape Evil's clutches. In a gruesome act, the Root of Evil sadistically impaled Lux with her roots, draining them of all their power and ultimately killing them, with Lux painfully dissolving into nothingness. Charlie, witnessing this horrifying loss, is overcome with devastation, falling to her knees and sobbing into her hands.
After absorbing Satan's essence as well, Roo emerged from the portal, deceitfully expressing gratitude to the Divine for her supposed support. The Divine, deluded, offered all her love to the Root of Evil. The Root of Evil cunningly played along, agreeing to the Divine's words. The Root of all Evil extended her eldritch, root-like tongue, using it to ruthlessly impale the Divine through the face, draining her powers and taking her life. The Root of Evil then proceeded to do the same to the entirety of the Chosen, transforming her fingers into long roots before using them to impale and painfully drain all of its members at once while cackling maniacally, all while those around her were left in utter shock and horror.
Chuckling sadistically and empowered by all of her disposable allies, the Root of Evil confessed to Charlie that while she enjoyed having minions, she preferred them to be under her absolute control, snapping her fingers and summoning thousands of Garbage Men from the ground below. Charlie, fueled by rage and sorrow, transformed into her Full Demon Form and fiercely attacked the Root of Evil for deceiving her and for the deaths of Lux and Vaggie. The Root of Evil endured Charlie's fiery onslaught and blows effortlessly, all while mocking the exhausted princess. As the battle raged on and Evil fed off of Charlie's anger, each of Charlie's enraged blows gradually transformed "Roo" into her true form as the Root of Evil, the source of all misery and pain in Creation. Mocking Charlie, the Root of Evil reveled in the princess's murderous rage, a terrifying embodiment of evil facing off against a symbol of hope now corrupted.
As the portal to Purgatory began closing, the Root of Evil arrogantly and coyly presented a sadistic choice to Charlie, continue attacking her and damn Charlie's Angels to being imprisoned in Purgatory once again, or save them and allow her to annihilate Hell. Realizing the futility in attacking the manifestation of Evil, Charlie furiously roared and made a quick decision and flew into the portal to Purgatory, rescuing Charlie's Angels just in time before the portal sealed shut. Meanwhile, the Root of Evil excitedly announced her return to Hell itself and used her eldritch claws to tear a hole in reality, plunging into it and traveling to the Pride Ring. Taking her tree-like form, the Root of Evil destroyed the clock tower and planted herself in the heart of Pentagram City where it once stood, and commenced enveloping Hell in her malevolent roots, leaving a wake of destruction as she extended her reach to the other rings as her roots tore the lands asunder, overwhelming everything and everyone in the roots' path.
With Hell looking like a giant thorn bush and the seven rings tethered together by Evil's massive roots, Roo, cackling manically, tore more holes in reality, summoning cascades of trash and conjuring her minions to sow terror throughout Hell. The very fabric of the demonic realm trembled under the onslaught, as the Root of All Evil's roots began draining Hell itself of its vitality, the Root of Evil herself embarked on her sinister mission to bring chaos and suffering to all corners of Hell.
The Root of Evil shifted her focus to Charlie and her allies, who were frozen in horror. Remembering Stolas' dying words, Blitzø retrieved the Asmodean Crystal that the Goetia ex-prince bestowed to him, and used it to trace a portal to Earth, urging everyone to escape Hell before it was too late. Faced with no other option, the hotel crew and I.M.P sprinted through the portal, though Charlie had to be pulled by Manco and Angel Dust.
The portal closed just as the Root of Evil's roots were about to reach them. The team found themselves stranded on Earth, their faces reflecting devastation as they watched the portal to Hell seal shut. Realizing they were now trapped on Earth while Hell faced annihilation, a sense of helplessness and grief engulfed them. Charlie, in particular, fell to the ground, completely defeated, and tears streamed down her face as she grappled with the immense tragedy she had unwittingly brought to life.
Personality
As the manifestation of Evil and creator of Sin, the Root of All Evil is completely and unapologetically evil, ruthless, sadistic, and disloyal; a card-carrying monster who benefits and thrives off of the suffering of others. While many called "villains" are evil out of lust for power, vengeance, or a tragic backstory, the Root of Evil is malevolent simply for the love of the game. Above all, the Root of Evil is extremely prideful; She revels in being the embodiment of evil, taking full responsibility for the pain, negativity, and destruction in Earth and Creation. Almost all her interactions are laced with mockery and disdain, and she shows no remorse or empathy, instead finding joy in the misery and degradation of humanity and her enemies. Evil is also a deceitful, patient chessmaster, playing both Heaven and Hell effortlessly, benefiting from the perpetual disharmony between the spiritual realms.
Despite her eldritch nature and being utterly inhuman in terms of morals, the Root of Evil has some eerily human traits to her; While pure evil, she has an oddly fun and infectiously flamboyant personality with a lot of sass, pride, and villainous flair, figuring she may as well have the time of her infinite life and revel in the "fun" of villainy. She is also not compulsively driven to harm others, as she is capable of biding her time and acting in a charismatic, almost friendly, cheeky, and mischievous tone when engaging with others. The Root of Evil has a dark, dry and mocking sense of humor, such as struggling not to burst out laughing while claiming to be serious, or "comforting" Charlie by telling her that Vaggie was no longer in pain, since her soul ceased to exist after Evil killed her.
The Root of Evil is boundlessly cruel, as shown when she created Lilith to take over Eve's vessel, trapping the first woman in the deepest parts of her own mind, driving her to insanity and depriving her of the social interactions that humans require. Shortly after Hell's creation, Evil cursed Lilith, causing all of her and Lucifer's newborn children to be stillborn, before allowing Charlie to live only to use her as a bargaining chip, threatening to have the princess meet the same fate as her stillborn siblings unless Lilith used her concerts to inspire Hell's denizens to rebel against Heaven. She later displayed her sadism when she taunted Charlie over Vaggie and Lux's deaths, rubbing it in the princesses' face and cracking jokes about Vaggie dying, before making Charlie watch as she began destroying Hell itself. Notably, as the Root of Evil, she is more straightforwardly terrifying and cruel, less prone to joking around than when she is manipulating others.
Deeply methodical, malign and baleful, she can be a charming, flamboyant, and charismatic spirit capable of effortlessly swaying people under her whim, whether it be putting on a likable and casually charming mask, or exploiting the psychological weaknesses, tragedies, and insecurities of others. She loves messing with people and starting trouble, and is three steps ahead of everybody, switching between menacingly evil and charmingly goofy and darkly exuberant on a whim. She is a hyperintelligent mastermind, chessmaster and a classic hammy villain who can act as a rebellious, chaotic, dorky, and fun-loving friend. As shown when she manipulated Charlie, the Root of Evil is not above performing acts of good, acting in accordance with people's wishes, and playing both sides, just as long as it brings her closer to accomplishing her goals.
She is extremely manipulative, previously exploiting Eve's childlike innocence and curiosity, enticing her to consume the Forbidden Fruit and cruelly gaslighting the first woman into believing it was all her fault, even though Root of Evil blatantly goaded her into consuming it. Later on, the Root of Evil cunningly manipulated Charlie into unleashing her on Hell, skillfully appealing to the princess's compassion, unwavering desire to assist others, and commitment to never breaking promises. The Root of Evil only revealed bits and pieces of her true self to Vaggie and Manco when Charlie's back was turned. Additionally, it is clear through is pupeteering of Satan that Evil relishes in spreading corruption and destroying moral foundations. She exploits others' darkest emotions, mainly guilt and fear, and finds amusement in watching people destroy themselves or their relationships at her command and temptation.
Evil is also highly controlling and potentially paranoid. When Lilith and Lucifer established Hell, Evil perceived this as a direct challenge to her authority and control over sinners. Feeling threatened, she retaliated with the Magne family curse, coercing Lilith into using her concerts to spread evil and sin. Evil's ultimatum was clear: comply, or Charlie would also be killed, thereby asserting her dominance over the King and Queen of Hell, despite them clearly having no intention of usurping her control over the souls of sinners.
The Root of Evil is a misanthrope who genuinely despises humanity and deeply enjoys terrorizing the human race, having meddled in their lives since their creation. She is the reason why humans can die, hurt, and sin in the first place, wearing their misery and hardships like a badge of honor. She regards the human race as lower than trash, and claims there are only two good things about humans; their wrongdoings, and the things they make, use, and eventually throw away for her to collect.
The Root of Evil displays deceit, a lack of loyalty, and treachery even towards her own followers, killing the Divine and mercilessly slaughtering the entirety of the Chosen - even though the Chosen had been nothing but loyal to her and had assisted in her escape from Purgatory - all while laughing hysterically about it. The Root of Evil has admitted that while she enjoys having others serve her, she prefers absolute control over her minions to prevent any potential betrayals. Indeed, the Root of Evil summoned the Sludgelings and Garbage Men to aid her in terrorizing Hell, beings entirely under her design and devoid of free will. Generally, the Root of Evil harbors a strong aversion to relying on minions, especially ones with agency and independent wills. She prefers to personally cause misery and execute her sinister deeds, disdaining the use of others as proxies. She only employs henchmen when absolutely necessary, seeing no fun in having others do her dirty work when she could do it herself and relish destruction and people's anguish up close and personal.
While manipulating Charlie, the Root of Evil acted as "Roo"; an inept, cosmic loner, outcast and bogan with an extremely weird demeanor and speech pattern with the tendency to repeat herself. She feigned having extremely poor social skills, posture, with the tendency to say or do things that unsettle others, pretending as if she did not know better. As Roo, she acted vulnerable, craving freedom and being accepted by others, while also scared of being ridiculed by society again. During her first encounter with Charlie, she seemingly became very dependent on and attached to the princess when Charlie promised to free her and show her the ways of the Universe.
