"The age of the Ancient One is upon us, my pets. Once we have carried out the order of our saviors, the blood of the demons will rain from the sky, Heaven will burn in conflagration, and master and servant shall be reunited. Once they ascend to their place in the Universe, we will be blessed for our fidelity. They will, at last... See my worth."
— The Divine's sermon to the Chosen.

Emily, most commonly known as The Divine, is a recurring antagonist of Hazbin Hotel: Journey to the Light.

She serves as a minor antagonist in Chapters 2 and 3, the final antagonist of Chapter 4, and a major antagonist in Chapter 5.

She was an insecure, extremely powerful supernatural creature and deeply fantastical worshipper of Satan. After being deemed worthless by her creator, Satan, and thrown into the depths of Hell, she made her mission to gain Satan's affection by any means necessary, even committing the most heinous acts in the name of the Devil.

She was viewed as an unpredictable entity of unknown origins who plagued Hell itself, she served as the supreme leader and high priestess of the Devil-worshipping faction called The Chosen.

Biography[]

Background[]

Nothing is currently known about how the Divine came to be. All that is known about her background is that at some point, she "came from the stars" and wrought on a cult of devil worshippers known as The Chosen, and one of the most fanatic worshippers of Satan after founding her coven of followers in the Wrath Ring. She and her cult would begin plaguing Hell, committing unspeakably vile atrocities in Satan's name.

Centuries before the events of the series, the Divine was "judged" by Satan itself, who concluded that she was worthless and of no value, which could have possibly been the catalyst for her forming the Chosen.

Events of Hazbin Hotel: Journey to the Light[]

Chapter 2[]

In "Forgotten Dreams", the Divine sends the Chosen to decimate a small village in the Wrath Ring. After the Chosen massacred most of the inhabitants, they proceed to round four survivors, and begin a sacrificial ceremony. The survivors are crucified and suspended for fire, and after a moment of suspenseful silence, the Divine appears from a ring of green fire, before assuming her physical form. After leering at the survivors, she commands one of the cultists to paint green runes across their bodies. After the survivors are marked, the Divine pulls out an angel's spear and laments on the nature of the Universe before Hell was founded. She harms one of the survivors by slowly cutting her cheek with the spear, before slowly inserting the spear into her side. After one of the survivors cusses the Divine out, she slowly eviscerates him with her knife, and then jams her hand into the wound, pouring a green energy into the screaming demon's body. A moment after, the demon's soul streams out of their mouth, eyes, and wound, tearing them in half from the inside and mummifying the sinner's body. The soul energy then backs into the Divine, allowing her to absorb his essence. Afterward, the Divine orders that the other survivors be burned on the crosses. The survivors are then immolated as the Divine and the other cultists calmly observe their final agonizing moments. Once the survivors have stopped screaming and thrashing, the Divine claims that they are free.

After the Chosen have returned to their fortified temple, they are seen bowing and chanting in front of a gigantic statue of Satan. The Divine rises afterward, and proclaims to the cult that Satan's time is nearly upon them, and once they carry out its command, it will "bless" them for their devotion.

Chapter 3[]

In "The Chosen", eight years after the Happy Hotel crew split apart following their failed attempt to escape Purgatory, the Divine conducted a ceremony in front of a massive statue of Satan located in an unknown planet in Purgatory. Following the ceremony, the Divine tells the cult that Charlie's time to join Satan had came, and ordered a small group of cultists to capture the demon princess.

Hours later Charlie, accompanied by the young angel, Manco, was attacked by the group sent by the Divine while traversing across a planet in Purgatory. She ran into a nearby forest with Manco, eventually becoming separated from him as well as Razzle and Dazzle. Off-screen, Manco is captured and mind-controlled by the Divine herself, who then presents him to Charlie after she finds them. When Charlie becomes distracted, she is knocked out and captured by the cultists using a mist that renders her unconscious, while Razzle and Dazzle are restrained by several cultists using magic.

