"Princess... The Extermination is a painful, yet necessary evil. Just because you cannot see that, doesn't mean it isn't serving a purpose. I know that isn't what you want to hear, but it's for the safety of not just the Heavens, but all Creation. I understand that you have experienced pain, and that you are angry. You are justified. But... you don't completely understand the severity of the situation. If only you knew what we were protecting Creation from, you would see things from our perspective. We only wish to protect Everything from destruction and corruption, at any cost."
— Sera to Charlie.

Princess Sera Seraphim of Heaven is a supporting character in Hazbin Hotel: Journey to the Light.

She serves as a supporting character in Chapter 5 and one of the two deuteragonists (alongside Saint Peter) of Chapter 5.5/Holy Hell.

She is a responsible Seraph princess, the new Chieftess of Justice, the chorister of God's choir, and the elder sister of the Seraphim family, a royal choir of Heaven that works directly below Metatron, the Speaker of God. A firm believer in the order of Heaven, Sera assumed many of her father's responsibilities in his stead as the Head Seraph, making her one of the most powerful and influential angels in Heaven. She works in God's choir to sing the praises of all of Heaven's idols, and took on a divine duty to ensure the protection and sanctity of Heaven and Creation at all costs.

Despite her good intentions, Sera has a cowardly streak and can be a bit of a control freak, to the extent of sanctioning the annual Extermination out of fear that the Root of Evil would grow too powerful from sinners' sins, and even limiting the power of her youngest sister, Serenity, out of fear of her becoming like Lucifer.

However, upon venturing into Hell and finally listening to her sister, Sera witnessed the goodness within sinners for herself. Through Serenity, she realized she had been holding herself and Heaven back out of fear and an overemphasis on justice. She relinquished her position as Head Seraph and bestowed it to Serenity, before assuming Adina's former position as Chieftess of Justice following the latter's death, determined to atone for all the souls that were erased partially because of her while still grappling with the potential fears of her newfound compassion being taken advantage of, or the alternative methods not being enough...

Holy Hell[]

In "See You in Heaven", Sera joins Serenity and Saint Peter in welcoming a new winner, Joe, to his grand entrance into the celestial realm. She witnesses the joyous welcome orchestrated by Saint Peter and the enchanting tour of Heaven led by Peter and Serenity, showcasing its wonders to Joe.

Later that night, Sera is called to Heaven's Courtroom for a meeting with Adina, the Chieftess of the Heavenly Court whom Sera seems to have a history with. Upon her arrival and being greeted by the cheerful, cloying, and goofy Adina, Sera's demeanor is a mix of annoyance and obligation, tolerating Adina's antics as she draws out the introductions. Getting the business, Adina brings up Fitch's report about Sera and Serenity canceling the annual cleanse, questioning both of the Seraphim sisters' judgment. Sera defends their decision, citing the possibility of redemption and that it was in the angels' good will to welcome redemption. Adina challenges her, suggesting Sera has been influenced by her sister and Charlie, and warns of the consequences of failure. Sera stands firm, asserting her belief in redemption and her commitment to the mission. Despite Adina's skepticism, Sera remains resolute, determined to prove the value of her decision. She refuses to be seen as easily manipulated by the chieftess and reaffirms her faith in her judgment and the mission's importance.

The next day, Sera's attention is drawn to the pressing issues discussed during a meeting with Saint Peter, Leo Lightheart, and Serenity in one of Heaven's sanctums. With Azrael being removed from Heaven, they must address internal challenges, reassign Exorcists, and deal with Heaven's apparent and dire prayer system malfunction, preventing the angels of Heaven from performing miracles. Sera makes the severity of the situation very clear, telling the three that if angels are unable to perform miracles through humanity's prayers, Earth will be surely doomed. Despite the challenges, Peter and Serenity pledge to restore harmony to Heaven, with Peter expressing his determination to make a difference, albeit with a touch of humor. Sera observes Peter's confidence and ambition, emphasizing his leadership in their mission to revolutionize Heaven, although they are united in their efforts. She sees them descend hand in hand, the weight of her decisions and Adina's previous words still fresh in her mind, planting seeds of doubt.

In "Exorcises in Redemption", at night, within the serene halls of Seraphim Palace, Sera diligently tends to sacred scriptures until the arrival of Serenity, looking fatigued with disheveled hair. Serenity collapses face-first onto a nearby couch in a comedically exhausted way, visibly drained. Despite being very busy, Sera pauses her duties to check on Serenity, sitting next to her and inquiring about her youngest sister's well-being, prompting a candid discussion about Serenity's myriad concerns, primarily centered on the reformation of the Exorcists. Acknowledging the disruptive influence of the freed Exorcists on Heaven's society, Sera expresses genuine concern about the potential repercussions of their unchecked actions, not wanting them to harm or end up killing any denizens of Heaven. She cautions Serenity about the grave consequences, including the risk of expulsion from Heaven. Sera reassures Serenity of her reluctance to take extreme measures, yet stresses the importance of integrating the Exorcists back into society. Giving Serenity a week to accomplish this task, Sera departs, leaving Serenity to grapple with the weight of her newfound responsibility.

Personality[]

"Oh, fuck me..."
— Sera's catchphrase whenever something goes awry, usually accompanied by her facepalming.

Sera is calm, realistic, and responsible, carrying the weight of her leadership in Heaven at all times, and feeling the constant pressure of doing what is right by her kingdom. She has the attitude of a strict, overworked, tired mother who is done with everyone's bullshit, and despite being constantly under stress, she keeps her emotions in control with a regal and poised demeanor, though this veil of tranquility can slip in minor ways whenever things go massively awry. She is a perfectionist and seems to always be busy, and is not afraid to give other people work as well. Additionally, she has a deep affinity for music and the arts and indulges in poetry on her spare time.

In her interactions, Sera demonstrates a strong sense of decorum and respect, especially in the presence of figures of authority like, such as the Queen of Heaven, Asherah. She often begins conversations with a respectful bow and formal address, prompting Serenity and Asherah herself that she does not need to be so formal. Later, she struggled and strained herself to call Asherah by her preferred nickname "Asha", as opposed to the Queen of Heaven's honorifics such as "Your Holiness", as if trying to be casual and informal physically pains her.

Going in hand with her formal personality and value in decorum, Sera is also a prude; she strongly dislikes pornography (or any display of sexual gratification), outright calling it the work of the Devil when Angel Dust briefly showed her his work in a porno mag.

Despite this, Sera can show a more playful side when pushed to it; while meeting the sinners at the Hazbin Hotel, she found amusement in Baxter and Sir Pentious' awkward attempts at greeting her, with Baxter exaggerating his achievements, while Pentious stumbled over his words due to his infatuation with her. Describing them as "weird, but a fascinating type of weird," before she granted them permission to continue speaking. She can also be pushed to snarky and light-hearted jabs at Serenity, albeit in a more reserved manner compared to her sister. She showed a sense of humor and a willingness to engage in sisterly teasing with Serenity while remaining mindful of their surroundings, reminding Serenity of the appropriateness of their actions in the Queen's presence.

Although Sera may appear aloof and distant at times, her love for her family and her people runs deep, compelling her to take extreme measures to safeguard Heaven from malevolent forces. Despite her seemingly cold demeanor, she harbors a fiercely protective instinct towards her youngest sister, Serenity, prioritizing her well-being and shielding her from harm, both physical and emotional, despite the fights, bickering, and conflicts that arise between them. Adina has even remarked that, despite Sera's warnings to Serenity about the risks of falling from grace, she firmly believes that Sera would never allow such a fate to befall her sister. In fact, Adina asserted her belief that Sera would willingly fall alongside Serenity if it ever came to that.

Even though Sera typically carries herself with a serious mind, she frequently finds herself in comically absurd and bizarre scenarios, maintaining her stoic composure amidst the surrounding chaos. Her deadpan reactions often result in utterly hilarious situations. Moreover, Sera possesses a subtly sarcastic demeanor and a profoundly dry wit. For instance, when Charlie delivered an impassioned speech about her hotel and faith in sinners, Sera was taken aback and mistook Charlie's speech for a sales pitch, offering a genuine compliment of her "monologue" before redirecting the conversation back to her mission of recollecting Heaven's Light, rather than indulging in a stay at the hotel.