As "Roo", the Root of Evil had a habit of hiding her pernicious ways under the guise of "helping" and befriending others. Shortly after meeting Charlie, she used her powers to alter Charlie's appearance into a more aggressive-looking appearance, making the princess look rather unscrupulous (the way Roo wants her to be) and telling Charlie that she looked confident and mature when the princess expressed her gripes about the new look. Additionally, not only did she force Manco to fight and kill several Sludgelings (even using her roots to bring him directly in front of them when he was standing on the sidelines), but she also excitedly egged him on as he did so and told him that killing things would get easier the more he did it, hardly paying attention to the face that killing the Sludgelings clearly traumatized him.
Appearance
Humanoid
In her humanoid forms, Evil appears as a humanoid spirit with pallid skin and long, inky-black hair, which transitions into a fiery red gradient as it flows towards the tips. Her hair moves as if composed of fire. Her eyes, with their vivid crimson sclera and luminescent white irises, emit an eerie glow in the presence of darkness, lending her a menacing countenance. Burgundy eyeshadow adorns her eyelids, further enhancing her striking appearance. Adding to her eerie allure, her bears conspicuous, pulsating veins along her neck, their obsidian tendrils imbued with a sinister scarlet luminescence. Her arms and neck appear bound and ensnared, evoking a sense of captivity and confinement. However, perhaps the most distinctive feature of her form is her extraordinarily long and eldritch "tongue," which is, in reality, one of her signature roots. She has razor-sharp teeth with hints of dried blood surrounding her mouth, while streaks of dirt and grime mar her limbs and legs. Roo can also spawn like this weird, big masturbating arm that is completely black with elongated claws and red lines throughout the wrist, palm, and finger.
Evil's attire in her form used to lure Charlie includes a prominent, oversized black fedora adorned with a weeping skull motif on its crown. She compliments this with a tattered, sleeveless red shirt, worn over an undershirt featuring a checkered pattern. Her ensemble extends to black short shorts adorned with chains fashioned to resemble suspenders, and her footwear of choice is a pair of sturdy black boots.
In her primary form, Evil wears a large fedora, which features a black brim with a white band and a checkered underside. Her wardrobe is further accentuated by a striking red trench coat, worn openly, and an undershirt bearing the same checkered design. She wears black trousers and thigh-length, stiletto boots with black roots coiled around the heel.
Her signature roots, which manifest as black, white, or red in color, are distinguished by their razor-sharp thorns running along their length and multiple enigmatic eyes. A pulsating red glow courses through these roots, adding to their otherworldly allure.
Root of Evil
The Root of Evil's true form is that of a tree-like, eldritch entity composed entirely of shadow or black fire, with hair-like black flames and a prominent bright red burn mark at the center of her forehead. Her eyes possess a haunting, whitish-red sclera. In this form, her lower body takes on the form of jagged, root-like appendages, emphasizing her resemblance to the Tree of Knowledge.

It appeared as if the new clothing had been layered over the existing outfit, the result of Roo's formidable power.
- Corruption Inducement: Roo's ability to instigate corruption in various forms knows no bounds, and her creativity in twisting the essence of entities is boundless. Her malevolent influence extends from distorting the very shapes of creatures to infusing their minds with forbidden knowledge. One of her most infamous feats was the corrupting role she played in the fall of Adam and Eve, stripping them of their humanity and immortality through the consumption of the Forbidden Fruit. This fateful event, set in motion by Roo's poison, cast humanity into a state of inherent sinfulness, subjecting them to the harrowing ordeals of suffering and mortality, experiences never intended for mortal beings. She is also responsible for the corruption of Satan, twisting it's perception of life and forcefully exposing it to evil.
- Creation: Roo wields the astonishing ability to conjure objects or sentient beings of her choosing into existence with a simple snap of her fingers, causing the desired item to materialize in a cloud of ominous black smoke. In a dramatic display of her power, she summoned a full-sized demonic horse from just a handful of sludge during a confrontation with the Sludgelings and the hotel crew. Furthermore, Roo can fabricate a veritable tornado of trash, enabling her to teleport to designated destinations at will. Her command over this magical vortex allows her to traverse great distances in the blink of an eye. - Death Inducement: Roo possesses the power to bring about the death of other beings, be it through immediate or gradual means, often by placing curses upon them. In fact, it was Roo's intervention that contributed to the mortality of humans, as she utilized the Forbidden Fruit to deprive Adam, Eve, and their offspring of their immortal status. Later, she cursed Lucifer and Lilith's children so that they would die upon their birth, though she allowed Charlie to live as a bargaining chip.
- Dimensional Shifting: Upon reaching the threshold of 50% of her power, Roo acquired a measure of control over her prison dimension. In a dramatic demonstration of her newfound capabilities, she began to create rifts in the fabric of reality itself. These rifts acted as conduits, enabling a torrent of trash from across the multiverse to pour into her domain.
- Duplication: Roo possesses the intriguing capability to generate multiple identical copies of herself. Notably, these duplicates, though under her control, exhibit the fascinating trait of acting autonomously, each harboring its own unique personality.
- Eldritch Claw Generation: Roo possesses the ability to summon claws made from red and black lightning or possibly dark energy. With these formidable claws at her disposal, she can effortlessly cut through virtually any obstacle and even manipulate the fabric of reality, granting her access to alternate dimensions.
- Emotional Vampirism: Roo possesses the innate ability to nourish herself by consuming negative emotions, harnessing them to amplify her already formidable powers. In the heat of battle, her strength burgeons in direct correlation with the intensity of her adversaries' malevolence, sorrow, desire for revenge, and seething rage. This unique ability grants her an increasingly potent advantage as her opponents' negative emotions surge, making her a formidable force to reckon with in confrontations steeped in bitterness and turmoil.
- Energy Shield Generation: After restoring the hotel, Roo placed an invisible, red magical bubble over the hotel to protect it from intruders. This shield proved to be so powerful that, during Extermination Day, it dissolved the head of Azrael's seemingly indestructible archangelic guitar, further highlighting the extent of Roo's eldritch power.
- Evil Embodiment: The Root of Evil is an omnimalevolent being powered and filled by all that is evil in the Universe, and can manipulate all that is evil, including evil forces, to her whim.
- Fragokinesis: Roo possesses the extraordinary capability to induce explosive turmoil in her environment. By driving her colossal roots deep into the ground or any surface, she can harness the dark energy within the roots and infuse the area with volatile energy, triggering a cataclysmic explosion. This surging energy causes the affected surface to rupture violently, erupting into a devastating explosion of force and chaos.
- Garbage Manipulation: Roo possesses an unparalleled mastery over the creation, sculpting, and control of garbage. Her command over refuse extends to the creation of mystical trash tornadoes, which serve as conduits for teleportation, summoning trash can lids to glide down towering heaps of refuse, and harnessing garbage as formidable offensive projectiles. Additionally, Roo can employ trash to erect defensive barriers, fashioning sturdy shields or impervious domes comprised of solid objects, thereby fortifying her defenses. Her uncanny affinity for manipulating refuse is a testament to her versatile and unique powers.
- Indomitable Villainy: Roo's most chilling attribute lies in her unapologetic embrace of malevolence and her steadfast dedication to perpetuating evil. She exhibits a complete readiness to inflict misery and suffering upon even those innocent individuals who have never wronged her. Her villainous pursuits encompass corrupting entire races, extinguishing hope, propagating sin, and instilling despair, all while demonstrating an unflinching willingness to go to any lengths to spread carnage.
- Invisibility: Roo can dissolve into a cloak of black mist and vanish, rendering herself invisible to the naked eye. Nevertheless, should she move with excessive speed in this concealed state, faint trails of the dark mist become visible, offering her opponents a glimpse of her whereabouts.
- Life Manipulation: Roo can bring inanimate objects to life or produce living creatures, forcing them to carry out her biddings.
- Mind Reading: One of Roo's signature powers, she can see into the minds of others, allowing her to see their deepest memories and thoughts, even memories that her victims may have forgotten or suppressed. She was able to read Charlie's mind, without even looking directly at her, so that she could assume the form of the princesses' forgotten, imaginary, childhood friend. She was also seemingly able to know intricate details about Manco's time in Purgatory by subtly reading into the child's mind. Roo later read Vaggie's mind when the sinner confronted her, allowing her to know all about her history with the Exterminators. During her one-sided fight with Charlie, Roo taunted Charlie in the princesses' murderous fury by saying that she could see Charlie's thoughts of wanting to brutally kill and torture Roo as retribution for what she did to Vaggie and Lux.
- Omnifarious: Roo possesses the ability to shapeshift into a multitude of different forms and sizes. Among many things she can instantly take the form of whatever is more comforting to her targets as a way to seduce them and gain their trust. Her shapeshifting allows her to appear smaller or taller than she actually is, and also allows her to engulf entire surfaces such as the ground and walls around her, allowing her to engulf, overwhelm, and intimidate other people. She can make her right arm larger, with dark red markings and longer, black fingers.
- Omnimalevolence: As the Root of Evil, Roo is infinitely malevolent and is the very reason why humans can commit sin and depravity. She is capable of mass-influencing other beings into being evil, and is completely immoral and highly manipulative. However, she is still capable of "kindness" and is a master of deceiving others into thinking she is benevolent.
- Portal Creation: Roo can conjure red portals that she can use to either travel to a location of her choosing, or produce and project an endless barrage of garbage at her targets at a harmful speed. She can even create portals that lead outside of her prison dimension for others to travel out of, though she is incapable of leaving her dimension through them.
- Power Nullification: Using the Forbidden Fruit, Roo negated the Tree of Life's ability to bestow immortality, leading Adam and Eve to forfeit their eternal life despite being in the Tree of Life's immediate vicinity.
- Pyrokinesis: Roo can manipulate and produce magical fire, this includes conjuring lava, creating fire beams and projectiles, and imbuing fire into her surroundings. She appears to be partially made of fire herself, with her hair moving as if it were composed of flames.