The cult brings Charlie back to their ceremony, suspending the princess above a pit of green fire using magical green chains. As the princess woke up, disoriented and questioning her surroundings, the Divine arrived with a mind-controlled Manco by her side, dragging the angel around using a magical noose around his neck, which caused Charlie to become incredibly distraught and agitated. Despite her pleas, the Divine refuses to release Manco. The Princess of Hell, in her rage, accessed her full demon form while threatening to kill the Divine and the cult if they harmed Manco. In response, the Divine completely immobilized Charlie in place with a wave of her hand, and ordered a nearby cultist to paint markings on her face for a ritual. Once the markings were placed, the Divine released the princess from her immobilization. The Divine got face-to-face with Charlie and revealed that the princess was going to be sacrificed to Satan so that the Devil will present itself to the Chosen and they will be graced by her master's presence, which Charlie reacted to in horror.

With Manco having outlived his usefulness, the Divine ordered the cultists to murder him so that they could paint his blood on Charlie. As Charlie herself futility thrashed around in an attempt to break free from her chains, the Divine had three of her servants hold the child down, and began instructing them on how to torture him before he would be murdered. Before this could happen, Fergus, Angel Dust, Husk, Cherri Bomb, and the seven angel children arrived to crash the ceremony, having teamed back up to rescue Charlie. Infuriated at the disruption, the Divine shape-shifted into a giant Komodo dragon and attacked the cavalry, only for the seven angels to make a sudden appearance to release the princess from her binds while the Divine was distracted. The Princess of Hell, enraged after what the Divine had put Manco through, furiously unleashed her powers on the Divine, who returned to her demonic form, resulting in a magic battle between the two entities. The destructive fight resulted in the two blasting at each other with concentrated energy beams, leading to their respective blasts connecting.

Although the Divine initially had the upper hand over the Princess of Hell after absorbing the essence of her nearby cultists, she was slowly overwhelmed by Charlie's partially angelic magic. At the end of the battle, the Divine is injured after one of the princess' magical beams burned her entire right arm off of her body. Knowing that Charlie was too powerful to fight head-on, the Divine produced a magical projectile that releases a blinding light as well as a green smokescreen after Charlie attempted to deflect it. With the princess disoriented, the Divine shape-shifted into a raven and flew off into the sky, vanishing without a trace.

Chapter 4[]

In the mid-credits scene of the Chapter 4 finale "It's Never Too Late", the Divine is hosting a sermon and worshipping a statue of Satan by herself. After finishing her prayer, she attempts to leave until Satan itself calls out to her from the statue. The Divine is taken aback by Satan's presence, falling to her knees in prayer and weeping softly as the Devil laments on how all of its apprentices have either failed or abandoned it, before inquiring if the Divine was the apprentice that it had been searching for to lead its crusade to victory. The Divine swore that she would not fail her master, offering that she would allow it to kill her and her entire coven if they did fail. Satan announces its trust in her, addressing the Divine by her true name, "Emily".

Chapter 5[]

In "My Brotha Arackniss", the Divine contacts Satan from Purgatory and tells it that she is beginning her crusade to free it from its prison. Satan curtly tells the Divine to not make it regret choosing her as its champion, but the Divine ensures her god that she will not fail or betray it as its other underlings have. Satan orders the Divine to gather the "essentials" for a ritual to access Purgatory and kill anyone who tries to stop her from succeeding, or else it will kill her and the Chosen like they were nothing and move on to another "pawn".

In "Rotation of Power", a benign cult of elderly witches in the Wrath Ring are preforming a ritual and collecting magical tree sap (which they use as paint) from a magical tree which they worship, as it allows them to travel to different dimensions or locations in Hell via painting a set of runes. However, their ritual is interrupted when the Divine, on the orders of Satan, arrives to steal all of the sap for her ritual of bringing about the return of the Devil. She starts by blasting open the doors of the hut the cult has used to preserve the tree and begins slaughtering them. When one cultist desperately throws rocks at the Divine, the malevolent witch hurls a boulder at the cultist's head, causing her head to explode from the impact. All of the cultists surround the tree, ready to protect it with their lives, but the Divine creates a ring of fire right out from under them, torturously burning them all to death.