Initially, Sera seemed to have a distaste towards demons that bordered on hatred. She considered demons to be evil, without conscience and corrupt by nature and found the possibility of noble demons existing to be mildly humorous. She reacted with cold indifference upon discovering a town in Hell that was ravaged by Leviathan's flood, using it in an attempt to teach Serenity a lesson that demons were purely evil even to their own kind. When Serenity and Leo Lightheart helped restore the town to how it was before, Sera was certain the demons were taking advantage of their charity and was speechless when the demon population did not turn on Serenity and instead looked ended up looking up to her. At one point, Charlie even accused Sera and the angels of being xenophobic, insisting that they would never let a redeemed sinner past the gates of Heaven. Despite Charlie having an outburst and even nearly attacking Sera, the seraphim remained cordial and sympathized with Charlie's pain, before reiterating her past belief that once a human soul has fell into the clutches of Evil, they cannot escape.

Sera is incredibly organized, almost obsessively so - and it is difficult for her to relax when there is work to be done. This, coupled with her experience makes her the most capable of her sisters and one of the most able of the Seraphim, if not any angel in Heaven.

Ultimately, Sera's greatest weakness is her cowardice and traditionalist ways. Much like Heaven's other higher angels, she is so terrified of the possibility that sinners will feed the Root of Evil and allow her to break free from her prison that it makes her blind to the more peaceful, alternative solution of redeeming sinners so that they can ascend to Heaven. Therefore, she agreed with Michael and Azrael's admittedly quicker and easier solution of destroying their souls and severing their connection to the Root of Evil. In another case, despite knowing of Azrael's many wrongdoings simply because of his royal title as a member of the Morningstar family. She refused to do anything about the archangel banishing Lukewarm winners, despite outranking him in Heaven's hierarchy.

Sera's views on sinners and even Heaven and its orders were changed during the War in Hell, where she saw first-hand the good sinners were capable of; the sinners of the hotel being willing to die to protect Manco, Sir Pentious' attempted sacrifice which prompted Cherri Bomb and Baxter to risk their lives to save him, and magical images of all the good the Hazbin crew have done for both Hell and each other, as well as Lux - the Holy Spirit itself - stating sinners could be redeemed. Following Azrael's defeat, she banished him from Heaven, cancelled the Extermination and made a deal with Charlie, decreeing that if she could redeem at least one sinner before the time of the next Extermination, the cleanse would be ended permanently.

Upon returning to Heaven, Sera grappled with the consequences of her actions and beliefs. Initially believing in the irredeemable nature of those in Hell, she had witnessed Azrael's transformation and questions her decision to let the archangel perform the Extermination. She contemplated the changing nature of Heaven, questioning its traditional judgments and the possibility of redemption for sinners. Seeing the good within sinners, caused her to question her role in destroying souls, and led to her wondering if Heaven's ideals are flawed. Ultimately, she realizes the need to adapt and change with the shifting dynamics much like Serenity had always done, seeking forgiveness from Seraphiel for her close-minded cowardice and seeking ways to save souls rather than condemn them.

Appearance[]

Sera is a 12'4 seraph angel with a grey complexion, sporting hair resembling a bird's feathers that transitions to a subdued blue hue at the ends. Her sky-blue eyes are accentuated by thick eyeliner and purple eyeshadow. Six angelic wings grace her back. She adorns herself in a long-sleeved dress featuring white accents on the wrists and shoulders, a grey mid-section, and a greyish-blue skirt adorned with intricate grey crystal designs.

Powers and Abilities[]

Natural Powers[]

  • Angelic Transformation: Sera is capable of shifting into a more alien and Lovecraftian Full Angel Form, becoming surrounded by disembodied eyes and engulfed in holy fire.
  • Flight: Sera possesses six angelic wings that allow her to fly and hover in the air.
  • Healing: Like all angels, Sera has supernatural healing abilities, allowing her to heal other beings of their injuries and cleanse them of sicknesses.
  • Pyrokinesis: Sera can conjure and summon extremely potent holy pyre in the form of flames or meteorites, all of which are capable of devastating entire landscape and bringing complete destruction upon those who push her to the point of anger. She is also immune to holy fire and can even engulf herself in it.

Unique Powers[]

  • Angelic Power: As the eldest child of Seraphiel and a seraph angel, Sera is one of the most powerful angels within Heaven's angelic order.
    • Conjuration: Sera can summon white orbs that can display the image of different locations, allowing her to watch over other worlds and dimensions.
    • Omnificence: Sera, being one of the most formidable angels, possesses mastery over the ability to create nearly anything she desires, to the extent of forming humans from the dust of the earth.
    • Scrying: Sera is capable of watching other dimensions through magical mirror images or white orbs with the ability to project images of various locations within their spheres. This extraordinary capability enables her to vigilantly observe and oversee other worlds and dimensions.
    • Supernatural Voice: As a seraph, Sera's vocals are enhanced, allowing her to speak and especially sing at a supernatural level. This allows her to project her singing across Heaven in order to sing the praises of God and Heaven's leadership. She can also produce devastating shockwaves by screaming.
    • Teleportation: Sera exhibits teleportation abilities through two distinct methods. The first involves the angels' conventional teleportation using light, while the second involves dematerializing through fire at the departure point and reappearing from the same element at her chosen destination.

Abilities[]

  • Authority and Influence: As the foremost active seraph in Heaven, Sera commands great respect and wields significant influence among the majority of Heaven's inhabitants, only below the Speaker of God. Her power extends to authority over the seraphim population, establishing her as the ruler of Seraphim Square and holding sway within the Heavenly Courts. Despite her elevated status in Heaven's hierarchy, Sera frequently found herself following the orders of Azrael, a choice driven by her profound respect for the Morningstar family. However, she eventually discovered the strength to defy the archangel.
  • Intimidation: Sera is capable of scaring others by transforming into her eldritch Full Angel Form.
  • Musical Talents: Sera is a supernaturally gifted singer, and is regarded by many as the most gifted singer in all of Heaven. She can also play nearly all instruments with masterful skill.

Weaknesses[]

  • Compliance with Heaven's hierarchy (formerly): Owing to Sera's conformist convictions that the established order of Heaven should remain unchanged, coupled with her profound respect for the Morningstar family, she refrained from opposing Azrael's tyranny and permitted the archangel to act without hindrance, despite her higher rank in Heaven's hierarchy. However, a pivotal shift occurred when Charlie and Serenity revealed to her the profound horrors of the Extermination and demonstrated that even sinners in Hell could undergo reform. This revelation prompted Sera to realize the necessity of abolishing the cleanse, leading her to deeply regret not taking action sooner.

Relationships[]

Family[]

Asherah[]

Asherah is Sera's queen and creator. Like all Heavenborn angels, Sera was created by Asherah. Sera is deeply respectful and loyal to Asherah, appreciating her queen for not only keeping Heaven's people safe and alive, but creating her beloved little sisters.

Whenever Sera interacts with Asherah personally, she is deeply respectful of her queen, despite Asherah's attempts to set a more casual tone. During Gabriel's briefly return to Heaven, Asherah gifted both Sera and Serenity with gold roses to go in their hair, and insisted upon them calling her "Asha", a nickname her friends refer to her by.

While Serenity was busy meeting Gabriel, Sera confided in Asherah about her guilt and doubts over her role in the Extermination. Trusting Asherah, Sera revealed inner conflict about her actions and the harshness of Heaven’s judgment. The Queen of Heaven offered Sera a safe space for her emotional exploration, before encouraging Sera to not bottle up her motions, reflect on her choices, and learn from her mistakes to properly atone.

Seraphiel[]

Seraphiel is Sera's father. Sera's relationship with Seraphiel is one of familial love and respect, but also full of differences in perspective. While Sera acknowledges her father's esteemed position and occasionally questions his priorities, she is moved by his devotion to family over duties. She highly respects her father and often feels crushed by the weight of living to him as a leader, despite his every confidence in her.

Despite their differing views on the significance of Hell and sinners, Seraphiel encourages Sera to embrace compassion and openness, especially towards her youngest sister, Serenity, whom he believes will bring about positive change despite her radical ideals not aligning with Sera. Through an early interaction from her childhood, Sera learned from her father's wisdom and was entrusted with the responsibility of caring for her siblings.