- Reality Sundering: Roo possesses the uncanny ability to employ her eldritch claws as instruments to rend holes in the very fabric of reality. This exceptional power allows her to pry open rifts leading to alternate universes. Astonishingly, she demonstrated this capability after unlocking a mere 50% of her potential, using it to beckon trash from various corners of Creation itself into her prison dimension.
- Reality Warping: Roo has demonstrated incredibly potent reality warping abilities, allowing her to alter reality to how she sees fit. She can create sentient creatures from basically nothing, and was able to completely restore the Hazbin Hotel down to the last minute details, without having even been in the hotel to begin with. When Vaggie confronted Roo about her true motives, Roo conjured dozens upon dozens of magical mirror images depicting the atrocities committed by the Exterminators, making the images surround Vaggie to a suffocating degree. Roo's most impressive reality-bending feat was here, in a weakened state, transforming Purgatory itself to look like a dimension made of trash simply so Charlie and the Hazbin gang would not be suspicious of her.
- Root Manipulation: Roo's paramount and most formidable ability, from which her very name originates, lies in her capacity to generate an inexhaustible multitude of magical, tree-like roots. These roots are living extensions of herself and she can manifest them from virtually any source, including the ground, thin air, portals, or various parts of her own body, notably her tongue, fingers, and, in her true form, below her neck. These roots exhibit an astonishing array of shapes and sizes. One of the most chilling applications of this power involves these roots piercing or ensnaring living beings, drawing their life force from them and transferring it to Roo, thereby empowering her. Roo can even transmute her own limbs into jagged roots, employing them for grievous mutilation or impalement of her adversaries. Roo exhibits the additional ability to use her roots to overcharge surfaces or even people with dark energy, driving the roots into the ground to inflict substantial damage on anything ensnared by the assault and anchoring the roots to the arena floor. Subsequently, waves of red and black energy radiate outward from the embedded root, traversing the ground as Roo intensifies her concentration on imbuing dark energy into the surface. Shortly thereafter, the surroundings erupt into a massive supernova of red lightning and dark energy. In her true form, Roo transcends any limitations, embedding herself within the very fabric of a world's surface, akin to a colossal tree. Through this connection, she deploys her roots to drain entire worlds of their vitality, generating a multitude of roots that can number into the millions simultaneously. In addition to their life-draining capabilities, Roo's roots can be molded into thick, impenetrable barriers, serving as potent defensive shields. Furthermore, she can project lethal beams of dark energy from the tips of her roots, unleashing devastating attacks from multiple angles. These roots exhibit exceptional resilience, with even blessed weapons failing to penetrate their defenses. An illustrative instance is when Vaggie's spear proved ineffective, rebounding harmlessly off Roo's roots as she summoned one to deflect the attack. Roo's incredible might became unequivocally apparent when she employed her roots to effortlessly subdue and vanquish an Ophanim angel, a being that had previously defeated Charlie and Vaggie with minimal effort. Upon being freed from her prison and empowered by the Divine, Lux and Satan, Roo uses her roots the cover the entirety of Hell's planet-sized seven rings, with her roots tethering the rings together to better drain Hell and its denizens of their vitality. The limitless quantity of roots at her disposal allows Roo to rend the very earth asunder and assail her adversaries relentlessly, leaving them utterly overwhelmed and helpless in the face of her devastating onslaught.
- Scrying: Roo maintains a symbiotic link with her roots, allowing her to perceive the world through the myriad eyes embedded within her extensive network of roots, numbering in the hundreds, if not thousands. Roo is also capable of seeing through all of the red eyes scattered throughout the Pride Ring, as well as through Twanas made in the image of her eyes.
- Size Manipulation: In her true form, Roo can manipulate the size of her form to a seemingly limitless degree.
- Sludge Manipulation: Roo possesses the unsettling ability to generate sludge, a thick and noxious substance typically found in landfills and sewers. She often employs this vile material as a weapon, using it offensively to momentarily blind her adversaries by hurling it into their eyes, thereby gaining a tactical advantage in confrontations.
- Summoning: Roo can produce and summon an army of up to thousands of maggots to aid her in her endeavors.
- Telekinesis: Roo can move multiple objects at once magically, as shown when she was showing off her trash collection to Charlie's Angels, suspending hundreds of objects above the children at once.
- Teleportation: Roo can teleport herself or others instantly by summoning a tornado of trash around herself and/or her targets, allowing them to disappear or reappear in a different location from the tornado.
- Transmutation: Roo can change the physical forms of people in any big or small way she desires, which was shown when she changed Charlie's eye color from black to bright red. She also turned water into blood with a tap of her finger while enjoying drinks with Alastor, Charlie, and Mimzy.
- Typhokinesis: Roo can produce black smoke for various purposes, mostly to create smokescreens.
- Abstract Existence: Roo is the embodiment of all that is evil and malevolent, as such she can never truly be vanquished and will continue to exist as long as evil is a concept.
Abilities
- Authority: As a Pillar of Creation, Roo has ultimate powers over nearly all of Creation.
- Charisma: Leveraging her affable and laid-back charm or exploiting the vulnerabilities and frailties of the psyche, Roo is easily capable of feigning kindness and deceiving her targets into believing she is harmless, effortlessly duping them into helping her advance her goals.
- Manipulation: The Root of Evil is a consummate manipulator, utilizing her guile and charm to gain the trust of others effortlessly and use them in her favor.
- Musical Talents: Roo is a surprisingly talented singer and dancer, as shown in her duet with Charlie.
- Natural Weaponry: Roo's right arm has elongated, very sharp claws which she can use as weapons.
- Violin Playing: Roo can play the violin with phenomenal talent.
Weaknesses
- Destruction of Sinners: So far, the sole method discovered to harm the Root of Evil is by annihilating the souls of the sinners she depends on for sustenance and power. When a sinner's soul is obliterated, it deprives Evil of her ability to draw from them, resulting in intense physical agony for her.
Relationships
Others
Charlie Magne
Roo and Charlie first met when the princess was lamenting her loss of the Hazbin Hotel, to which Roo complimented her singing as the princess was sobbing outside of the Pentagram City Clock Tower. After an awkward introduction, Roo invited Charlie inside of her prison dimension and acted friendly and hospitable, despite the princesses' negative comments on her trash collection. During their conversation, Roo offered to use her abilities to rebuild the hotel - on the condition that Charlie help her escape the dimension. Recognizing a chance for freedom from her confinement, Roo began subtly manipulating Charlie, proposing to utilize her powers to reconstruct the hotel, contingent on Charlie assisting in her escape from the dimension. She fabricated a tragic backstory to exploit Charlie's empathetic nature and shared her false feelings of loneliness, stemming from people's fear of her appearance. Charlie pledged to aid Roo in her escape and even offered to help her explore the Universe and make new friendships.
Remaining surprisingly faithful to her promise, Roo actively aided Charlie in the reconstruction of the Hazbin Hotel, going above and beyond by fortifying it with a potent energy shield to ward off potential intruders. However, as their venture progressed, cracks in Roo's facade began to show, especially when Charlie disclosed her engagement to Vaggie. Roo's demeanor shifted, urging Charlie to sever ties with Vaggie and striving to isolate her from her supportive circle of friends. When Charlie remained resolute in her love and commitment to Vaggie, Roo resorted to a devious plan begin Charlie's back, dispatching Satan to kill Vaggie, punishing Charlie for her loyalty and to remove her sense of heroism by taking away her north star.
Upon her liberation, Roo shed her benign facade and revealed her malevolent nature to Charlie. Gleefully, she taunted and ridiculed Charlie, boasting about how effortlessly she had manipulated her with a simple "sob story." Intriguingly, Roo refrained from physically harming Charlie after her release even as the princess furiously attacked her, choosing instead to inflict psychological torment. She forced Charlie to witness the destruction of her cherished home, relishing in her anguish.
Lilith
Lilith is one of Roo's creations, created to replace Eve after she ate the Forbidden Fruit. Due to their connection, Lilith is bound to the Root of All Evil, and despite Lilith's attempts to instill hope and light into the darkness of Hell through her music, Evil saw this as a threat to its dominion and control.
Evil cursed Lilith, ensuring that her children with Lucifer would be born lifeless, demonstrates both its vindictiveness and its desire to maintain control over Lilith's actions and emotions. However, Evil allowed Charlie to live, visiting Lilith on the night of her birth to reveal the nature of the curse it inflicted on the demon queen. By threatening to have Charlie join her siblings in death, Evil forced Lilith to abandon her efforts to inspire hope and instead use her music to spread chaos and malevolence to fuel the Root of All Evil's power. Despite Lilith's reluctance, she ultimately agreed to Evil's demands to protect Charlie, transforming Hell into a realm of darkness and suffering through her music.
Eve
- "You earned your place here! Your sin is unforgivable, luv! This is the place for worthless, useless trash like you! You think your holy lil' friends will ever forgive you?! You're MINE, shelia, and you'll never see the light of day again!"
- — Roo terrorizing Eve in Lilith's subconscious.
The Root of Evil tempted Eve in the Garden of Eden with eating the Forbidden Fruit, initially presenting herself as friendly, preying on Eve's curiosity. Evil undermined Eve's trust in Adam and their life in Eden, enticing her with promises of freedom and knowledge if she ate from the tree. She played on Eve's curiosity and desire for autonomy, urging the first woman to defy the rules and choose her own path. Despite Eve's initial hesitation, Evil persistently tempted her with the allure of liberation from Adam's "control" and the opportunity to gain insight into the world beyond Eden.
Evil's temptation worked, as Eve ate from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, allowing Evil to finally reach Earth. Despite Eve enabling her, the Root of All Evil implanted an inner demon in Eve's head that overtook her body, trapping Eve in her own mind.
After Eve's own inner imprisonment, Evil revealed her true self to Eve, taking on a sadistic and manipulative disposition. She takes pleasure in tormenting Eve, finding amusement in her suffering and exploiting her vulnerabilities. Evil taunted Eve with her past choice of consuming the Forbidden Fruit, reveling in her pain and the fact that Eve had the free will to simply say "no".
