Rum is a recurring antagonist in Hazbin Hotel: Journey to the Light.
He is a serial murderer, holding the position of third-in-command within the Insurgency. Additionally, he plays the role of Izzi's eccentric yet cruel associate, serving as both a comedic element and an accomplice in their unlawful activities. While Izzi is driven by different motives, Rum solely revels in sadistic amusement, epitomizing a ruthless serial killer. He remains consistently close to Izzi, never too far from his boss.
Biography
Events of Hazbin Hotel: Journey to the Light
In "A Complete Shitshow", Rum is one of the many Insurgency members to launch an attack on an Overlord, Stellar. After Stellar is erased and his crew captured, Rum begged Izzi to let him kill Stellar crew, only to be disappointed when Izzi said he wanted them to himself.
In "My Brotha Arackniss", Rum is shown mounting Stellar's head on Izzi's wall and severing the wings from the fallen Overlord's body. He later goes with Izzi when his boss went to inform Sir Pentious of his mistake of thinking he had captured Angel Dust when in reality it was Arackniss.
In "A Simple Scouting Mission", Rum and several Insurgency members fight off a band of Exterminators who were sent to retrieve angelic weapons seized by the Insurgency. Rum and the Insurgency kill most of the Exterminators brutally and sadistically, and Rum called dibs on decapitating their corpses as Izzi wanted their heads for his wall.
In "Love of Light", Rum, Izzi and Striker attempt to kill Vaggie, Crymini and Fergus so that they could capture Octavia. During the fight, Rum catches Octavia and harasses her, pressing his knife against her face and lecherous telling her that he was going to have fun with her. Fortunately, Octavia is saved by Crymini, who bites off Rum's right arm, sending the sinner running and crying in pain.
Later at the Insurgency's base, Rum is pissed off over his missing arm until Striker tells him to suck it up and that he can heal his arm back due to his nature as a sinner, while Striker has lost part of his tail which was cut off by Vaggie. Rum begins hitting on Striker, which enrages the imp to the point where he stabs Rum in his arm stump, this making his lost arm a permanent injury.
In "Old Habits", Rum follows Izzi into an Imp City bar, stealthily watching him propose a deal to Blitzø, asking the imp to join the Insurgency. Rum moves closer and closer to Blitzø as the conversation gets more tense, and when Blitzø finally rejects Izzi's offer, Rum lunges at the imp to kill him, which Blitzø narrowly dodges (though only due to Izzi alluding to Rum's presence mere seconds beforehand). Rum continues attacking Blitzø, managing to stab him through the wrist before Blitzø was able to crawl his way up Rum's body and strangle him with his tail. Rum wrestled Blitzø off and threw him to the ground, but Blitzø's tail remained tightened on his neck and the imp, and Blitzø used Rum's attack against him by launching the sinner out of the bar as Rum threw him.
In "Metatron, The Voice of God", Rum is hanging out in Izzi's mansion while his boss is constructing blessed grenades. The two are informed by Striker that thousands of their troops are currently injured, many to the point of not being suitable for combat. Rum, being a bloodthirsty killer, suggests killing them all to clean out the gear, but Izzi opts to have their injured experimented on and tortured by Loopty Goopty and Lyle Lipton perform in order to replace their lost limbs, skin, and parts of their bodies with angelic weapons and blessed armor. After Striker leaves, Rum tells Izzi that Carmilla's forces have been advancing on the Insurgency, before inquiring why Izzi had decided to leave Octavia alive when confronting her at the Hazbin Hotel. Izzi replies that he believes Octavia to be the key to the Insurgency's victory and that he can mold her into something more than she already is. Rum comes around to Izzi's idea and is excited by the prospect.
In the events of "Hell 2 Heaven," Rum attends a meeting with the Insurgency's members wherein Izzi lays out her intricate scheme to eliminate Carmilla Carmine before the Insurgency assembly. Unexpectedly, Sir Pentious emerges, defying odds by surviving his abandonment by Striker. Izzi, Rum, and Striker react with mild surprise, and Izzi notices that Pentious appears to bear no grudge against them and rationalizes Striker's actions as a necessary measure. With this atmosphere, Izzi carries on with his exposition to the Insurgency, eventually directing them to get ready for action. Unbeknownst to the Insurgency leaders, Pentious covertly retreats to the Hazbin Hotel and discreetly reveals Izzi's entire plan to its inhabitants.