After her return to Heaven and the realization that sinners were capable of redemption, Sera grappled with thoughts of Seraphiel, aware that her father would disapprove of her narrow-mindedness and her role in the heavenly cleanse. Privately, she pleaded for his forgiveness and vowed to rectify the state of Heaven's order to atone for her actions.

Serenity[]

"Serenity is... Difficult. She lacks discipline, and is often erratic and irrational. And yet, she has a kindness, a gentleness, and a love for all things that I often find lacking in myself. I know she is capable of greatness, if she simply applied herself. I believe she will learn in time... we can only guide her. For better or for worse it is ultimately up to her as she must be on this journey herself. But I am confident in her as my sister and think she will one day make a great leader and queen if she learns patience and discipline."
— Sera about Serenity.

Serenity is Sera's younger sister. Sera's relationship with Serenity is complex, but the two clearly love each other dearly, with Sera seeming to be the closest to Serenity out of all her sisters, even often referring to Serenity as "Dearest Sister". Despite acknowledging Serenity's challenges with discipline and her occasional emotional behavior, Sera sees her sister's inherent kindness, gentleness, and love for all beings as admirable qualities. Sera believes in Serenity's potential for greatness if she commits herself and learns to apply patience and discipline. While acknowledging that Serenity must navigate her journey independently, Sera remains confident in her sister's ability to become a remarkable leader and, eventually, a queen with all the guidance and growth that comes with.

When they were younger, Sera actively denied Serenity any real power within Heaven's upper echelon of authority, fearing that her younger sister's ambitions would put her on the same road as Lucifer.

Sera often grapples with the challenges of caring for Serenity and her apprehensions about her youngest sister potentially succumbing to temptation and falling from grace. Despite serving as Serenity's guardian, Sera strives to maintain fairness and trust by occasionally yielding to Serenity's wishes. This includes granting Charlie an opportunity to present her ideas of redemption to Metatron, as requested by Serenity.

Despite their status as Seraphim, Sera and Serenity have very relatable dynamics of typical siblings. Sera often has to reign Serenity in when she gets too excited. In moments of intense discord, they engage in heated exchanges, complete with shouting matches, eye rolls, door slams, and pillow-screaming sessions. Yet, amidst these conflicts, they still love each other, and despite enduring significant family trials, their bond endures, demonstrating an unbreakable commitment to each other's well-being.

Sera is deeply protective of Serenity, cares very much about her, and often tries to bring her sister back down to earth and make her see things realistically and not ideally, since she does not want Serenity to get hurt by harsh realities. She is not afraid to bluntly scold Serenity for making rash decisions or errors in judgement, such as when she chastised her sister for getting the denizens of Heaven's hopes up during the Celebration of God, though she eased up a little bit when she saw how upset Serenity was. When Alastor put Serenity in danger by having her vie against Vox's pet shark, Vark, for Angel Dust's soul contract, Sera was furious, promising that Alastor would pay dearly if Serenity was harmed in any way.

Following the War in Hell, Sera's views on sinners were changed by witnessing their capacity for good first-hand, and came to accept Serenity's views, repairing their somewhat estranged relationship. In the aftermath of the war, Serenity expressed her desire to bring love and hope to those who feel sad or hopeless, drawing inspiration from her father's analogy of her being the "sun of Heaven." Though she admitted to not fully grasp its meaning, she interprets it as her bringing light and joy to those in Heaven. Sera proudly affirmed her sister's radiant presence, acknowledging her as a symbol of warmth and hope capable of bridging Heaven and Hell. She recognizes Serenity's mission to spread joy and optimism, even in the bleakest moments, and encourages her to continue illuminating the lives of others. Together, they embarked on a journey to heal and restore harmony in Heaven, now seeing eye-to-eye one with one another.

Despite Sera warning Serenity about her potentially becoming a fallen angel, Adina has remarked that she firmly believes Sera would never allow such a fate to befall her sister. Furthermore, Adina suggests that if it were to happen, Sera would willingly choose to accompany Serenity into the depths of Hell rather than abandon her to face the consequences alone. At one point, Sera said that she would give anything to keep Serenity from harm.

Following the cancellation of the Exterminations, Sera and her little sister's relationship became the most positive and wholesome it had ever been. Sera stopped hiding things from Serenity, letting her little sister know about Heaven's prayer problem and allowing her to make moves to help it. Sera also sat down with Serenity after seeing her sister ragged and worried about being unable to rehabilitate the bloodthirsty Exterminators, and provided Serenity with ample time to improve them. Sera also showed a more playful side during her and Serenity's meeting with Asherah, albeit in a more reserved manner compared to her sister. She engaged in light-hearted banter, showing a sense of humor and a willingness to engage in sisterly teasing. However, she remains mindful of their surroundings, reminding Serenity of the appropriateness of their actions in the Queen's presence.

Later, when Serenity and her friends foiled Adina and Fitch's "holy crusade", Sera came to truly trust in Serenity's growth, going as far as to step down as Head Seraph and give her title to Serenity, fulfilling her sister's dream of moving up in the hierarchy and finally trusting her with power. Shortly after, Sera even sought out reassurance from Serenity about her efforts and abilities as a leader and sister, taking responsibility for all the human souls lost in a genocide she sanctioned. In response, Serenity praised Sera's strength and care, but pointed out her lack of compassion and patience with the growth of others, emphasizing the need for empathy towards all souls, including sinners. She encourages Sera to be less fearful and more willing to take risks, suggesting that Sera could learn from her, which Sera emotionally agreed with.

Others[]

Adina[]

Sera and Adina first met in their respective childhoods, following the War in Hell. Sera happened upon Adina, crying alone in the war-ravaged Heaven after her family had died in the conflict. Sera kneeled down and comforted Adina, pulling her close into a hug and allowing her a shoulder to cry on - a spark of love and unity in a realm torn apart by war and betrayal. Afterward, Sera and her father, Seraphiel, welcomed Adina into their palace, treating her as family and providing her with love and a home. Despite their kindness, Adina's intense hatred for sin and desire for vengeance from the war clouded her perception, leading her to overlook, unappreciate, and eventually betray the trust and care shown by Sera and her family.

In the present, Sera and Adina were much more distant; Sera respected Adina's position as chieftess, but was disgusted by Adina's methods of dealing with sinners, though she bit her tongue to prevent any in-fighting and drama. Despite their similar dispositions and emphasis on order, the two esteemed angels' interactions were filled with tension and disagreement, with Sera seeming easily irritated by Adina's attitude and cloying. Adina seemed to view Sera with a mixture of condescension and skepticism, and often belittled her decisions and questioned her judgment. Her comments suggested a lack of trust in Sera's abilities and implied that she saw Sera as naive or easily influenced, particularly by her sister and Charlie. On the other hand, Sera responded to Adina's remarks with a combination of annoyance and determination. She stood firm in her beliefs and decisions, refusing to be swayed by Adina's skepticism. Despite Adina's attempts to undermine her confidence, Sera remained steadfast in her commitment to her principles and the mission she believed in.

Following the Extermination's cancellation, Sera began to doubt the justice of their actions and fearing that her leadership has caused irreversible harm to innocent souls. She questioned if the sinners they destroyed might have changed for the better, expressing deep regret and moral conflict over the role she played in their demise. Adina, however, was steadfast in her belief that sinners were irredeemable and condemned Sera’s doubts as misplaced. She advised Sera to accept her actions as just, reinforcing the notion that transgression merit eternal punishment. She also urged Sera to look forward, bear her burdens, and ignore the guilt plaguing her.

Despite their differences, both seem to be driven by a sense of duty and responsibility to their roles in Heaven and are united in bringing their senses of "order" to Heaven.

However, their relationship further deteriorated when Adina announced to all of Heaven that she had banished Serenity. Sera, in particular, was incensed. After Adina's announcement, Sera instantly confronted Adina, deeply upset over her little sister's fate and demanding a further explanation. Sera, using her authority as Chieftess of Justice, challenged and condemned Adina's handling of Serenity's trial, suspecting foul play. Despite her initial fury, Sera showed concern for Adina upon noticing her troubled state. She tried to understand what changed in Adina, only to be met with a cryptic warning. Adina's response only unsettled Sera further, prompting her to withdraw with a scowl, leaving Adina to reflect on her actions and their consequences.