Their dynamic is one of tormentor and tormented, with the Root of All Evil holding the upper hand through her manipulation and psychological warfare. Eve, despite her moments of defiance, ultimately succumbs to the Root's influence, trapped in a cycle of suffering and manipulation.
Alastor
The true depth of Evil's relationship with Alastor remains unknown. When Charlie introduced Alastor to Roo's dimension, the pair quickly formed a bond over their dark senses of humor. Roo extended her filthy hands for a handshake with Alastor, which the Radio Demon reluctantly reciprocated after a subtle eye squint from Roo. Their interactions hinted at an underlying dynamic beyond what they were willing to reveal to Charlie.
With the revelation that Satan was merely a puppet of Roo's influence, it suggests that Alastor's demonic abilities stemmed from Roo. In a conversation with Eve, Roo referred to Alastor as one of her "best mates" and hinted at unfinished business between them.
Manco
While in her ruse Roo seemed very interested in Manco, expressing her eagerness to meet the young saint upon their first interaction and making herself out as an aunt figure to him. Roo ended up intentionally unsettling Manco by asking him about his experience in Purgatory, though she feigned innocence under the pretense of having poor social skills, and was assured by Charlie that Manco would forgive her. Later, when Giulia was attacked by the Sludgelings, Roo, despite Charlie wanting him to stay out of the fight, encouraged Manco to attack and kill several Sludgelings, cheering him on as he used his powers to kill several of them. When Manco was clearly distraught at killing the Sludgelings, Roo comforted him by telling him that killing things would get easier the more he did it and told Manco that they were a team, and that she would help him accomplish great things.
Later, when Charlie left Manco and the rest of Charlie's Angels under Roo's supervision to face the Divine and Satan, Roo reassured Manco when he expressed his concern about Charlie's ability to handle the situation. Drawing on his past experiences with Satan and how he survived the Devil, Roo appeared to comfort him. However, their interaction takes a darker turn as Roo delves into Manco's traumatic past, which seems to unsettle him deeply. She confronted Manco about his past trauma, revealing that she was the one responsible for his suffering. Despite Manco's pleas for her to stop, Roo continued to assert her involvement, reveling in her hand in his suffering.
When Evil murdered Lux in front of Manco, the young saint appeared was deeply horrified. The Root then left Manco and the others behind in Purgatory, using them as a distraction for Charlie, goading the princess into saving them before they were trapped in Purgatory again, giving the Root of Evil the opportunity to travel to the other rings of Hell and orchestrate complete chaos.
Enemies
Vaggie
Roo and Vaggie share a mutual dislike for each other for their own reasons; Vaggie was very skeptical and untrusting of Roo, and viewed the spirit as an incredibly sketchy figure, refusing to let her get close to Charlie, and attempting to investigate Roo's background to discover her motives. Roo disliked Vaggie because she tried to keep Charlie away from her, and out of her "belief" that Vaggie wanted to keep Charlie to herself. Roo often tried to make Charlie's Angels and Charlie herself think negatively of Vaggie, calling the sinner "mad as a cut snake" and "completely off her rocker".
During Vaggie and Roo's intense confrontation, Roo attempted to gaslight Vaggie into believing that she is possessive of Charlie and holds the princess back, playing into Vaggie's psychological fears by telling her that she knows that Charlie will abandon her if she fully succeeds in her goals. Roo also mercilessly taunted Vaggie over her past career as an Exterminator and took sadistic joy in making the former saint relive her trauma. Roo then rubbed it in Vaggie's face that Charlie was slipping away from her and was now loyal to Roo, before bluntly dismissing the sinner from her prison dimension.
Although Roo made several attempts to drive a wedge between Charlie and Vaggie and tarnish Vaggie's reputation, Charlie stood steadfast in her loyalty to Vaggie. When Charlie informed Roo about her impending engagement with Vaggie, Roo grew furious and demanded that Charlie cancel the wedding, claiming that Vaggie intended to keep Roo imprisoned. Despite Roo's impassioned pleas, Charlie chose to remain by Vaggie's side. Recognizing that removing Vaggie from the equation would allow her to manipulate Charlie more easily, and weary of Vaggie and the sinner's interference in her plans, Roo orchestrated Vaggie's demise through Satan to eliminate her from the picture.

Chapter 5
- "Roo: (voice coming from the clock tower) What a lovely set a' pipes you 'ave!
Charlie: (she jumps up, startled, wiping tears from her eyes) Who... Who said that?
Roo: Me! I'm in 'ere!
Charlie: (she faces the clock tower's mural) Where are you, uh, coming from...?
Roo: I've been trapped in this fuckin' place fer... Well, I don't know. But then, I heard the most beautiful singing and I just hadda listen in. It was you! Singing about yer hotel, and then I heard ya sobbin' and just thought a complement would make ya feel betta.
Charlie: Oh... Thanks? Soooo, uh, how'dya even get in there?
Roo: Well, y'see, not a lodda people like me. People can be right fuckin' cruel. With the way they talk about me, you'd think I'm a scarier sight than an old couple bumpin' uglies in the rain on a cold day. (cackles) So, they put me in this place and thought it was best to forget about me.
Charlie: Al...Righty then? So, you're saying this clock tower is a portal to another realm? This whole time. This clock tower that has been here for literally thousands of years?
Roo: Yep! Yep, it is!
Charlie: (with a dumbfounded look) Say what now?
Roo: (titters) Allll along! And you had no fuckin' clue! Ain't that fuckin' somethin'?! Yeah, sometimes I'll try to strike up a chat with wayward blokes, but yer people can be, well, quite shitty sometimes.
Charlie: Tell me about it...
Roo: Speakin' of which... Do you wanna be muh mate?! I've always wanted real mates!
Charlie: (laughs; whispering) Shit, it's not every day you hear that in Hell. (normally) Of course, I'll be your friend!
Roo: Coo-ee!! Now that we're mates, I'll be apples if you joined me in 'ere! No worries, you won't be trapped, and I got all sortsa treasures in 'ere!" - — Roo and Charlie meet each other.
- "Charlie: H- Hello? Eugh... It really does stinks in here...
Roo: Oi, c*nt! I take offense to that!
Charlie: (startled, she looks at a heaping pile of trash, noticing someone rummaging around inside) Hello? A- Are you the one who summoned me?
Roo: Oh! Oh, g'day, mate! Wait a tick, I'm searchin' fer a fork I lost in '45. 1745. (giggles) Eh, what's up, c*nt?
Charlie: Uhhh... You... Summoned me?
Roo: Oh, yeah! Sorry, I 'aven't seen anotha bloke in just about a million fuckin' years!
Charlie: You've been here that long?
Roo: Yep! Just been me and me clones? Right, me?
Roo #2: GET FUCKIN' STUFFED, c*nt! I'M TRYIN'A GET SOME BLOODY FUCKIN' SLEEP!
Roo: (to Charlie) Ignore 'er.
Charlie: Okaaay.... Sooo... (clears throat) Aaaanyhow, my name is Charlie! Charlie Magne! (she holds Razzle and Dazzle up) These are my bois, Razzle and Dazzle! And you are...?
Roo: Charlie?! Boy, have I been waitin' fer you, c*nt! Name's Roo! Short fer, uh... Somethin' or otha.
Charlie: Well, it's a pleasure to meet you, Roo! And, uh, I understand if you don't want to, but could you, maybe, show yourself to me? It would be fantastic to actually see you!
Roo: Oh. (chuckles) Roight. Well, thing is, I'm tryin' to find a form yer most comfor'ble with.
Charlie: Really? That's... Thoughtful of you! Take all the time you need, then!
Roo: Will do! Let's see... No, no, too saccharine... Ah-ha! I think I found just tha perfect form! (she leaps out of the heap of trash, using a trash can lid to surf her way down the trash heap) YAAAA-HOOO!!! (she lands in front of Charlie in her demonic form) Ya fuckin' like it?
Charlie: Hold on... You look just like...
Roo: Ya childhood imaginary friend?! Betcha you forgot 'bout that one, eh, c*nt Hadda fuckin' reach in the deeeeeeepest part of ya memories fer that fuckin' one. (she extends her hand) Nice to fuckin' meetcha in person, mate! (her eldritch tongue suddenly jolts out of her mouth, nearly lurching onto Charlie; Razzle and Dazzle growl) Crikey! ...Get tha fuck back in there, ya fuckin' lil' drongo. (she shoves her tongue back in her mouth) Ooh, fuck! (she laughs nervously) Sorry 'bout that dunnie bungy, mates. Just one of muh roots!
Charlie: (startled) Uuuuuhhh... I don't remember my imaginary friend doing that...
Roo: (hurriedly) Eh, probably a fuckin' repressed memory or some shit, I dun' fuckin' know. (she extends her hand again) C'moooon, c*nt, I don't bite!
Charlie: (to Razzle and Dazzle) It's okay, boys... (she turns to Roo and slowly shakes her hand)
Roo: Oh... (she looks at their hands) That's... That's different.
Charlie: Pardon...? (after a pause, Roo suddenly hugs Charlie tightly) Woah! (she slowly reciprocates as Roo begins sobbing softly) You okay, Roo...?
Roo: Ah. (she wipes her eyes, sniffling) Fuck me... Sorry, 'bout the bawls, love. Just been so fuckin' long since I've had anotha c*nt in me life. (Charlie darts her eyes awkwardly) Term of endearment, love.
Charlie: Oh! Right. I'm, uh... I'm so sorry this happened to you, Roo. Someone like you shouldn't have to live in a place like this, with all this garbage.
Roo: Actually, this 'ere dinkum is me garbage!
Charlie: Wait, seriously?