The Divine then comes face-to-to face with the cult's elder, who tries to ward her off with magic, but the Divine resists her inferior magic and grabs the elder by the neck, forcing the elder to watch as she drains the tree of all its sap and life, causing it to wither and die. As the tree begins collapsing, the Divine throws the crying and heartbroken elder to the ground in the direction of where the tree is collapsing, and watches as the withered tree collapses onto her, graphically crushing her to death.

In the penultimate Chapter 5 episode “Moving Day”, the Divine initiates an attack on the Hazbin Hotel following Satan's takeover of Angel Dust. Employing Angel Dust to grievously injure Vaggie, Satan then returns to the Divine. Together, they teleport back to the Wrath Ring to perform the summoning ritual.

In the Chapter 5 finale “Exeunt Omnes”, the Divine is now prepared to herald the return of Satan, utilizing Angel as a conduit under the guidance of the Devil. Initiating the summoning ritual, it reaches its apex with a vibrant green energy bolt piercing the sky, acting as a gateway to Purgatory's realm. However, Charlie, Octavia, I.M.P, and the entire hotel staff intervene, grappling with anguish following Vaggie's demise. Charlie and Octavia form a united front to challenge the Divine, while Molly and the rest of the hotel team labor to subdue Satan and liberate Angel Dust. The Divine fiercely clashes with Charlie and Octavia, keeping them on the defensive despite Charlie going at the Divine with everything she’s got.

Amidst the confrontation, the hotel crew successfully restrains Angel, allowing Molly and Lux to approach him. Lux makes a heartfelt connection with Angel, while Molly invokes poignant memories of his family and the hotel crew. As these touching recollections flood Angel's consciousness, he musters the strength to expel Satan from his mind.

With Angel successfully restored, Lux joins forces with Charlie and Octavia in their battle against the Divine. Swiftly and deftly, Lux neutralizes the Divine's powers, causing the formidable entity to plummet to the ground, unveiling her true form as a young girl—an astonishing revelation for the crew. Yet, despite this revelation, the ritual only intensifies, causing swirling, green masses of energy to flow through the sky and ground; Satan's influence has grown more potent. The Devil intervenes, revitalizing the Divine's strength, compelling her to fight on. Recognizing that overcoming the Divine won't be as simple as disarming her, Lux establishes a connection with her as she rises, enabling Lux to delve into her mind and witness her origins.

Lux delves into the Divine's memories, a poignant revelation unfolds. The Divine, once known as Emily, was created by Satan in a quest to comprehend God's motives for creating humanity, essentially serving as the Devil's daughter. However, in a cruel twist of fate, Satan callously deemed young Emily to be worthless, callously casting her into the desolate depths of Hell. This cruel abandonment drove Emily to commit heinous acts in Satan's name, all in a desperate bid to earn the Devil's affection.

Moved by this tragic revelation, Lux severs the connection with Emily and implores her to listen. The Divine halts her assault as Lux addresses her by her true name—Emily. Charlie stands by Lux, reinforcing the message that she doesn't have to engage in abhorrent acts to gain favor from a cruel deity.

Showing vulnerability, Emily ceases her attack, revealing her true face. She expresses a lifetime of experiencing rejection, fear, and hatred, questioning where support was during her most challenging moments. Having felt overlooked and hurt, especially seeing help given to someone whose suffering seems minor in comparison to her own, the Divine's sadness turns to anger as she sees her current actions as the culmination of a life marked by suffering, believing it's too late to turn back due to all the pain she’s caused.

The Divine erupts in a furious blaze of Hellfire, prompting Charlie to shield Octavia from the blast, bearing the brunt and leaving the princess injured and disoriented. Following the fiery outburst, the Divine conducts a powerful incantation, proclaiming the opening of the breach to Purgatory in Satan's name. The breach unfolds, revealing Roo on the other side, much to Charlie's horror. Her eyes widening, Charlie screams at Lux to flee, but Roo seizes Lux with one of her roots and drags them towards her as Lux trembles and shudders with fear. With a malevolent grin, Roo impales Lux with her roots, sapping them of all their power, effectively ending their existence. Charlie is utterly devastated by Lux’s loss, falling to her knees and crying into her hands.