Charlie Magne[]

When Sera first encountered Charlie, she harbored doubts about the princess and her possession of Heaven's Light. Initially prepared to reclaim the Light forcefully on her mission, her resolve shifted upon Serenity's intervention and the enlightening discourse from Lux, the Light's rejuvenated form. Sera was very confused, so Charlie elucidated the situation, with Serenity corroborating her account and asserting Charlie's inherent goodness as the recipient of Heaven's Light. Thus, albeit reluctantly, Sera acquiesced to hear Charlie's proposals for redemption, though she emphatically asserted her intention to reclaim Heaven's Light should Charlie fail to convince her otherwise.

After their initial encounter, Charlie took Sera on a comprehensive tour of the hotel, unveiling the diverse array of sinners inhabiting its halls. Throughout the tour, Charlie showcased the positive impact these individuals had made, regaling Sera with tales of their benevolent deeds and presenting the hotel's photo album brimming with images capturing their community service and activities. Witnessing these displays of goodwill, Sera's initial skepticism began to wane, replaced by a growing admiration for Charlie's noble efforts. However, lingering doubts persisted within her, particularly regarding the sinners' true intentions, compounded by her allegiance to Alastor, the Radio Demon, a notorious figure within Hell's hierarchy.

Sera and Charlie's relationship was fraught with tension and ideological differences. Charlie, disillusioned with angels like Sera and deeply affected by the suffering of demons, expresses her anger and frustration towards Heaven's indifference. Sera, while acknowledging Charlie's pain, firmly defends Heaven's actions as necessary for the greater good, despite the evident suffering it causes. Despite their opposing views, there's a sense of understanding and empathy between them, with Sera trying to convey the gravity of their mission to protect Creation while Charlie grapple with her own experiences and perceptions of injustice.

However, during the War in Hell, Sera's perspectives on sinners and even Heaven's mandates underwent a significant shift. Witnessing firsthand the altruistic deeds of sinners, particularly evident in their willingness to sacrifice themselves for others, such as the case of Manco and Sir Pentious, profoundly impacted her beliefs. Additionally, she observed acts of heroism from individuals like Cherri Bomb and Baxter, who risked their lives to save others. The Hazbin crew's collective efforts, documented through magical imagery, further reinforced Sera's newfound understanding of the potential for redemption among sinners. Lux, embodying the Holy Spirit, affirming the possibility of sinners' redemption, added weight to her evolving perspective. Following Azrael's banishment and the cancellation of the cleanse, Sera brokered a deal with Charlie. She promised to halt the cleanse permanently if Charlie could successfully redeem at least one sinner before the next year. With a handshake and mutual smiles, they sealed their agreement, leaving Charlie grateful for Sera's decision.

Alastor[]

"Alastor: Hahaha! Don't get yourself into such a tizzy, princess!
Sera: (her eyes narrow into slits; dead serious) I assure you, I have never been 'in a tizzy'.
"
— Alastor and Sera's dynamic.

Knowing him by reputation, Sera acknowledges Alastor's cunning and skill as a demon, but condemns him for his evil deeds, considering him a contradiction to Charlie, who claims to be on Heaven's side. She expresses grudging respect for his abilities but finds associating with him to be morally questionable due to his propensity for causing harm to the innocent and faithful.

Alastor, playfully offended by Sera's skepticism regarding his capacity for good, devised a plan to prove her wrong. Taking Sera and Serenity, both magically disguised as demons, to Klub Kaiju, he orchestrated a magnificently dastardly deal with the Vees, challenging them for Angel Dust's soul contract. He arranged a contest between Serenity and Vox's formidable shark, Vark, proposing that if Serenity emerged victorious, Valentino would be forced to relinquish Angel's soul contract. Sera, outraged by Alastor's decision to endanger her sister, seethed with anger as they watched the showdown unfold. Despite her threats of vengeance if Serenity were harmed, Alastor remained nonchalant, even making light of the situation. In the end, Serenity triumphed over Vark, freeing Angel Dust and triumphantly demonstrating Alastor's capacity for "good." However, Sera remained unconvinced, seeing Alastor's willingness to endanger Serenity as a complete contradiction to any positive actions he may have taken.

Quotes[]

Chapter 5[]