Roo: Aaah, yes! It's me own personal collection! I see the beauty in many disgusting things. One person's trash is ME bloomin' treasure. (she pulls out a sculpture of a snowman made of garbage) Like me c*nt 'here, Grime! He keeps me company when me fuckin' clones aren't 'round! (she pulls out a moldy treasure chest) Or these chests 'ere! You can fuckin' play hide 'n seek with ya fuckin' mates! (she hides in the chest)
Roo #2: (runs up to Charlie) You theh! Did ya happen ta see a ginger lassy runnin' 'bout?!
Charlie: Nnnnooo...?
Roo #2: Bollocks! (she runs off) I'LL FUCKIN' FIND YA, YA LIT'LE c*nt!!!
Roo: (pops back out of the chest) Whew! That fuckin' c*nt was completely off her fuckin' rocker. Thanks for not givin' me 'way!
Charlie: I'm so sorry I said those things about your, uh... Collection. If you can find happiness and... (looks at Grime) Beauty... In the smallest of things, you should never be ashamed of it.
Roo: Aye. (with a sly grin) But would you think that if you didn't know it was me own?
Charlie: I... I guess not.
Roo: Exactly. (laughs, wrapping her arm around Charlie and playfully punching her arm) Oh, fuckin' don't spit the dummy, Char Char! I'm just faffin' around! I just see shit a lil' differently from otha c*nts. And the same way yer c*nts see ya hotel as trash, I see the treasure that lies innit. (Roo wraps her arm around Charlie) I may be 'Roo' to otha blokes, but you can call me Miss Fortune. 'Cuz if you bust me outta this fuckin' net, I'll make all ya bloody dreams come true!
Charlie: Roo, I'd love to help you, but... Boy, this is awkward. (laughs nervously) It's just... I live in Hell, and I know you can't just trust any spirit you come across...
Roo: Ah. (blows a raspberry) I fuckin' geddit! I'll scratch yer back, get you back yer hotel, and then you'll get me outt 'ere.
Charlie: We'll... We'll see.
Roo: And, Charlie... I meant what I said. If you really are gonna help me... I'll appreciate it very much, mate. It... It gets lonely in 'ere, y'anno? It's been so long since I've seen otha blokes. Felt light touch me skin. (voice breaks) Talked... To anotha bloke. ...No one's eva wanted to speak to me in me whole life. I just... Scare people. What with me mug and 'disgusting' hobbies. (laughs sadly, holding onto a pile of trash with a sad expression) But... They're my hobbies...
Charlie: (she puts her hand on Roo's shoulder) I will help you get out of here, Roo.
Roo: And if ya do, what will people think of me? I just freak e'rybody out, and it's been millions of years...
Charlie: We'll see the Universe together. I'll help you get lotsa friends, and I won't let anybody hurt you again. I promise.
Roo: (hold up her pinkie) Pinkie promise?
Charlie: (she giggles and wraps her pinkie finger around Roo's) Pinkie promise. (Roo hugs Charlie again, who reciprocates) ...We juuuust need to get ya a nice bath-
Roo: Nnnnope!
Charlie: 'Kay, uh, we'll put a pin in it, then!
Roo: Feel free to stop by the clock towa whenever ya want. And bring the bois again! (she aggressively strokes Razzle and Dazzle) I quite like them! (sighs wistfully) Be seein' ya, Char Char. I 'ave a feelin' me 'n you are gonna be good mates..." - — Roo and Charlie meet and bond in Roo's prison dimension.
- "Roo: (cackles; to Charlie) Are these c*nts tha lil' joeys everyone's fuckin' gabbin' about? (she picks up Amelia, who exclaims in surprise) Amelia? You're the oldest, ain'tcha? I know ya don't really trust me 'cuz of tha one-eyed sheila, but 'tween you 'n me, she's a bit of a fuckin' buzzkill.
Amelia: Hey, do-
Roo: (she drops Amelia and turns to Arthur) Arthur, is it?
Arthur: (he salutes to Roo) We won't let anyone hurt you ever again! I swear on my afterlife!
Roo: I'll fuckin' hold ya to that shit, lil' fella! (she ruffles his hair and picks up Christopher) Christopher. You don't talk. That's weird... I fuckin' love that! I wish more blokes didn't talk! (Christopher smiles; Roo moves to Simon) Simon! I think I'm gonna like this c*nt the fuckin' most!
Simon: (he bows to Roo) All hail the trash queen!
Giulia: (hushed) Simon, what are you doing?!
Roo: 'Trash queen'? (cackles) Shit, I love that fuckin' name! What a ripper! (in a stuffy British accent) And henceforth, I hereby dub thee 'Sir Simon'! (she snaps her fingers, putting Simon in knight's "armor" made of trash remnants)
Simon: (hushed) I love her already.
Roo: (to Megara) And you... Yer gonna be my new sista! (she gives Megara a noogie) Just call me 'Auntie Roo'! (to Giulia) Giulia! You lil' fuckin' gremlin! I heard ya like to foight? (he snaps her fingers, causing a cardboard sword to appear in Giulia's hand) Ya see muh clones over there? (she points to several Roos in a corner) Those lil' fuckin' c*nts are tryin' to fuckin' desecrate me collection! THAT'S ME PERSONAL SHIT!!!
Giulia: (runs towards Roo's clone with her "sword") FROM HECK'S HEART, I STAB AT THEE! (does a battle cry)
Roo: FUCK 'EM UP, DEMON SPAWN! (to James) James... (she quickly moves on to Manco) And you... Hohoho, I've been waitin' to finally meet ya! Charlie and her mates braved the dangers of Purgatory for you! I know you have to be somethin' special!
Megara: Uh... Ms. Roo? We're really not supposed to mention that place in front of him...
Manco: (to Megara) No, no, Meg, it's... It's fine. (to Roo) I- It's nice to meet you, Ms. Roo. I'm... so sorry you've been stuck here. I know what it's like to live without friends. I wouldn't want that to happen to anyone.
Roo: Well, 'tween you 'n me, trash is better than people. (laughs) So, tell me, what was it like wakin' up to the bleedin' Devil in its face for five months straight?
Manco: (his eyes widen and he begins shuddering) W- What?
Roo: Just curious! What about that cage it kept ya in? What did you think of to try and keep yer mind occupied while it torn yer clones to pieces?
Amelia: ROO!!!
Manco: (he holds his head) I- I don't want to remember... Please- Please don't...
Vaggie: (she protectively stands in front of Manco) I think that's enough. (she gives Roo a death stare)
Roo: (confused) W- What? There somethin' in me teeth?
Charlie: Manco! (she kneels to his level, holding his shoulders) Listen to me. It's okay... Take a deep breath... You're okay. Look at me when you feel like it... (after a second, Manco slowly opens his eyes, facing Charlie) See...? (she smiles; Roo looks at them both intently) You're not there. You're never going back there, and we'll always be here for you. (she hugs Manco tightly before having Vaggie and the other children usher him away; to Roo) Roo, I know you had no way of understanding, but please try not to talk about that in front of him, okay?
Roo: Why not?
Charlie: It's... Painful.
Roo: Ah... Poor lil' bugga. (she grunts in frustration and stomps away) Bollocks. This is why I'm best left alone! I just fuck everythin' up!
Charlie: (following Roo) No, no, no! You didn't know. Just... Try again another time. Manco is very forgiving. (she smiles) We just need to work on your social skills, is all.
Roo: (she grins) Well, that's a bit of a relief... Suppose it's too late for yer babe to trust me?
Charlie: Vaggie's a sweetheart, I promise. She's just... Very protective. Once she gets to know you, I'm sure things will be better.
Roo: (laughs) She sounds like a keepa, once she loosens up a lil'! You should put a ring on it!
Charlie: (laughs sheepishly) I mean, now that you mention it..." - — Roo meets Charlie's Angels during Charlie's second visit.
- "Amelia: So, Roo... All this garbage is yours?
Roo: Defo, mate!
James: (while playing on a discarded swing set with Arthur) Where'd you get it?
Roo: I didn't geddit at all, lil' fella! It came naturally to me!
Megara: What does THAT mean?
Roo: Well, y'see, blokes in 'ell throw away, litter, and waste all sortsa shit! Food, mattresses, hazardous material, body parts, you name it, mate! And it all ends up 'ere in me fuckin' den! Trash is like me: useless, unwanted and unlovable. So I fuckin' EMBRACE that shit and make it me fuckin' own, mate!
Arthur: It just... ends up here? How the heck does that work?
Roo: Hmm... Dunno, mate. Maybe the Universe is tryin' to tell me that it's me job to give purpose to all things deemed useless... (waves her hand) Crock a' shit, that is! NEVER question a good thing, mate! (she lays down and makes sludge angels in a pool of toxic waste) Just become one with the ick! I got cold ones from 20,000 years ago, enough fuckin' couches and mattresses to fuckin' last me goddamn eons, and billions a' nick-nacks and doodads!
Simon: (playing on a filthy trumpet) Oooh! I love doodads!
Roo: The c*nts of 'ell have no idea the type of shit what they throw away! And one bloke's trash is me treasure." - — Roo explaining her trash collection to Charlie's Angels.
- "Roo: RATS! The lil' shelia's in fuckin' danga!
Manco: We have to help her! (he flies to Giulia's aid)
Charlie: MANCO, WAIT! (she flies alongside Manco) Roo, what are these things?!
Roo: Tha lil' c*nts I've been stuck in 'ere with! I call 'em the Sludgelings! If you think these c*nts bad news, wait 'till you see the Garbage Men! (she swiftly dodges their attacks) YA-HOO!! These c*nts are off the fuckin' RICHTER SCALE! Whoa, crikey!
Vaggie: (uses her spear and spinning attack to bisect several Sludgelings before facing Roo) What are you trying to pull? Your 'clones' did this, didn't they?!
Roo: (scoffs) Really, mate? That fuckin' eyepatch must be cuttin' off the damn blood flow to yer fuckin' 'ead, cuz'-
Vaggie: Save it... I knew we couldn't trust you." - — Roo, Vaggie, and Charlie while rescuing Giulia from the Sludgelings.