During the execution of Izzi's plan to eliminate Carmilla, an intense physical struggle ensues between them. Carmilla manages to overpower Izzi with her sheer strength, driving her claws into his abdomen. She readies her blessed sidearm to deliver a point-blank shot to Izzi's head. Just as she's about to finish him off, Rum enters the scene, swiftly thrusting his blessed knife into Carmilla's side. This sudden attack throws the weakened Overlord off Izzi, creating a momentary diversion. Izzi attempts to kill Carmilla with her own side arm, but is thwarted by Charlie. Rum and the other Insurgency members are forced to retreat when Izzi rage-quits his attempt on Carmilla's life.
In "Extermination Day: Part 1" Rum, Izzi, and Striker engage in a stake-out within Cocytus. To counteract the biting cold, they wear enchanted pendants that emanate the comforting warmth of blessed fire.Despite the pendant's warmth, Rum remains relentlessly bothered by the frigid atmosphere and complains about it, a possible reference to his reptilian nature. During a conversation with Izzi, Rum reveals that Extermination Day is imminent, mere hours away. Urging Rum to take initiative, Izzi directs him to establish contact with the Insurgency base, ensuring that the Exorcists receive the intended "presents."
In "Extermination Day Part 2: Live Fully, Love Forever", Izzi, Striker, and Rum successfully infiltrate Andrealphus' palace after Octavia signals Izzi, making their way to the balcony just in time to witness Octavia and Stolas engaged in a fierce battle against Stella and Andrealphus in the palace courtyard. Before they can react further, their intrusion is met with an unexpected counterattack from none other than Blitzø, Moxxie, and Loona. The trio springs into action, launching separate assaults on Izzi, Striker, and Rum. During the clash, Loona effortlessly, and hilarious, pounces on Rum and mauls him brutally as he screams helplessly. After Izzi seemingly runs away and Striker is knocked out, Blitzø asks Loona how she is doing with Rum, to which Loona gives Blitzø a thumbs up with Rum still in her mouth. After Izzi successfully kills Stolas, a horrifically injured Rum limps away from the scene with Striker.
In "Land of the Dead", after the events of Extermination Day, Izzi triumphantly returns to the Insurgency's headquarters with a severely injured Rum, their glee at Stolas' death uncontainable. Izzi and Rum to bask in their triumph over pirate rum. While enjoying pirate rum with Izzi, Rum asks the sinner about Octavia, to which Izzi assures her compliance while staring out a window.
In "Eclipse of the Heart", Rum joins Izzi outside the Insurgency base when Octavia arrives to accept his deal. Later, Rum and Izzi chilled together in Izzi's office, during which Izzi gleefully bragged about killing Stolas and mocked Octavia's obliviousness. Izzi and Rum goofed off together, laughing uncontrollably, and reveling in their victory.
In "Let's Go Out With A Bang", Izzi confronts Sir Pentious about his betrayal of the Insurgency, with him ratting information out to the hotel crew. When Pentious confesses, Rum, who had been stealthily behind Pentious the entire time, ruthlessly stabbed the snake with a blessed knife, first in the back and then in the abdomen, eviscerating him. Rum grinned sadistically as he and Izzi left Pentious to bleed out in the wake of his betrayal.
Rum later helps Izzi subdue Octavia, typing her with a blessed rop, though he hilariously fails as Striker takes over. When a team led by Blitzø infiltrate the Insurgency's base, Izzi and Rum went to confront them. Rum sadistically corners the team along with Striker and the Insurgency soldiers, with Rum ordering the soldiers to hold their fire since he wanted to take his time killing the infiltrators. However the hotel's reinforcements arrive in the form of Alastor, Niffty and Baxter, the latter assisted by Loopty Goopty, Lyle Lipton, and the Egg Bois. Rum cowardly attempted to run away until Baxter cut him off by jumping in front of him in his and Pentious' death mech. In a vengeful act for Sir Pentious' demise, Baxter uses a blessed death ray to slice Rum's legs off. Rum screamed in agony as the Egg Bois advanced on him, killing him off-screen in a brutal and over-the-top way as vengeance for their boss and "father".