"Serenity my dear, you’ve already made such a strong impact. In terms of change, who can put a time limit on that? No one thing will suddenly change the Universe. It’s the sum of many influences, of which you are certainly one. Keep influencing and I am certain you will go far."
— Sera reassuring Serenity.
"Azrael: Hiya, girls!
Serenity: (she frowns at seeing Azrael and her halo flickers) H-Hey, Azrael...
Sera: (to Serenity, hushed) Serenity... (she bows her head to Azrael) Hello, Archangel Azrael. How goes the arrangements for the Extermination this year?
Azrael: (he yawns) Ooh, I dunno. Lute's on it. I'm thinkin' of having a gig or two up in Charity. Gotta keep the hype going, y'know what I mean? Oh, yeah and, uh- (a cherub flies down and hands Azrael a glowing scroll which he gives to Serenity) Sugar Tits, I need ya to fly this over to Pete.
Serenity: (she reads over it) Are these...new rules for saints?
Azrael: Ay, you know me. I'm not a rules guy! But... fucking pineapple on pizza? Eugh! That's so- That should be a CARDINAL sin, y'know? Write that on a motherfucking stone.
Serenity: I just think some of the new regulations are really, really strict... You know, for a place that's supposed to be a paradise, it's pretty boring around here sometimes. Wouldn't you like to see just a bit of excitement? Diversity is the spice of life, you know, and everything here is so.... samey.
Azrael: (he groans and begins tuning his guitar) Ah, shit. Sera, would you do the honors?
Sera: (to Serenity) Heaven is a place of peace and joy for those of noble character. This is not a playground for your amusement, Serenity... Perhaps there is some wisdom to what you are saying, but the only excitement that we of Heaven need is that which we gain from serving God and spreading the light of his glory. But tell me, what do you propose to solve our diversity problem?
Serenity: Maaaybe we could make it easier again for souls to enter Heaven? It feels like our standards have gone up to wazo and we only get so few saints a day... Maybe Hell wouldn't have such a horrible overpopulation problem if we just... Made the road to Heaven easier? (to Azrael) And, Archangel Azrael, I don't wanna upset you or anything, but... I don't really understand the cleanse.
Azrael: (picking his teeth with the holy knife in the head of his guitar) What's there to understand? Sinners did a bad thing, now it's purgin' time; pretty simple shit.
Serenity: (her wings briefly flare up) N- No... No, it's not like that. Sinners can repent, they can make changes, they can find virtue and deserve a chance!
Azrael: Whoa! Whoa! Hold your fucking horses, sugar tits! Where the fuck is this coming from?! Sinners don't deserve anything but the heads of our spears. Have you forgotten your place? (Azrael points at the Morningstar crest on his wall) You see this symbol? I decide what's cool and what's not. And sinning is most certainly NOT cool.
Serenity: I... I can't just accept that... They're still human! They deserve a chance... They... (her words trail off, her thoughts getting all jumbled) S- Sinning is not always a choice... I- It's more complex than black and white...
Sera: (she makes Serenity face her) Serenity! (she stares menacingly at her startled sister before softening up and putting both hands on Serenity's shoulders) We've been over this... I am open to the notion of lowering our standards, but there are no 'noble demons'. (laughs slightly) What even is that? A demon's very existence is unholy and evil. You'd be wise to take note; It would do you no good to be caught with these thoughts.
Serenity: (pulls away from Sera) The only evil I see is what we've been allowing the Heavenly Host to do to their kind. You are willing to let demons be slaughtered by our own soldiers by the billions in Hell every year, even the ones who have done no wrong! There could be sinners and demons who just got a bad deal and rotten luck, and yet you think we should leave them be killed? Don't you see who the real monsters are?
Sera: (enraged) How dare you! You are the one who wants to forgive the unforgivable,to allow monsters to enter our kingdom! This is why you are not ready to take responsibility! I refuse to let you allow evil to infect the heavens! And if you think we should allow that... Then perhaps you don't belong here.
Serenity: (on the verge of tears) YOU'RE SUCH A JERK, SERA!!! (flies away, bawling into her hands; Sera shows a hint of guilt on her face for a couple seconds before silently resuming her duties)
Azrael: (laughing) Hah! What the fuck was that? What an emotional wreck! (he snorts as Sera give him a deadpan expression) How can that little lambkin be your fucking sister? Oh, man, that was hilarious! She's worse than that Chodey Foster c*nt. Like, cry me a river, bitch.
Sera: That 'emotional wreck' is my sister; and she's an excellent girl, who deserves the utmost respect. She's still quite young, and she'll learn to see our purpose with time. Do you not hold the same thoughts of your son?
Azrael: My 'SON'?! (Azrael laughs) You mean Azuriel, I assume? Psh, he ain't my son. Nope, until he learns how to rain sweet holy lightning from an electric guitar, he's just a little runt I'm stuck with. He's a whinin', cryin' little bitch, he ain't nothing but a hound dog, honestly. Sometimes I wish I had a daughter instead... Because it'd be more satisfying to beat her if she talked back! HAHAHAHA!!! (Azrael looks at the Exorcists) LAUGH!!!! (he continues laughing loudly as the Exorcists awkwardly chuckle in response)
"
— Azrael's meeting with the Seraphim sisters.
"Sera: Father, shouldn't you be carrying out your duties?
Seraphiel: Hmm? Do you not want to meet your sisters?
Sera: You're a salient figure in our society, just two ranks behind the Heavenly Father. It seems rather capricious.
Seraphiel: (chuckles with an eyebrow raised) Someone's been fraternizing with Nostradamus. Ease your mind, dear, all my chores for the day have been completed. Besides, I don't set aside my family to make room for my duties, I set aside my duties to make room for my family. (he taps his cane, causing the cloud below him and Sera to begin flying towards the Seraphim castle in Seraphim Square; the scene cuts to him and Sera entering a room filled with floating stars and several baby cribs)
Sera: They are sleeping... We shouldn't disturb them.
Seraphiel: Oh, they won't even notice! (he flies over to the baby cribs, laughing as Sera slowly approaches the cribs; he holds up two babies) Serella and Serena! Twins. (he chuckles, setting them down gently and holding up another baby) Seraphina! (the baby wakes up, crying and flying around rabidly, engulfing herself in flames) WO-HO! (he chases Seraphina around the room) Maybe you were right, Sera! (Sera facepalms as Seraphiel catches Seraphina, setting her back in her crib before tapping on a passing star, which begins to play music, soothing the baby down as her flame dissipate; whispering) Something tells me she'll have a passion for fashion! (he giggles, holds up another baby) Serendipity! You can rest easy, Sera, 'cuz if anything is out of place, she'll be the first to notice. (he laughs and sets Serendipity down) And the last born... (he holds up a newborn Serenity as Sera tilts her head) Serenity. (he goes to set her down)
Sera: Can I... Please hold her, father?
Seraphiel: (he faces Sera) Of course you shall. (he hands Serenity over to Sera, who cradles Serenity and stares at her) What's this? (he puts his hand to his head and begins humming) Ah! I sense she will try to make Heaven and Hell equally blessed and sacred for all. (he claps his hands and giggles) Oooh, goodie!!
Sera: Hell...? Father, why should we be concerned for what transpires in Hell? It's not in our position to look out for little demons.
Seraphiel: Just because it's not our prerogative, does that mean we should kick up our feet in our crystal towers and do nothing?
Sera: With all due respect, I believe that we have more important things to do beyond giving demons the benefit of the doubt.
Seraphiel: There is some truth to that. But, sometimes, should we see a way to make life and afterlife more fulfilling to others, we should act. We may never know if there are any sinners and Hellborn willing to repent. That's for them to decide. (he approaches Sera and Serenity as Serenity coos and snuggles up to Sera) Serenity will do things that will test you. She may even drive you crazy! (chuckles) But... She will always have the best intentions. Take care of your sisters, Sera. Never let anything happen to them.
"
— Seraphiel showing Sera her newborn sisters in a flashback.
"Serenity: Wha- what happened here? (her voice quivers, fighting back tears)
Leo Lightheart: Well, I'm no Benjamin Brainiac, but it looks like their town was destroyed!
Serenity: What kind of monsters would do such a thing?! I- We need to do something... We can't just let those people suffer!
Sera They're demons, Serenity, not 'people'. Heaven needs us. We are here to find the Light of Heaven, not give insignificant creatures of sin the benefit of the doubt. If we start, where does it end? I'll tell you; You'll end up like Lucifer; fallen.
Serenity: (to Sera) Those are people's lives, their homes! Everything they spent years and years building, only for some monster that swooped in an took everything they ever had! It's not faiiirrr! (begins sobbing) I want to help them so bad...
Sera: And what will that lead to? Them taking advantage of your kindness before stabbing you in the back?
Serenity: I don't care if they take advantage of my kindness! If it means I can help them, I will. We're angels, protecting people in need is literally my job! (sniffles) Do we at least know what did this to them?
Leo Lightheart: (looks at the soil) Hmmm... (dips his finger in a puddle and licks it, tasting it thoroughly) Saltwater... A flood is my guess. Some big ol' snake that crawled outta the depths of Hades started a big ol' flood, killing every man, woman, and child who couldn't get to safety. Then the looters came through. These demons never stood a chance...
Serenity: (tears streaming down her face) H- How could they do this? Some monster just killed these people, destroyed lives, and then looters just kicked them while they're down for... For what?! Just so that they could have some stupid resources for themselves that they probably don't even need? What kind of monsters would do such a horrible thing to people who never hurt them?