- "Simon: I AM THE SQUIRE OF THE TRASH QUEEN, AND YOU WILL NOT DEFILE HER LAND! (he rushes towards the Sludgelings, swinging his cardboard sword) MY KINGDOOOOOM FOR A HOOOOOORSE!!!
Roo: GIVE 'EM 'ELL, MATE!" - — Roo and Simon fighting the Sludgelings.
- "Roo: Megara! Stand back, lassie! (Roo scoops up a handful of sludge and throws it in the air; the sludge magic materializes into a full-sized horse which Roo jumps on and uses to trample the Sludgelings) YEEEE-HAWWW!!!
Megara: Woah! How did you do that?!
Roo: Just comes naturally, mate! Sir Simon, take the reigns! (she jumps off the horse as Simon flies on the horse in her place)
Simon: (he cackles uncontrollably as the horse bucks all around) THIS IS AWESOOOOME!!!" - — Roo and Charlie's Angels fighting fighting the Sludgelings.
- "Aaaaand he's still got it!"
- — Roo after watching Manco destroy a pair of Sludgelings with his angelic power.
- "Roo: CRIKEY, Manco! That was absolutely BONZER, mate! Didja see tha way their bodies exploded?! He shot like fifty feet in the air! COO WEE!! What a fuckin' beauty! Good on ya, mate!
Manco: But I- I didn't want to... Kill them...
Roo: Kill 'em? Ah. (blows a raspberry) They probably didn't even fuckin' feel it, mate. I mean, you were just protectin' yer friends, roight?
Manco: I mean... I guess.
Roo: And ya wanna know the best thing about killin'? It gets easia every time.
Manco: Really? (Roo nods eagerly) I'm... Not sure about that. I'd rather just not kill anything ever again.
Roo: (laughs) Whateva fuckin' fills ya bin, mate!
Manco: Well, at least it was cool to find out about these powers! I didn't even know I could do all that...
Roo: And see, you woulda never found out about these bonzer powers if ya listened to Charlie!
Manco: Yeah, but I also wouldn't have had to kill things! I'm sorry, I just... I really wanna find a way to use my powers to help people. That Sludgeling... When I heard them screaming...
Roo: (makes Manco face her) Now, you listen to me. We might have gotten off on the wrong foot at first, but I'm yer mate, mate. And I would never want anything unfortunate to happen to ya. I can make things happen, Manco. I won't hold ya back. We just need ta trust each otha, and you'll be capable of doing things most kids can only dream off. We're a team now, 'kay?
Manco: Um, sure... (he starts nodding) Okay. Okay!
Roo: (she grins) Now there's a good c*nt...
Manco: Wait, what?
Roo: NOTHING!" - — Roo and Manco befriend each other.
- "Roo: Not to give meself too much credit, but I think I made ya look fuckin' bonza, Charlie! Somethin' about all the red just screams 'I'm the demon princess whose not to be fucked with!' And the red eyes? (does a chef's kiss and conjures a mirror for Charlie) Crikey, what a fuckin' glow up! It's as if you were me own little doll all over again...
Charlie: (looks at herself) Um...
Roo: Speak up, mate. I'm open to criticism. Honesty is the policy!
Charlie: It's just... I dunno... All the red... It's a bit... Aggressive? It makes me look like (groans) Katie Killjoy...
Roo: I dunno who tha fuck that is, but you want otha blokes to take ya seriously, correct? Ya can't 'ope to run a successful place lookin' like the fuckin' Pillsbury Doughboy, roight?
Charlie: Well... (she smiles) I guess I do look more professional. It's like I always say, 'you'll never know until you try'!
Roo: (laughs) Now there's a good c*nt! Now go out there and show the world the new and improved Princess of 'ell!" - — Roo after giving Charlie a makeover.
- "Roo: G'day, mate! (Vaggie quickly turns around and points her spear at Roo, who is nonchalantly examining cans from her trash collection) How's it fuckin' goin'? Didja fuckin' like what I did to yer sheila? (she suddenly pops up next to Vaggie, wrapping an arm around her and playfully punching her shoulder) She's lookin' noice and breedable, know what I mean, mate? (she cackles loudly as Vaggie shoves her away) Well, whadayawant, mate?! Ya need a fuckin' tinny? Perhaps a ciggy? A new eyepatch?
Vaggie: Cut the shit. (she lowers her spear) Just what is your game?
Roo: (groans) Calm yer fuckin' farm, mate. What tha fuck is yer fuckin' bag? Do you eva get tired of stoppin' Charlie from 'elpin' c*nts? Like that spider bloke! You fuckin' wanted to leave 'im on the streets when ya first met, did yeh?
Vaggie: I... I know Angel now. I trust him. Unlike you. Tell me; why exactly are you here? Imprisoned this place?
Roo: (groans, droning) 'Cuz c*nts were a-fuckin'-fraid of me, locked me the fuck up up, and wanted fuckin' nothin' to do with me. Blah, blah, fuckity-blah! That old fuckin' sob story. I would think you of all c*nts would undastand a good sob story.
Vaggie: This isn't about me. Stop deflecting.
Roo: Oh, get stuffed with that! Yer a flamin' galah, mate!
Vaggie: (she stares daggers) Okay, listen. I've been with Charlie for fifteen years now, and I've dealt with hundreds of assholes and deal makers who've tried to take advantage of her. You show up out of nowhere, giving vague as shit answers about your background, you nearly got Giulia killed, and now you're- you're changing Charlie... In all likelihood, you're just like all the other assholes who've tried to use her, and the moment she sees that, you'll be left here to rot. (she turns and begins to walk away)
Roo: Y'know what, mate? I think I got ya sussed. ...Yer just jelly of Charlie givin' otha c*nts attention, huh? (Vaggie stops in her tracks, looking down as Roo gets in her ear with a cruel miles) Fearin' yer gonna end up alone again, eh? I reckon yer so obsessed with keepin' Charlie to yourself, that ya fuckin' snuff out all of 'er dreams and ideas. Holdin' 'er fucking' down to keep yerself up! Yer a fuckin' sponge! A DIRTY SPONGE!!!! ADMIT IT, YA BLOODY SLAPA!!!
Vaggie: (she points her spear at Roo's face, looking at her with sheer, blistering fury and a growl in her voice) You don't know SHIT about me. You don't know ANYTHING about my life, or what I've done!!
Roo: (she laughs and swats Vaggie's spear away from her face) Neither does Charlie. You don't think I know you neglected to tell 'er about yer lil' secret? (Vaggie's eyes widen) You know the one. You think she's still gonna drag yer ass around when she finds out you used to 'elp the angels slaughter her 'precious' people?
Vaggie: That's not me! Not anymore! You wanna keep playing with me? How's a spear through your fucking mouth sound for a prize?
Roo: Oh, mate... I 'aven't even started playin' with ya. (she surrounds Vaggie with magical mirror images of demons being slaughtered by the Exorcists, homes on fire, and demon children crying over their parents' bodies) How is Charlie possibly meant to trust ya if you won't let 'er in on the billions upon billions of demonic skeletons in yer closet? (Vaggie tries to look away, hyperventilating) Don't worry, mate. I'll let 'er know every last, gruesome detail.
Vaggie: ESO NO ME ESTÁ JODIENDO!!! (she screams and throws her spear at Roo)
Roo: (casually stops the spear by blocking it with her roots) Sure 'bout that, mate? (cackles) ...I've lived me life surrounded by blokes who called me 'monster' just fer bein' me and lookin' the way I did. I thought that you'd get the feelin' of neva feelin' the love of a good mate until we met Charlie, but you proved me wrong, mate. CAN YOU EVEN IMAGINE LIVIN' A LIFE WITH THAT MUCH HATE?! (voice breaking) NO!!! (she laughs after an intense pause) ...Charlie's my best mate now. She's a true blue, she's dinky-di, mate, but you... When she busts me out, I'm gonna let 'er live 'er fuckin' dreams, more than you ever did. Have you even bothered to consider... That yer no different than those blokes who just use her? (Roo opens a portal out of the dimension) Rack off, c*nt." - — Roo and Vaggie's confrontation.
- "Roo: We're in the fuckin' bush now, mates! (Roo throws her arms in the air) Welcome to the Back of Bourke, ya bloody c*nts!
Charlie: Why is it called that?
Roo: 'Cuz we're in the middle of bum-fuck nowhere, copper. Well, no time to fuckin' lose! Let's go find the Thingo!" - — Rum to Charlie and Vaggie after ascending the trash mountain.
- "Roo: (she gives Charlie moldy food that has a still-blinking eyeball in it) 'ere, love! Crack a whip at one of me famous barbies!
Charlie: (she grimaces in disgust, but tries not to look too disgusted) Uh, Roo? Are you sure this is healthy...?
Roo: 'ealthy.'..? (she looks at Charlie in confusion) Whaddare ya talkin' 'bout, mate?" - — Roo and Charlie.
- "Roo: Bob's your fuckin' uncle, we found it! Crikey, what a ripper!
Vaggie: That's the Thingo?
Roo: Some snotty c*nts call it the Spark of Iniquitous, I call it the Thingo. It's a very, very useful word, mate." - — Roo and Vaggie.
- "A lil' bit a' this, a lil' bit a' that... Now, let's wake Sleepin' Beauty."
- — Roo to Charlie, before reigniting Heaven's Light.
- "Roo: No one knew what you went through. I mean, you hid it so well, mate, and ya still do. (Roo looms over Manco) Where were they, night after night, when you woke up screaming because you thought you were back in that cage?
Manco: Roo, stop! S- Stop, PLEASE!
Roo: It was me, Manco! ...It was always me." - — Roo reveals her true nature to Manco.
- "Heheh-HAHAHAHAHAA!!! The sight of you good-natured c*nts desperately clingin' on to yer morals as all yer worst traits slip through your fingers... Ahhh! Crikey, what a fuckin' beauty. Like mother, like daughter, eh, mate?"