Personality
Rum is a psychotic, brutal, and minatory sadist who, to his victims and enemies, struts about with a slimy, smooth-talking and soft-spoken attitude with the intonation of a cold serial killer. He has a gentle tone of voice and way of speaking even though it is obvious that he is a vicious monster. He is not especially loyal to Izzi (in fact, he is quite scared of him), but is quick to fight the Insurgency's battles as it gives him the chance to kill his enemies up close and personal. He is extremely homicidal to a laughable degree, with murder being his go-to solution to any problems, even if it is absolutely not necessary. He is excessively proud of his brutal murders with even the Insurgency's soldiers bemoaning Rum bragging for two straight hours about an elderly couple he murdered.
Rum frequently serves as a comedic foil to Izzi and Striker. His tendency to resort to unnecessary violence stands in stark contrast to the more strategic and measured methods favored by Izzi and Striker. During a stake-out at Andrealphus' palace alongside Izzi and Striker, Rum's amusing behavior becomes evident. While Izzi and Striker remain resolutely unperturbed by the cold weather, fully engrossed in their mission, Rum amusingly becomes the center of attention due to his continuous complaints about the chilly conditions. Furthermore, a recurring comedic element involves Rum's comically awkward attempts to adjust to the loss of his right arm after Striker used a blessed knife to prevent his arm from healing after Crymini bit it off.
In the company of his "companions" and fellow allies, Rum sheds his enigmatic demeanor and adopts a more relaxed and casual attitude. He becomes openly boastful and occasionally displays a somewhat dim-witted side. He relishes interacting with the other members of the Insurgency, engaging in lengthy conversations about his murderous exploits and reveling in the tales. Additionally, he finds enjoyment in participating in activities such as darts and five-finger-fillet, where his fiercely competitive nature comes to the forefront. However, his competitive streak can turn darkly intense. In moments of defeat, Rum's inability to handle loss becomes evident, often leading to him shooting angry glares when faced with a setback. In a particularly extreme incident, he goes to the extreme of killing an Insurgency soldier who mocked him following a loss in a dart game. This showcases his propensity for violence and the extent to which his temper can escalate when his ego is bruised.
Rum has a extremely creepy, downright lecherous attitude towards his victims. When he managed to capture Octavia, rather than bring her to Izzi as he was told, he took his time and sadistically rubbed a knife along her face while stating that he and Izzi would have "a blast" with her. He also gleefully admitted to Octavia that his victims' resistance and struggling was his favorite part of doing heinous things to them.
He embodies a brutal and unscrupulous nature, taking pleasure in playing sadistic games with those captured by the Insurgency as adversaries. His approach to interrogation is devoid of honor, as he extracts information before callously ending their lives, showing little regard for whether the information was valuable or not. His behavior displays a distinct lack of courage, often targeting individuals he deems vulnerable or already injured. This cowardly disposition translates into his combat tactics, which lean heavily towards underhanded and sneaky methods. He frequently resorts to ambushing and launching surprise attacks from behind, showcasing his preference for tactics that capitalize on an element of surprise rather than direct confrontation.
Rum, despite seeming calm on the outside, can turn into a totally irrational, braindead moron in high-stakes situations.
Despite his occasional goofy and entertaining behavior, Rum ultimately presents himself as a deeply pitiable and unappealing figure. His misguided belief that ambushing and killing unsuspecting individuals elevates his status as "cool" and superior underscores his warped perspective. This perception of superiority is marred by the fact that he resorts to such cowardly tactics. Interestingly, even among the terrorists within the Insurgency, Rum's demeanor is met with disdain. His cocky attitude and reliance on sneaky tactics seem to alienate him from his fellow Insurgency members.