After absorbing Satan's essence as well, revealing the Devil to have essentially been Roo’s cosmic puppet, Roo emerged from the portal, deceitfully expressing gratitude to the Divine for her support. Despite knowing fully that Roo would kill her, the Divine gave herself to the Root of Evil, offering the give Roo all of her love. Roo replied that her proclamation sounded good to her and abruptly employed her roots to impale the Divine in the face, completely draining her of her powers and killing her as everyone watched in horror. Chuckling sadistically, Roo confesses to Charlie that while she enjoys having minions, she prefers them to be under her absolute control.

Personality[]

The Divine was completely devoted and loyal to the will and order of Satan, in a bid to gain its affection. She was self-righteous, viewing herself as a sort of second-in-command and herald to the Devil, outright referring to herself as "The Devil's Champion". Her beliefs made her an extremely dangerous force as she was willing to commit the most horrific atrocities imaginable to regain the faith of Satan; this included torturously murdering all who she viewed as sinful towards her god in horrific ways. She was seated in her ways and held no concern or care for her followers, viewing them only as mere pawns she could use to advance her goal of gaining Satan's favor, and drained several cultists of their lives in order to strengthen her own power during her battle with Charlie. She had a very eloquent and flowery manner of speaking, as if she stepped out of a Shakespearian play.

She devoted her entire existence to serving her dark master, and harbored an extremely warped and backward viewpoint of the Universe; She saw other demons who disparaged her as "heretics", and viewed the angels of Heaven (especially the Exterminators) as the true "demons" and "creatures of sin". She repeatedly preached that Satan is a benevolent god and that Heaven is responsible for all evil in creation, and oddly enough, seemed to genuinely believe everything she preached.

While the Divine presented herself as an unshakable and ruthless disciple of her gods, she displayed a more vulnerable side when confronted by Satan itself, going as far as to break down in tears, overwhelmed by the "beauty" of her master, revealing her, in reality, to be a scared little girl desperate for Satan's attention and non-existent affection.

It was possible that the Divine got a sort of thrill out of murdering and tormenting her victims; during the Chosen's invasion of the unnamed village, she fired two firebolts in the air simply to strike fear into the hearts of the civilians, and stood in the middle of her flames in order to intimidate them, indicating that she might have enjoyed carnage and a feeling of being feared by others. During sacrificial ceremonies held by the Chosen, she caused unnecessary pain to the Chosen's victims before murdering them, as seen by her slowly cutting the cheek of one unfortunate demon and savoring his agony. When she had Manco in her possession, she caused unnecessary harm to him by dragging him around with a magical chain that burned his neck whenever he resisted and painfully tortured him using magic, even forcing Charlie to watch this, and sermonizing the "beauty" of Manco's agony. It is also heavily implied that she planned on having Manco tortured to death by her servants, as she instructed her servants to sever his wings.

However, while the Divine initially might had appeared to enjoy killing and generally hurting others, she never killed just for the sake of killing - there was always some twisted motive associated with the murders she committed. She also seemed completely indifferent to the suffering she caused and did not appear to gain enjoyment from it, viewing it as her simply carrying out the order and will of the Devil.

Appearance[]

The Divine's primary form was that of an unnaturally tall, slender, pitch-black humanoid with branch-like horns and bright green markings all across her body that could move on their own accord.

While in the coven's temple, the Divine took on another form that seemed to be more human in appearance; she appeared to be a slim, frail-looking humanoid of child-like stature with dark grey hair. She wore a blue-ish grey tattered dress of some sort, and her skin was a lifeless grey color, and appeared to be slightly rotten. She had bright green irises with moving neon-green streaks and markings all across her body that were hidden by her wardrobe.