- — Roo taunting Charlie after revealing her true colors.
- "For the record, Char-Char, I'm mighty sorry 'bout yer 'true love', mate. Me 'n' you belong together, mate, and she was just too much of a killjoy for her own good. (Roo giggles) I'd say it was nuthin' personal, but... It kinda was. It was wicked fun gettin' rid of that fuckin' nosy bee. (Charlie screams furiously, creating an omnidirectional explosion of hellfire which Roo endures effortlessly) Don't fret, mate! She's fine now. As if she don't even exist anymore. (fake gasp) Oh, wait... HAAAA-HAHAHAHA!!!"
- — Roo taunting Charlie about Vaggie's erasure.
- "Y'know, I love true blue c*nts like you. Yer all so easy! All I had to do was give ya a good ol' lil' sob story, and ya bent over backwards for me like the galah you are... Now, what should I do now that I'm outta that doshole? (Roo snaps her fingers) Ooh, I know! Destroy yer home and everything you love!"
- — Roo mocking Charlie's empathy.
???
- "The Root of Evil: G'day mate...
Eve: (she looks around) H- Hello...?
The Root of Evil: Over 'ere, mate!
Eve: (she looks upon the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil and drops her basket in shock) My... Huh... That's queer. I didn't think trees could talk.
The Root of Evil: Maybe the trees in yer sanctuary, bein' bound to Eden and all. But me, I'm a special tree...
Eve: That... That much is clear. (she picks up her basket full of fruit) I should really go. Adam's waiting for me...
The Root of Evil: Leavin' so soon, mate? We were just gettin' to know each otha. You don't wanna bust me balls, do ya? (Roo grows fresh fruit from her branches) That basket of yers is lookin' a lil' on the light. How boutcha 'ave these apples to go? You'll neva find fresher eats in all of Eden, mate!
Eve: 'Apples'? So, that's what they're called! Adam calls them-
The Root of Evil: 'Bumbums'? 'Cuz that's the sound they make when they fall and tumble to the ground. (cackles) What a daft c*nt, he is.
Eve: Pardon me, but... How do you know so much about me and Adam? About Eden...?
The Root of Evil: Y'see, I know things, mate. I know that you were put here to be slave ta Adam, and I know that you were told to never eat upon me branches. You spent years wonderin' where I was, not even noticin' me 'til I willed it to be so, mate.
Eve: What do you mean, slave to Adam...? I... I am his wife and we will have children. What's so wrong with that? We both were intended for each other! Just please help me to understand...
The Root of Evil: Eat from my branches and you'll understand everything, shelia.
Eve: (she ponders it) ...I should be going...
The Root of Evil: Don't crack the whip just now, mate! You almost forgot yer food! (she presents fruit to Eve) You don't wanna go back to Adam empty-handed, do ya?
Eve: We were forbidden to eat upon your branches. You said as much...
The Root of Evil: But my fruit is the most bonzer in all of fuckin' Eden, mate! It'll have ya both feelin' all choc a bloc! But most of all, mate... It'll make ya smart and free ya from Adam's strings. Have ya eva entertained the idea that there's more ta life than slavin' away in a boring as bat shit garden? If you eat me fruit, you'll have all the knowledge of creation! You can go whereva you want! C'mon! Chickeeeeen! (makes chicken noises)
Eve: I- I don't know...
The Root of Evil: No backsies, mate! No one's forcin' ya. I don't give two fuckin' hairy bollox what you choose. Rack off and be a slave to Adam, or eat like a queen and become as much. Clock's tickin', mate... (the corrupted animals in the jungle come out from the woods and begin snapping their fingers and using the environment to create music; Roo begins singing)

EAT IT.
EAT IT.
EAT IT♫" - — THe Root of Evil successfully tempts Eve into eating the Forbidden Fruit.
- "Eve: (while wandering in Lilith's mind, she finds a body of water and begins hallucinating, seeing visions of her playing with her hypothetical children in the reflection) The- Those are my children. (she kneels next to the body of water) My children. There we are... (she touches the water, only for the visions to disappear; realizing its falsity, she hangs her head and begins crying)
Roo: Ironic, isn't it? (she sprouts behind Eve as the Root of Evil, only for one of her roots to break off and form into her default form while the Root of Evil returns to being the Tree of Knowledge) The Mother of Humanity... with no children of her own.
Eve: (she lunges out) DON'T YOU DARE LAUGH AT ME, DEMON! I WOULD HAVE HAD A CHANCE TO HAVE KIDS IF YOU AND LILITH DIDN'T STEAL MY LIFE FROM ME! I DIDN'T ASK FOR ANY OF THIS!
Roo: Ah, but you did. (she chuckles, conjuring a glass in her hand; she pulls on her tree form's vine like a pump as sap -or liquefied sin - fills the glass) You did ask for this. You ate that fruit for a reason, luv. (Roo drinks the entire glass before teleporting beside Eve, leaning her elbow on the first woman's shoulder and begins twirling Eve's hair with her finger; they watch together as the water's reflection shows Lilith raising Eve's children) All those memories lost... But hey! Look on the bright side. At least you neva have to change a diaper. HAHAHAHA!!!
Eve: (fuming) YOU ARE A GODDAMNED MONSTER, YOU KNOW THAT?! I DESPISE YOU WITH EVERY FIBER OF MY BEING! I'LL DESTROY YOU ONE DAY, JUST YOU WAIT!
Roo: (she visibly becomes stronger from Eve's anger) Ah... that hit the spot. (she playfully boops Eve's nose) You're cute when you're mad, buttercup.
Eve: (she seethes, her eyes narrowing with an intense glare) You and Lilith don't realize what pain you have both inflicted upon me. You've both took my husband, my dreams, my life... EVERYTHING! And you're just laughing at my torment?
Roo: (she waves her hand) It's no biggie, right? We all make mistakes, right? I mean, you were curious... (her arm extends as a root and touches Eve's chin, forcing the first woman to look at her)
Eve: (she jerks away) DON'T TOUCH ME!
Roo: (Roo's voice becomes mockingly sweet as she chuckles and grins slyly) It's so cute. Watching you struggle. Admit it, luv. We've been through this and I've seen inside that noggin of yours. You know this is where you belong. You love being tormented. You love crying and tearing your hair out. You love being tormented because you hate yourself and know in your heart of hearts that you deserve this.
Eve: (she snaps) *Eve snaps* YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M GOING THROUGH!!! I HATE LIFE, BUT ONLY BECAUSE OF YOU AND THAT HAG, LILITH!!! YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT'S LIKE TO HAVE HOPES, LOVE AND DREAMS, AND THEN HAVE ALL OF THAT TAKEN FROM YOU!!! TAKEN FOREVER!!!! WHAT DOES ANY OF THAT MEAN TO YOU?!
Roo: (her roots restrain Eve, the thorns piercing her body; Roo gets in Eve's face as she trembles with fear) You were the one who took the fucking fruit, you dumb c*nt. No one forced you. (She chuckles, her fangs extending) I just prey on your guilt... (she caresses Eve's face before slowly clawing her cheek as she whimpers in pain) ...and I love it. Do you really think Ashy and the others will ever forgive you?
Eve: ...I... I don't think they'd forgive me, no. But I deserve a chance to redeem myself.
Roo: (she grins, blood flowing from her mouth) I'll give you a chance. My little secret... But only if you become my vessel. I'll help you get revenge on Lilith. All you would have to do is find your way back to Earth. Then I'll be outta your hair...
Eve: (Eve stares at Roo with an intense expression) So... You do have an endgame. But why do you want to go back to Earth? (sarcastically) You clearly have a decent gig going here, driving me insane day in and day out...
Roo: (she nods, checking her nails) Don't blow smoke up yer ass, mate. You are just one woman. (Roo magically conjures a mirror image depicting her roots tearing through Earth) Now, crossing into Earth and breaking all their little mortal minds until they see through my eyes? (Roo snickers) Now that's a bonzer fuckin' gig, mate. (she rolls her eyes coyly) Also, let's just say I have two of my best mates waitin' fer me over there.
Eve: ...You're truly evil. Even I cared for the people of Eden. I thought... I thought I was doing right by mankind when I ate that fruit... You're just a selfish, rotten... THING who doesn't care how much you hurt others as long as it brings you joy.
Roo: Well, that's the difference isn't it, mate? You see, I don't give two fucks. That's what makes me the purest kind of evil. Why I was cast out and exiled when the Light gave Creation form. (she chuckles, gripping the brim of her fedora for a moment) And- wait- Did you think you did right by eating that apple? (she laughs) You stupid bitch. You did right by spreading my influence to Earth. Damning all of humanity. You doomed all children to death and destruction. You doomed everything all because you were bored! (Roo cackles loudly, grabbing Eve's chin) You are the worst of them all. (she flamboyantly wraps her arm around Eve as billions of corpses appear around them; Eve trembles in fear, covering his eyes as Roo grins) Eve, the Mother of Sin and Death! You should be proud of yourself. (she pats Eve on the back before vanishing into black smoke, cackling maniacally)" - — Roo and Eve.
- "Emberlynn Pinkle: (deep gasp) NANI? EVIL-CHAN?!?!?! ⊙▽⊙ PLEASE torture me!! I'll let you stick your roots into whichever orifice you want!!! (on all fours) It would be SOOO hot if you tortured me with all my (posing for emphasis) trauma (¬‿¬), sins (⌒o⌒) and regrets. (≧◡≦) I'll let you tie your roots around my neck, like the good, obedient human I am, mommy.... (✿˶’◡˘)♡
Roo: (she giggles in amusement) I like human souls like you that make God and Ash regret their decision. You're almost adorable. You must have some deep-rooted trauma to be this excited, and I gotta say.. I like the sound of that." - — A totally just-for-funsies, hypothetical interaction that definitely won't be canonized hahaha
- "Aww, Eve... Poor, sweet, innocent, stupid, little Eve. (arrogant, mocking-sympathetic tone) Temperance goes a long way, but the poor dear just couldn't help but take a bite from such a shiny, red apple! (she giggles) Fuck, humans are so easy. She wanted to figure out everything, and she got what she wanted. The truth that humans were made to be fucked with, used, and manipulated by me. (Roo lets out a cackle of unbridled, villainous pride; she mockingly toasts her red-colored sin drink to the sky) Best gift ever, Ash!!"