Appearance
Rum is a humanoid lizard sinner, characterized by his scaly green skin texture, pronounced claws, and a slender, barbed tail. His physical features also include a mop of dark blonde hair, while his striking pale red eyes stand out, adorned with concentric circles that lend an enigmatic aura.
In terms of attire, Rum's unique sense of style is reflected in his choice of clothing. He adorns a pinkish-red Hawaiian shirt adorned with an intricate orange floral pattern, the sleeves of which he often rolls up. This distinctive choice of upper wear is complemented by his white pants and grey shoes, collectively shaping his signature look.
As of "Love of Light", Rem is permanently disabled and without a right arm, as it was bitten off by Crymini and later cut again by Striker with a blessed knife, leaving him unable to regenerate.

Izzi
Izzi is Rum's boyfriend and boss. Rum respects Izzi to a certain degree and as Izzi is one of the only people capable of reeling Rum in when he gets too excited or bloodthirsty. Despite his terrifying attitude while playing with his victims, Rum tends to look like a goofy and bumbling moron in comparison to Izzi, trying to keep his boss' favor since he knows that Izzi would happily discard him if he lagged behind. Rum has a habit of excitedly trying to tell Izzi how many of the Insurgency's enemies he has killed and how he killed them, but Izzi is less than interested and shuts Rum up every time he tries to get detailed.
Rum has a possessive crush on Izzi; he simps for his boss constantly and desires his praise, gets touchy with Izzi numerous times, and casually calls him "babe".

Rum: (he chuckles and begins talking on a walkie-talkie) Yo, Bill? You know those people we captured for donating to that shithole hotel? Send 'em all up to the boss. I think it's time we... 'set 'em free'.
Izzi: (laughs deviously as he loads the launcher with a blessed missile) Oh, you just get me." - — Rum conspiring with Izzi and Striker.
- "Rum: AH SHIT!!! MY MOTHERFUCKIN' ARM!! That fucking bitch is gonna fuckin' get it... DAMN!

Izzi: We take the cunt down the ol' fashioned way: Guns a-blazin' and bombs a-droppin'. We'll kill all of her hired guns 'til she's got nothin' left to hide behind. (laughs) They should feel ashamed, but I suppose they're not capable o' that.
Rum: You're damn right boss. Though, at the risk of this sounding like a QnA session... why are you so interested in that one useless Goetia? Ya had the chance to kill 'er and ya didn't. I woulda painted that room red, if you know what I mean... (chuckles lowly)
Izzi: (he turns around to face Rum) Why wouldn't I be interested, mate? She’s a broken bird who has potential to become a hell of a lot more than a 'useless Goetia'. With me at her side of course. (he grins widely and begins tossing a handbomb up in the air and letting it fall back into his hand) None of ya are to hurt a feather on 'er 'ead. She's just vulnerable and lost enough for me to make my way into 'er heart. Besides, her daddy's book is our one-way ticket to a dead Lucifer and the establishment of a true society for the damned. She could be... a queen. A demon queen, leading the rebellion by me side. She’s a powerful ally to 'ave, and a dangerous one to be against us. She's the key to it all.
Rum: (groans) Sure, we'll reel 'er in and get that magic book but what then? She's a fucking namby pamby princess no different than 'er dad. She ain't gonna like all the blood, gore and cruelty... and we gots plenty o' both, and plenty more to come.
Izzi: Oh, she won’t be staying a ‘princess’ for long, mate. (he looks out his massive window, grinning) Think of ‘er like... a trophy.
Rum: (he giggles and approaches Izzi from behind, putting his head beside Izzi's) Yer a fucking genius, Iz. But what if she's stupid enough to causes problems 'n shit fer us? (he holds his knife up and glares at it, his and Izzi's faces reflecting off it) Then what, bud?
Izzi: Well, she THINKS she's a princess. When I take 'er under my wing the first thing she'll learn is that the higher up ya start, the further down ya can fall. She'll learn, mate. Oh, she'll learn... (he and Rum begin cackling loudly together, Izzi spinning in his chair)" - — Izzi and Rum scheming.