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Dark Magic: As the leader of the Chosen, the Divine was incredibly capable in the use of the dark magic and one of the most powerful entities in Hell. A testament to her power, she rather easily defeated Charlie and Octavia simultaneously in their final encounter, though Charlie was in a fragile emotional state at the time and the Divine was being empowered by Satan.
    • Dimensional Travel: The Divine was capable of traveling across dimensions such as Hell, including the Inferno's seven rings, and even the prison dimension of Purgatory.
    • Energy Manipulation: The Divine could shape her dark and mystical energy into concentrated blasts of destructive torrents, as seen during her battle with Charlie. The Divine could also shift her energy into tangible constructs and utilize it in various ways; After taking control of Manco, she created magical chains to restrain the angel by his neck.
    • Immobilization: The Divine possessed the power to completely halt the motor skills of other entities, leaving them frozen in place, unable to move in any way until she chose to release them. Despite not appearing so at first glance, the Divine's immobilization spell was capable of causing a degree of pain on the target, as it left the victim unable to breathe while frozen, as evidenced by Charlie coughing and gasping for air after being released from the Divine's spell.
    • Immortality: The Divine was a supernatural entity, and as a result, she was incapable of dying by any natural means that would kill a human, such as old age or diseases. She was ageless, still retaining a childlike appearance in her true form, despite being centuries old according to Satan. However, it was possible that she could be killed if mortally wounded by angelic weapons, or if she was destroyed by an entity with divine power, which the latter proved to be true when her entire lifeform and powers were all drained by Roo.
    • Mind Manipulation: The Divine could control multiple sentient entities at once and was capable of seeing through their eyesight once they were under her control. Once under her possession, the eyes of the Divine's victims glowed a bright green color,
    • Pain Inducement: The Divine used eldritch magic to torture Manco, which made the child feel the sensation of white-hot knives piercing his flesh.
    • Pyrokinesis: One of the Divine's most notable powers was her ability to conjure and manipulate green hellfire. Using her dark spells, the Divine could generate fireballs and torrents of flames.
    • Regeneration: The Divine was able to heal from having her arm disintegrated by Charlie after a period of time.
    • Shapeshifting: The Divine could shift into seemingly any form of her desire, including her primary demonic form, a giant raven, a black goo, and a giant dragon-like creature.
    • Smoke Manipulation: The Divine could produce a thick wall of acrid green smoke to evade her opponents or make a quick escape.
    • Soul Absorption: The Divine had the ability to absorb the souls of living organisms. During her battle with Charlie, the Divine, after her energy blast connected with the princess', drained the lives of several nearby cultists in order to increase her power.

Abilities[]

  • Intimidation: The Divine was an entity who inspired great fear in others. Nearly every character she had encountered, this even included Charlie, feared her, due to her insane beliefs and desire to bring fear, darkness, terror to those who defied the Devil. Even her own subordinates were implied to be terrified at the price of failing her.

Quotes[]

Chapter 2[]

"There was a time, my children, where there was no light. When all knew the magnanimous that was our master. — The Divine ordering the coven to capture Charlie so that she could be sacrificed to Satan.
"Hello, princess. Lost something?"
— The Divine to Charlie after capturing Manco.
"How sullen you are, princess, in moments of us sanctity. This is a beautiful moment. You will take your place at our master's side, and we will be honored with its presence. Isn't that beautiful? But, beforehand, we must unburden you of this creature of sin."
— The Divine to Charlie, revealing her plans to sacrifice the princess to Satan and kill Manco.
"This abomination will be the key to our ascension, and creation will be ours!"
— The Divine to the Chosen, referring to Manco.
"Oh, come on, princess, open your eyes. It's beautiful, really. (she looks to the sky and spreads her arms as Manco screams in agony) Let the agony of this winged abomination fuel you. Relish its screams! Subsist on its tears! The beauty of its suffering is only second to your light!"

"Get back! GET BACK, YOU FILTHY RACE TRAITORS!!! FUCKING HERETICS!!! THOSE ANGELS WILL BRING NOTHING BUT SUFFERING!!! THEY WILL BE YOUR END!"
— The Divine while being ganged up on by Charlie and the hotel crew.