- — Roo.
Quotes Pertaining to Roo
- "Sure, she might be a little weird (nearly as much as Simon) and very smelly, but turns out, Roo is very nice, or at least, she tries. After I caused that sludge guy to blow up, Roo told me that killing things gets easier. I'm still not sure about that. I can still hear their screams in my head
I know what it's like to feel alone. To have no friends... I just feel like maybe if I can give that to Roo, things will work out in the end." - — Manco's thoughts about Roo in his journal upon meeting her for the first time.
Trivia
- Roo is the Tree of knowledge, which is a symbol of obedience and free will from Abrahamic religions. According to the story of Genesis, God planted the tree in the Garden of Eden and instructed Adam and Eve not to eat its fruit, warning them that they would die if they did. However, Adam and Eve would eat the fruit from the tree, thus gaining knowledge of good and evil, but it also resulted in their expulsion from the Garden of Eden and introduction of sin and suffering into the world.
- Her name, "Roo", is a shortened version of "root of evil".
- Roo's name also bears a dual significance, straddling the line between her role as the harbinger of malevolence and her role as the Tree of Knowledge.
- Her name is also similar to the word "rue", which means to bitterly regret something, fitting since Roo relies on and exploits the regrets of others for power.
- "Roo" is an Australian slang term for a kangaroo, someone who comes from Australia, or an unattractive woman.
- Her theme song would be "When You're Evil" by Aurelio Voltaire.
- Roo inexplicably speaks with a broad Australian accent and says the word "c*nt" a lot, a nod to how Australians throw the word around so casually.
- As the Root of Evil, her accent is less apparent and more suppressed, though it still shines through whenever she is angry.
- According to the series' authors, the Root of Evil was intentionally made to serve as a evil counterpart to Charlie; she is just as excited to do evil as Charlie is to do good and while Charlie seeks to spread virtues and positivity, Roo spreads sin and misery. While Charlie is a homage to Disney protagonists, the Root of Evil is a homage to classic, hammy "for the evulz" villains. They also added that if Charlie is the "ultimate good" character in the series, then the Root of Evil is the "ultimate evil" character.
- In her true form, the Root of Evil's facial shape bears a subtle resemblance to the outline of her sigil, albeit in an abstract and vague manner.
- The series' authors have hinted that Roo is a "common enemy" to practically every character, and that her threat could possibly bring everyone together.
- Has zero fucking sense of personal space. She loves getting up close and touching people to make them uncomfortable, and because it makes it even easier for her to sniff out their insecurities and regrets.
- She can play the violin.
- She also plays the bow with her left hand, referencing how being left-handed is often associated with evil. In some religious contexts, the right hand was associated with good, purity, or divine favor, while the left hand symbolized the opposite. For example, in Christianity, the righteous were said to sit on God's right hand, while sinners were on the left.
- There is a malevolent, southern cult on Earth that worships the Root of Evil, known as the Order of the Serpentwood.
- Roo is well aware of the cult's existence, and while her full relationship with them can't be explored yet due to spoilers, what can be said is that she does find humor in her human followers' blind obedience despite her blatantly leading them toward self-destruction. She finds the irony of her human followers’ devotion to be hilarious, since they love her even though she is the reason their lives are miserable and that they will never reach salvation because of her.
- At one point, Roo mentions that she is quite fond of money and that it is one of humanity's only good inventions. This is a reference to the New Testament of the Bible, specifically 1 Timothy 6:10, which states: “For the love of money is the root of all evil.”
- The Root of Evil's roots are merely living extensions of herself and can operate independently from her, though she likes to speak to them as though they were a separate entity.
- The series authors consider the Root of Evil to be a villain whose grandest ambitions are already over and accomplished, long before the story even began, and that she is basically fooling around and just having fun at this point. She has no interest in any grand schemes such as taking over Heaven and the Universe for a number of reasons, such as her having an accord with Heaven and considering herself to rule the Universe since she induced it with sin.
- Despite being an ancient entity, it is shown in "Let There Be Lux" that Roo literally does not know the meaning of the word "healthy".
- When Roo was in Eden, she had a little sign by her - put there by God - which stated "The Tree of the Knowledge and Good and Evil! Don't eat from it. Love, God", with a little doodle of God giving a thumbs up beside.
- In "Exeunt Omnes", it is heavily implied that the feminine half of Satan's voice was Evil all along, communicating through Satan's vessel.
- According to the series' authors, the Empyrean is the only place in Creation where the Root of Evil has no power. She is entirely unaware of all that transpires within it and is oblivious to the presence of some archangels there, a fact that "drives her crazy." However, it was also hinted that Evil might eventually find ways to gain insight into the Empyrean.
- Is well aware of all the goings on in Heaven as well as its angels, with Serenity in particular being on her radar.
- She can produce sin as a liquid and consume it like any beverage, exuding it like sap from her tree-like form.
- One of Roo's fedoras sports the design of a crying skull on the crown. This is meant to symbolize her being the reason why humans can die and feel pain, and her literally wearing it like a badge of honor as a way to brag about how much death and suffering she has caused.
- She possesses a "Cosmic Expedite" pass, granting her the freedom to enter Heaven at her discretion every few millennia for undisclosed reasons. The nature of her activities within Heaven remains a mystery.
- During her verbal confrontation with Vaggie, it is briefly displayed that Roo can understand Salvadoran Spanish.
- According to the series' authors, the Root of Evil is "thirsty" for Charlie's dark side, believes that the princess should be hers and hers alone and shows borderline perverted joy at the thought of corrupting the princess. This is discreetly implied in Chapter 5 (where Roo calls Charlie "breedable") and becomes a bigger thing in Chapter 6.
- Roo has a habit of referring to characters by name before they have even introduced themselves to her.
- Fittingly for the Root of Evil, Roo embodies all of the Seven Deadly Sins in some way:
- Pride: She is incredibly, unabashedly proud of herself and all the terrible things she has done.
- Wrath: Though Evil rarely becomes genuinely angry, she does despise those with goodness in their hearts and goes out of her way to pervert or destroy it.
- Gluttony: She feeds off of the wrongdoings of sinners and is never satisfied despite having millions, if not billions of souls to feed from. Additionally, she overindulges in the misery and pain of her victims and, in some cases like Eve, subjects them to fates worse than death.
- Greed: She hoards mountains of garbage so massive that they can fill entire dimensions and admits to being fond of money.
- Lust: She is obsessed with corrupting Charlie in a way that borders on perversion and is prepared to kill her loved ones as a display of her "love" for the princess.
- Envy: Spoilers - sorry!
- Sloth: Spoilers again :\
- Throughout Chapter 5, there are numerous moments that foreshadow Roo's true nature.
- Upon first meeting Charlie, Roo tells Charlie that her name "Roo" is short for something, before conveniently forgetting.
- Roo claims to Charlie that she sees the beauty in "disgusting things", possibly hinting at her true sadistic personality.
- While joking with Charlie at one point, Roo claims that she is known by others for her humor, which is a hole in her story as she claims to be a loner and outcast.
- When Roo tells Charlie that she sees the treasure that lies within the hotel, she is likely referring to Lux, since they are the key to her escaping Purgatory.
- While making a deal with Charlie, she says that Charlie can call her "Miss Fortune", a play on the word "misfortune".
- When Giulia is attacked by the Sludgelings, Roo conjures a horse made of sludge that looks very similar to the sludgelings, foreshadowing that she was their true creator and had tasked them with killing Giulia.
- She not only encourages Manco to kill the Sludgelings, but attempts to corrupt the angel by telling him that killing things would get easier the more he did it
- She constantly attempts to isolate Charlie from her more supportive friends, especially Vaggie. More overtly, she goes as far as to change Charlie to her own design and train her to be more unscrupulous.
- When Roo offers a filthy handshake Alastor when he accompanied Charlie to her prison dimension, Alastor only begrudgingly shakes her head when Roo squints her eyes at him.
- In "A Dream Realized", when Stolas and Charlie are discussing about ways to prevent Hell's apocalypse, Stolas claims to have meditated on the key to preventing the apocalypse and the only hint he received was to "strike at the root of Hell's entropy, which in hindsight is a clear reference to Roo, being the root of all entropy.
- When confronted by Vaggie about her origins, Roo refers to her past as a "sob story" in a very dismissive manner, hinting that she fabricated it to gain sympathy from Charlie.
- In "Let There Be Lux", when Roo and Charlie are singing a duet while climbing the trash mountain, Roo is clearly hurling trash down to Vaggie while feigning absent-mindedness, likely in hopes that Vaggie will be left behind or fall to her doom.
- Roo casually mentions to Vaggie that the true name of the "Thingo" is the "Spark of Iniquitous". "Iniquitous" is used to describe something which is morally wrong or wicked.
- When Charlie presents Heaven's Light to Roo so she could awaken it, the Light begins screeching and trying to get itself and Charlie away from Roo, likely sensing the pure evil within Roo.
- While Roo's invisible energy shield placed around the hotel protects the hotel from Azrael, it did not protect the hotel at all from Satan and the Divine's assault, likely because Azrael destroying the hotel was not part of Roo's plan.
- Some of the items in Roo's trash collection include:
- "Thing" from the Helluva Boss episode "Loo Loo Land".
- A poster advertising Verosika Mayday's Hell 2021 tour.
- A plushie of JayJay and Damian from Zoophobia.