Sera: Demons. Life has no value to demons. Their only purpose is to spread death and suffering, even to their own kind. This is just one of millions, if not billions examples of their evil. If they are so heartless to their own kind, how do you expect them to treat us, their natural enemy?
Serenity: ...Just because there's lives destroyed like this one, that means we're supposed to do nothing? We aren't their enemy? Why do you always think things should be the same?!
Sera: Serenity-
Serenity: If we don't do something, then it will only make things worse!!! (flies towards the town)
Sera: SERENITY! (whispering) Oh, fuck me... (facepalms and rubs her temples)
"
— Serenity and Sera's argument.
"Demons by their very nature are evil and corrupt. They are fallen creatures, those who turned away from what is good and just all to seek self-glorification and power at the cost of others' suffering. The thought of a good demon seems absurd... It is like asking if a rock could sprout wings and fly. Such things are simply against their very nature."
— Sera to Leo about demons.
"Lucifer is little more than a foul creature. In my eyes, nothing can justify what he has done. He is no more than a blasphemous fool in need of death. He had paradise, love and power, and threw it all away! And for what? To be equal to God? What a waste, all that potential."
— Sera about Lucifer.
"Serenity: (trying to keep up to Sera, who is flying towards the hotel with purpose) Please, Sera? Can't we even try to negotiate with them? I mean, I don't think the Light would let itself get held hostage at some demon hotel... We can just... talk it out and... Maybe this won't backfire like our deal with the Roman Empire...
Sera: (comically serious) We literally backfired ON the Roman Empire.
"
— Serenity and Sera's banter.
"Charlie: Ever since I was young, I always saw magic in sinners. This Hotel isn't just some place, but a movement for change. We aim to guide all sinners towards the path of righteousness and, with enough dedication and hard work, eventually ascend to Heaven! We encouraged to help one another, make positive changes to their lives, and become better people. I believe that all sinners can be redeemed, no matter how lost they seem or how long their path to Heaven may be. It is my dream to see my people have better afterlives, cuz I know they deserve it. And, hopefully, one day, they'll achieve true happiness.
Sera: (Sera looks extremely uncomfortable and completely confused from the speech; unironically) ...That was a very nice monologue and sales pitch. But, with respect, me and my fellows are not here to layabout at a demon hotel. We are here to recollect the Light of Heaven.
"
— Sera's comically confused reaction to Charlie's impassioned speech.
"Angel Dust: I'm sure yous guys up in Heaven got some fancy schmancy, dolled up, plastic supermodels, but ya don't got ME! How 'bout we fix that? The name's Angel Dust! Ain't seen my work? (he shows Sera a pornographic magazine) Now ya have!
Sera: (a horrified expression instantly appears on Sera's face; her pupils and irises shrink and her wings flare, glowing eyeballs appearing on her wings) What DEVILRY is this?!
Charlie: (scooting Angel away) ANYWAY....
"
— Angel and Sera meet.
"...Is this some sort of demonic mating ritual?"
— Sera upon seeing Niffty, Baxter and Pentious T-posing.
"Alastor: Alastor! (Alastor twirls his cane, offering a handshake to Sera) Pleasure to meet you. Quite a pleasure!
Sera: (Sera stares at him grudgingly) Radio Demon.
Alastor: (Alastor laughs, lowering his hand) Ah, I see you prefer to call me by the moniker adopted by those who aren't quite fond of me. I had a sneaking suspicion you didn't like me. Then again, you don't particularly like anyone, don't you? (His smile widens as Sera scowls at him) But, credit where it's due, you seem to have a mind for yourself, at least. It's a welcome change to have someone from the opposing side who isn't completely brainwashed by all that religious garbage. Ha-ha-ha-ha! You are quite the interesting creature...
Sera: As if you aren't brainwashed by some demonic influence. (her glare deepens at Alastor) I assure you, Radio Demon. No amount of repentance will get you past the pearly gates. I do not play these games.
Alastor: (Alastor and Mic both laugh uproariously, waving his hand in Sera's face) Oh, darling! Darling, darling, darling, darling- SWEETHEART!! Hahaha! (his voice is full of passive-aggressiveness) Fret not! I'm not planning on going anywhere near those gaudy 'pearly gates' of yours. ME, among those silly, drab little do-gooders... (the lights around him and Sera flicker) No... (he menacingly approaches Sera, who narrows her eyes and flares her wings, eyes appearing across her body) I intend to stay RIGHT WHERE I AM, take some pleasure out of my time down here, (he uses black tentacles to elevate himself to Sera's face) and bide my time until me and an old friend of ours can reclaim what you've KEPT from ME...
"
— Alastor and Sera meet.
"You are weird.... But a fascinating type of weird. I shall allow it."
— Sera to Baxter and Sir Pentious upon them introducing themselves to her.
"Are... NONE of you normal?"
— Sera during Charlie's tour of the hotel?
"Charlie: I know angels aren't used to Hell's brand of- (a chandelier falls behind Charlie) -...eccentricity... but I think everyone here has magic in them! But it's hard to show that magic and express themselves so freely in a place like Hell... So, I figured this hotel could be like a Heaven within Hell! A place to foster that magic and turn it into a new beginning! And that beginning starts in Heaven.
Sera: … I don’t even know how to respond to that. (Sera sighs and massages the headache she can feel starting to form; she closes her eyes for a bit, before opening them and noticing Charlie's positive, optimistic expression; she pauses, before shaking her head and continuing on) How do you have such optimism?
Charlie: Well... (she walks to the side of the balcony) I just think everyone can be a good person. It's just a matter of working out the issues that led to them sinning! I used to think puppies and rainbows were the key to helping sinners. And while it (with a cheeky grin) certainly helps... I've learned so many things about humans - their mistakes, their wrongdoings... but also the amazing things they've accomplished and the good they've done! Everyone deserves a second chance...no matter what they did! At least, I like to think so!
Sera: (Sera can’t help but think of how innocent and naive that view is, almost thinking it’s cute; she looks at Charlie with a mixture of pity and disappointment) Redemption... If only it were that simple.
"
— Sera and Charlie's conversation on the balcony.
"You claim to be on Heaven's side, and yet you ally yourself with the Radio Demon. An interesting contradiction, to say the least. I will give you this, Princess, he is a rather resourceful demon who, if he wasn't so thoroughly evil, would make an excellent ally. Be that as it may, his heinous atrocities are so blasphemous that even the saints and Heavenborn quiver at the mention of his name. He has great skill and talent, and I have some grudging respect for that. But, he has made it very clear that he has no intention of reforming himself nor the capacity to even perform good deeds. I find your credibility very questionable when you would associate with one who harms those who are innocent and faithful to God and the order of Heaven."
— Sera to Charlie.
"Sera: If anything happens to Serenity, Radio Demon... (Fire appears in Sera's eyes) I will raze the sinful flesh from your bones.
Alastor: (Alastor casually checks his nails) Come now, princess, smile! I believe your darling sister's in the groove on this one! The ends will justify the means. You of all people would agree with me... (Alastor snaps his head to Sera, his smile unhinged) RIGHT?
"
— Alastor and Sera.
"Charlie: I used to look up to Heaven, hoping that maybe, outside of the Exorcists, there were more angels that were willing to hear me out. (Charlie's powers flare as she glares furiously at Sera) All the people I've lost putting my faith in angels like you, Sera!
Sera: (she has a pained look on her face) I'm sorry for what you've lost, young one. As a princess myself, I understand how much you care for your loved ones and your people. But you must believe me-
Charlie: FUCK YOU!!! (her powers flare; Sera recoils as eyes appear on her wings, hair and attire) You're all just afraid of people different from you! Even if I managed to redeem a sinner, you would never let them past the gates! I've seen billions of innocent demons slaughtered every year! I saw a mother holding her butchered baby's remains! And you self-righteous bastards... YOU DON'T EVEN CARE! And why would you?! It's not like it's happening to your people, RIGHT?!
Serenity: (she gets in between Charlie and Sera) Charlie! (Charlie looks at Serenity, slowly snapping out of her anger) Please, not like this... (Lux descends and comfortingly nuzzles Charlie as the princesses fiery aura dissipates)
Sera: Princess... the Extermination is a painful, yet necessary evil. Just because you cannot see that doesn't mean it isn't serving a purpose. I know that isn't what you want to hear, but it's for the safety of not just the Heavens, but all Creation. (she hangs her head) I understand that you have experienced pain, and that you are angry. You are justified. But... you don't completely understand the severity of the situation. (her voice trembles with fear) If you knew what we were protecting Creation from... (cut to a flashback of a malevolent, rooted hand wrapping around the Earth) ...you would see things from our perspective. (cut back to present, Sera lifts her head to Charlie, sounding like she's fighting back tears) We only wish to protect Everything from destruction and corruption, at any cost.
"
— Sera and Charlie's confrontation.
"Serenity: Whenever people feel sad or hopeless, I want them to know that they're loved. One time, Dad said that I'm the sun of Heaven. I don't really understand what that means... But I like to think that it means I shine bright, right?
Sera: (she nods and smiles, taking Serenity's hands) Your light shines brightly, indeed, dearest sister. To be considered the sun of Heaven... what an extraordinary gift. I now see why father saw you as a beacon of warmth and hope to unite Heaven and Hell. It is your soul's mission in life to spread hope and happiness, to remind people that even in the darkest times, Heaven is with them. Keep shining bright, and may all who are downcast be warmed by your light. Come... We have much to repair up in Heaven.
"
— Serenity and Sera before returning to Heaven together.

