IMPORTANT NOTE: This character is retired and irrelevant to Journey to the Light as of Chapter 5. We highly suggest that you read Roo instead.
- "Everything is wrong, and nothing is the same. And I will never know where I'm going, or how to come back. I am nothing, and I am always... Here."
- — Satan.
- "This is my purpose. This is what I'm meant to do! The Universe is a cruel, destructive place. Everyone dies and everything goes on. It's so... meaningless. I was... wrong, Charlotte. Perhaps. We all deserve to live. We all deserve a better place. The Root of Evil was the only one who saw things for what they truly were. The Root understood that to bring peace, something must die. This was her mantra. The Universe is a cycle meant to be broken. The first step for this to be a reality is to burn it. And after that, perhaps through the resilience of life, a new one shall blossom from the Root of Evil's bough. [...] (its voice becomes layered and overtaken by Roo's) Don't be scared, Charlie. You knew this already, mate."
- — Satan while being merged into Roo.
Satan is a retired antagonist of Hazbin Hotel: Journey to the Light.
It serves as one of the two overarching antagonists alongside Lucifer in Chapter 1, one of the two main antagonists of Chapter 2 alongside Beelzebub, the main antagonist of Chapter 3, a minor, yet pivotal antagonist in Chapter 4, and a major antagonist in Chapter 5. It is also the overarching antagonist of Alastor's storyline.
In the past, Satan was once a benevolent member of the Light Beyond the Stars, who were created by God to aide Him in constructing creation. However, Satan became twisted by Forbidden Knowledge during its attempt to imprison the Root of Evil, who poisoned its mind with sin and Forbidden Knowledge, forcing it to defy God's order and effectively erasing Satan's personality though its body and essence remained active, puppeteered by Roo. After being rejected by its peers when it tried to sway them from following God, Satan defected from the Light Beyond the Stars and began its mission to eradicate all that God had created. Satan (and by extension, the Root of All Evil) was also the source of Alastor's immense power.
Following its self-exile, Satan aspired to decimate Creation in the Root of All Evil's name. It allied with the Prince of Heaven, Lucifer, and conspired to ravage the Heavens, though both of them were defeated with Satan contained within Purgatory. Although it remained imprisoned for centuries, Satan was able to escape from Purgatory with the help of the Divine and allowed itself to be merged into the Root of Evil to strengthen her power.