Holy Hell[]

"Sera: (narrating) Angels are the guardians, warriors and messengers of goodness. We are made from the same matter that all celestial beings are forged from - pure Light.
Serenity: (also narrating) And star dust! Don't forget! Lotsa star dust!
Sera: Serenity...
Serenity: S- Sorry! Sorry.
Sera: Ahem... We are all children of God and Asherah, and as such, we serve as conduits between their will and humanity...
Serenity: My turn? Ahem-... We live in harmony and peace and dedicate ourselves to guiding human souls to Heaven! For in Heaven, every soul will live in grace, compassion, and mirth.
"
— Sera and Serenity in the opening narration of Holy Hell.
"Adina: Sera! You're looking as poised and pure as ever! (Adina sits down at a table as she uses magic pour glasses of tea that are neatly laid out on the table) Sit, dear princess, siiit!
Sera: (Sera's eyes flicker with mild annoyance as she sits across from Adina) Lady Adina... a bright ray of light as always, I suppose... and to what do I owe the pleasure?
Adina: (Adina loudly slurps her tea before neatly setting it down and cupping her hands with a beaming, cloying smile) Oh, I just wanted to discuss matters. I was passing by, checking up on things with the lower ranks, making sure the souls of Heaven are following the righteous path as laid out by the Lord, when Fitch told me something VERY interesting, indeed. You understand that I was a bit surprised... But you know how much I love surprises!
Sera: (Sera rolls her eyes, thinking this may have been a waste of time) ...Is this a social call, or are there matters? I'm sure you understand that as Head Seraph, I have many duties to oversee, and can't spare the time for such pleasantries.
Adina: (Adina leans forward with a malicious smirk, speaking with an extremely sarcastic intonation) Oh, I'm SORRY! You are so RIGHT! (she waves her hand) Oh, how foolish of me to presume that I as Chieftess of the Heavenly Court, Keeper of All Peace, et cetera et cetera, can interrupt the Princess of the Seraphim's busy schedule with my own affairs! I guess I was just overcome by the sheer joy of being in your presence. (Adina giggles, and then shifts her tone to a more stern, assertive manner) Anyhow, Fitch told me that you and your little sister cancelled the annual cleanse! ...It is true that you're ACTUALLY considering giving that Princess of Hell's circus the benefit of the doubt?
Sera: (Sera gets up from her seat and approaches a nearby window with her hands behind her back, looking down upon Heaven's bustling streets) It was a difficult decision, granted. But with the princess of Hell's proposal to grant sinners the possibility to enter into Heaven through redemption, I... (Sera pauses, as if not wanting to reveal even the small bits of doubt that she's been harboring for a while) ...Feel that it's the morally right thing to do, and one that the Heavenly Father would support.
Adina: (Adina smiles and uses her wings to fly behind Sera slowly, her piercing gaze locking onto the seraphim) I must say, princess, your judgement is certainly... interesting. (While flying circles around Sera slowly and methodically, Adina takes a pause once beside the seraphim, leaning close to Sera's face) What happened to the morally correct choice of, ooooh, y'know... Annihilating all things evil and sinful?
Sera: (Sera's eyes flicker again, her expression darkening with Adina's words) That was... The choice I originally favored. However... The princess has given me reason to believe that redemption might be a possibility, and one that might be worth exploring. I simply seek... Confirmation, that redemption could be brought to the demon realms, after all. The cleanse only breeds discord and hate among sinners towards a realm meant to welcome them with open arms, should they seek it, of course.
Adina: (Adina comically pats the side of her head to be sure that she isn't hearing things, before shrugging returning to facing Sera) Ho, hum. I think you've spent a (she pinches her fingers) liiiitle too much time with that sister of yours. (she giggles and turns her back to Sera, looking at an orb depicting winners) Y'know, I tried to reason with the princess as well. I extended an olive branch for her to come to Heaven, be cleansed of her demonic heritage, and join us in the light. But, alas, her pride got the better of her, as sadly predictable as it were. She failed me, and she will fail you as well, dear seraphim.
Sera: (sneering) This isn't about making friends or giving up on cleansing the demon realms entirely. It is about giving them a better choice, a chance to turn from their sins and be saved. If the princesses' endeavor proves ineffective... The cleanse will be reinstated. I will not waver in this mission, Adina. So please, stand aside and trust in my judgment in this matter.
Adina: (Adina, with a contended smile, shakes her head in disagreement as she speaks) Y'know, I almost feel sorry for you. You're allowing yourself to be manipulated. (Adina smirks and puts a hand on Sera's shoulder, shaking her slightly for a second in a playful way) But who am I to say?! You're daddy Seraphiel's precious seraphim, after all! (She turns her back to Sera, shrugging cheerfully) Knock yourself out, girl. But I'll be keeping my eye (Adina summons her crystal balls as she says this; they swirl around her) on everything that transpires. This mission going awry won't look good for any of us, but especially you.
Sera: I assure you, I have not permitted myself to be manipulated. I have simply exercised my judgment upon the situation, in line with the angels' ideals and will. There exists good in these demons; I believe I possess the judgment necessary to make such a distinction. (Sera looks at a stained-glass depiction of Seraphiel before hanging her head and closing her eyes) If this mission should fail, though, I assure you that it will not fall upon only me.
"
— Sera and Adina's meeting revolving the cleanse and redemption.
"Sera: I just... (she takes a deep breath, trying to compose herself; voice breaking) I don't want to go back. What if... what if there's a possibility that those souls we have extinguished could have been saved...? They are still souls of the Lord and our Great Mother. There's always... light somewhere inside.
Adina: All beings were created by the Lord, but some stray far. The sins they committed and were thinking of committing snuffed out any gift of light granted to them. And that sin... can't simply be forgiven. (Adina cups her hands around Sera's face, the tears in Sera's face reflecting Adina's sickly sweet, twisted smile) You are guiltless. The Lord guided you to agree with me for a reason.
"
— Sera and Adina.
"The Void is what lies at the very end, beyond the light gifted to us by God. When one's soul is destroyed, there's nothing left to bring back - they leave our physical and supernatural plane. And they are moved to a void where time holds no weight. Most horrible of all, every soul in the Void still maintains their awareness, and all that was once known will become a distant memory, slowly fading away with no way of returning. And, unlike Heaven or Hell, eternal oblivion is final. You can never return once you cross over. Life and afterlife is precious, and the Void is a reminder of that. I wouldn't wish it on even the worst of Heaven's enemies."
— Sera about the Void.
"Sera: (she and Serenity approach Asherah; Sera bows her head) Great Mother, it is our honor to be gifted with your pres-
Serenity: (she squeals, walking up to Asherah ahead of Sera and curtsying) G- Great Mother!!! Hi!!! I'm Serenity! Goodness, it's so see you again!!!
Sera: (hushed, anxious) Serenity...
Asherah: (Asherah raises her hand politely with a soft smile, as if she's almost hurt by Sera's need for formality) Sera, my sweetling.. There's no such need for formalities. You may both call me Asha. (Asherah reaches into her hair and plucks two golden roses out from her strands, placing them in Sera and Serenity's hair, curtsying back at them) Seeing the royal Seraphim Sisters is nothing short of a joy. My dear daughters, who've grown into such wonderful things. So beatific, yet so different...
Serenity: (she giggles) Shucks, thank you, Asha! Yeah, we have our differences, but that's a good thing, no? Sera's the Head Seraphim who keeps everything safe and peaceful, and I'm the joy bringer that keeps everyone (hands in the air) joyfullll!!! I think we compliment one another perfectly!
Sera: (she seems deeply touched by Serenity's words, putting a reassuring hand on Serenity's shoulder) That we can both agree on, Serenity. (to Asherah) And it's an honor for us to be in your presence, Your-I mean... (strained, as if being informal physically pains her) A-shaaa... I've heard you were a woman of lovely and gentle nature, but seeing you in person, I can see the rumors weren't doing you enough justice.
Asherah: (Asherah blushes, additional roses blooming in her hair) Oh, my stars! (laughing, she looks over to nearby Ophanim who are guarding her) Guards! Do something about these sweet-talkers! (Sera looks to the Ophanim with a wide-eyed expression) They're killing me with kindness! (she continues laughing as Sera settles down; Asherah affectionately pinches Serenity's cheeks)
Serenity: (she giggles) Oh, stop it! Stop! Tee-hee! (Sera just watches this unfold, feeling out-of-place)
"
— The Seraphim sisters and Asherah.
"Asherah: (cut back to Asherah and the Seraphim sisters; Serenity is giggling uncontrollably as Asherah is repeatedly tossing her in the air and catching her; Sera keeps looking on awkwardly) Where have you been in all my aeons of existence, sweet pea? Oh, I must stop now, before I can't help myself! (she sets Serenity down next to Sera) I now see why Seraphiel talks about you two darlings all the time at the Empyrean. Seriously, he's shared everything! (Asherah whispers to Sera mischievously) Even your cherub pictures, Sera, when you were just an eye with one wing.
Serenity: (she laughs as Sera has a "WTF", embarrassed expression on her face) Ooooh!
Sera: Um- Ahem, I... remember those days, he would try to put on... 'onesie' on me. He'd say that even a giant eye needs baby clothes. It would end up looking like he just draped a giant cloth on my head though. He also liked to play... peek and seek with me. (she smiles) He'd show me his eyes and I'd show him mine.
Serenity: (to Sera) Remember when Dad would get you to play that with me when I was a baby seraph? I don't mean to brag, buuuut... (she slyly says to Asherah) I had more eyes.
Sera: (she scoffs playfully) Eyes that I was willing to show...
Serenity: (playfully nudges Sera) You sure about that? Wanna have an 'eye off'?
Sera: Serenity, not in front of the Queen...
Serenity: (with a playfully smug smile) That's what I thought!
"
— Asherah and the Seraphim sisters.
"Sera: (Sera approaches Asherah from behind. Her hands are clasped in front of herself as she bows her head.) Great Mother... I have to confess my sins.
Asherah: (Asherah slowly turns to face Sera, a warm smile on her face.) I'm always listening, dear. (She motions her hand forward, and vines form from behind Sera to form a chair — almost like a confessional —, as well as a vine-crafted side table with a little complementary bottle of water :) .) Go ahead, sweetheart. (She turns around to continue tending a cherry blossom tree.) Whatever it is, do know I will never judge you.
"
— Sera goes to Asherah to confess.
"Asherah: My dear... I understand that you feel guilty for your actions. (she looks towards a tree that is missing its leaves) The leaves of time have fallen, their accession irreversible. Instead of tormenting yourself, now is the time to learn... (she gestures with her hand, causing the tree to sprout cherry blossoms) ...and grow.
Sera: (Sera shakes her head, visibly struggling not to cry) How could I possibly even hope to atone when I helped in the slaughter of a billion soul we could have granted salvation to? (her expression grows pained with tears falling down her cheeks) All of the broken chains, separated by salvation and condemnation, we could have joined once more...
Asherah: (a soft, gold light wraps itself around Sera, almost like a hug; Sera, with widened tear-stained eyes, is softly pulled towards Asherah, who has a bittersweet, endearing smile on her face) Oh, Sera.... (she gently wipes the tears from Sera's face, and they float upward) You made a hasty decision that you regret. One which you thought was the only choice. You were misguided, but your intentions weren't evil. I know it is painful. Believe me, sweetheart, I know. But dwelling on what you could have done won't lessen the pain, nor save anyone.
Sera: (she closes her eyes in pain, her eyes on the ground) I don't know what to do...! (facing Asherah) What can I do next??
Asherah: (she begins gracefully drifting away from Sera, towards a tree in the garden; Sera extends her hand forward towards) Speak from your heart... (she smiles at Sera, her hand on her chest) Will you do that for me? (Asherah vanishes in a blinding flash of light resembling the sun itself, the cherry blossom tree the first thing Sera sees in the Queen's wake)
Sera: (she stares at the tree, seemingly reluctant to accent forgiveness she thinks she doesn't deserve; however, she straightens up and slowly bows her head) ...Of course, Great Mother.
"
— Asherah comforts Sera.
"Sera: (Flashback; a younger Sera's eyes widen as Adina enters the sanctum with her, in a gorgeous, ethereal gown.) My... (She approaches Adina and bows her head respectfully.) Ever since we found you in the thralls of war, I had every faith - even in your downtrodden state - that you would rise and do right by the angelic order, Adina. Your family would be proud. (She goes to adjust Adina's bow tie.)
Adina: (With a proud, serene smile, Adina raises her hands with palms open, a gesture for Sera to stop.) I know. (Sera's smile fades as she shifts away and lowers her heads, Adina adjusting her bow tie for herself.)
Seraphiel: (He enters the room, holding the hand of his latest child, who is flying in a teetering, uncontrolled way. His eyes light up as he sees Adina.) Oh, my dear... You look beautiful! Why, you're practically glowing!! (He looks down at the child, who gazes up at Adina.) Adina, before you go, there's someone I'd like you to meet. This is Serenity. My latest angelette.
Adina: (To Seraphiel, with an amused smirk and eye eyebrow raised.) Another? My, the Great Mother must favor you deeply, shining her light of life upon you time and again. (She lowers her gaze at Serenity—around three years old at this point—, who giggles innocently as she looks up at Adina with a mouth-open grin. Serenity's seraphic eyes open and close throughout her body and wings arbitrarily.) ....She has her father's eyes, I see.
"
— Adina, Sera, and Seraphiel in a flashback; Adina becomes Chieftess of Justice and meets little Serenity.
"Sera: You look beautiful, Serenity. It's funny... I look upon you and see so little of myself... (She turns her back to Serenity, in deep thought) Tell me, dearest sister... (She looks at Serenity, emotionally.) Did I do well...? Raising you? Making you... Happy? How could I be Chieftess of Justice if I can't do right by you and human souls?
Serenity: (She gives Sera a bittersweet smile.) ...You did... Pretty well, big sis. You took care of me, kept our people in check, and helped everyone in our kingdom. You were very, very strong. You still are. But you're... Missing something important: Compassion. And maaaaybe a lil' bit of patience. We're supposed to have compassion for everyone, even the sinners of Hell. You care a lot about Heaven and the angels, but not for... For everyone we could be saving. You're a good sister. You've kept me safe, and you're a great leader. But EVERYONE deserves a piece of Heaven. ...And for Heaven's sake, stop being so scared! Learn to take risks! I've listened to your advice my entire life, and it's helped me through so much. But now... maybe you should start taking a few notes from me. (She takes Sera's hands as Sera looks down at her.) Don't you agree with me?
Sera: (After a long pause, tears fall from Sera's eyes as she smiles and nods.) Yes... Yes, yes. (Serenity smiles in agreement. She and Sera close their heads, leaning their foreheads against each other in a display of sisterly love.)
"
— Sera and Serenity after becoming the Chieftess of Justice and Head Seraph respectively.

Trivia[]

  • Her name means "burning one" and "fiery princess".
    • Sera also means "brimstone" in Slavic languages, a word that is used to describe matter that is struck by a godly being.
  • Her theme song would be "Golden Slumbers" by The Beatles.
  • Enjoys writing and listening to poetry on her rare off-time.
  • Her favorite snacks are blueberry muffins.
    • According to Amelia, Sera smells like freshly baked blueberry muffins.
  • In Serenity's childhood, Sera often played a "game" with Serenity where they would compete to see who had more eyes. Sera had slightly less seraphic eyes than her littlest sister does, though Sera, lightheartedly, insinuated that she merely let Serenity win.
  • Prefers not to swear and dislikes profanity, but can be pushed to swear if sufficiently stressed.
    • Would NEVER swear around Serenity, though. She's too precious.
  • Not great with kids.
  • Has basically no sense of humor. Always needs Serenity to explain any meme she shows her.
  • Oddly, she doesn't care for flying that much and prefers to teleport to her locations.
  • Went to prom with Lucifer, something she'd prefer to forget.
  • Similar to Serenity, Sera's wings respond in sync to her emotions. They extend and are adorned with fiery eyes when she feels anger, droop down to the ground when she feels sadness, and radiate a white glow during moments of happiness or intense emotions.
  • Michael and Sera have a fairly awkward relationship, given her romantic relationship with Lucifer pre-fall. She's intimidated by him and some days, in private, he's prone to resenting Sera for not being able to save Lucifer, when in reality he's projecting - something he is bitterly aware of.
  • In "Heaven Meets Hell", it is strongly implied that Sera and Serenity once tried to make a deal with the Roman Empire that backfired, resulting in the Fall of Rome.
  • There are intentionally numerous parallels between Sera and Adina, and they are intended to be counterparts to each other.
    • Both are high-ranking angels of Heaven.
    • Both appear orderly, strict, poised, and are quick to remind others to maintain etiquette and manners.
    • Both have their doubts regarding the efficacy of peaceful solutions to the issue of Hell's infernal overpopulation.
    • Both share animal motifs, Sera's being a bird while Adina's is a fish (birds eat fish, I'm just sayin').
    • They are both greatly annoyed by Azrael's antics and behavior.
    • Both play a role in the Extermination, with Sera being one of the high angels that approved the idea, while Adina directly manages the Exorcists along with Azrael.
    • Additionally, both are close to each other in terms of biological age, as Sera is in her later 30s and Adina in her 40s.
      • Despite this, there are obvious differences between the two. Sera's composed denouement, even amidst stress, is genuine, lending weight to her attempts to encourage proper behavior in others. In contrast, Adina is more goofy and bubbly, especially behind closed doors, and attempts to exert control over others' lives seemingly without reason. While Sera reluctantly greenlit the Extermination out of fear and to protect Heaven from the Root of All Evil, Adina's did so out of insanity and her misguided belief in the cleanse as a divine tribute. Furthermore, Sera demonstrates clear remorse regarding the cleanse, showing no enjoyment in it and was even willing to listen to Charlie's ideas for redemption and displayed empathy towards Charlie despite the princess' later outburst. In contrast, Adina is an unapologetic sadist, deriving pleasure from the suffering of demons and leaving no room for Charlie to express her ideas for rehabilitation during their encounter.