Chapter 4[]

"The Divine: (with her hand on the statue of Satan) Lo there do I see your cage, made in His unfair image. We daren't forgotten your pain. We will set you free, and you shall cast a light onto the sin of the days and ways of all. It shall be done... (she slowly begins walking away)
Satan: (telepathically) Why praise a stone... When I'm right here?
The Divine: (she stops and gazes at the statue in shock) M-... My master...
Satan: For so long, I have searched for a disciple who would lead my crusade to success.
The Divine: (voice breaking) It's been so long... Too long...
Satan: And yet, all of my seekers have betrayed or abandoned me.
The Divine: (praying) Until the death of creation, we will not fail you...
Satan: Centuries ago, I judged you and deemed you of no value.
The Divine: (shaking) We do not deserve you, we do not deserve you...
Satan: But, here you stand centuries later. Will you... Finally be the one I've searched for?
The Divine: (she falls to her knees) We will not fail you, or you have every right to strike us down. (she bows) O Great One...
Satan: I hope you will not fail me... Emily.
"
— Satan enlists the help of the Divine.

Chapter 5[]

"Satan: Don't make me regret choosing you.
The Divine: You will not. Everything will happen as you have declared it. My predecessors were blind to your grace, but I am not them! (she puts her hands on the Satan statue and bows her head) Please... How could I possibly prove perfect to your magnanimous? I don't want to be left alone... Not again.
Satan': And yet, you already disappoint me with your inaction. Gather the essentials for our ritual, kill all who try to prevent my ascension, and I will grant you more than you deserve; my congratulations. You will prove perfect or I will kill you and your followers, and move on to the next pawns. You are all inconsequential. Prove me wrong, Emily.
"
— The Divine and Satan.
"The Divine: The ritual draws near, my love. Soon all life will know your light.
Satan: And when they do, you will rule under me. As powerful and as respected as an angel, or as cruel and feared as a devil. It shall be as you desire.
The Divine: (fighting back tears) Master... I don't deserve such kindness...
Satan: Do not mistake this remittance for kindness, nor allow your current position to make you complacent. (harshly) You are NOTHING special. There is never a shortage of willing fools seeking power or a pathetic sense of 'purpose' whom I can manipulate into doing my bidding, so I will never be alone nor lack for assistance. Is that understood?
The Divine: Yes, master.
Satan: Finish the ritual. I will not forget your previous failure.
"
— Satan and the Divine.
"All my life... All that I've known is rejection, fear, and hate... (Emily looks at Lux) Where were you - any people like you - when I needed you the most? (she looks spitefully at Angel Dust) And yet, you came to the aide of one whose suffering pales to mine. (the Divine menacingly towers over Lux) Do you believe I'd stop now, right when the key to my ascension wanders so willingly into my grasp, (voice rising) all the suffering I've wrought, my ENTIRE existence leading to this moment?! IT'S TOO LATE! I'VE COME TOO FAR!!!"
— The Divine rejects redemption.
"For Satan."
— The Divine before opening the portal to Purgatory and freeing Satan/Roo.

Quotes Pertaining to the Divine[]

"She was sent from the stars to guide us."
— A Chosen member.

Trivia[]

  • Her appearance and powers were heavily inspired by the Head Witch from Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal.
  • She is the only antagonist in the series to be a child (or at least physically a child in her true form while taking the form of an ancient demon in her primary guise).
  • While currently displayed little to no redeeming qualities, the series' creators believe the Divine to be a tragic and misguided character with a larger backstory which will be explored in Chapter 5.
  • It was unknown what exactly the Divine was. Many characters referred to her as a witch, but her appearances expanded her powers to the point that this description, while not entirely inaccurate, was a gross oversimplification. According to the series' creators, the Divine never died, hinting that she might have possibly been a Hellborn demon. However, "The Chosen" seemed to debunk the possibility of her being a demon, since she was capable of accessing Purgatory, a realm which could only be entered by archangels, cherubs, or non-demonic extremely powerful supernatural entities. Given the way her followers spoke of her, it was possible that she could also be some sort of dark goddess, or possibly even an alien.
    • Her origin was finally revealed of being created by Satan, having a human physiology, though was cast aside and thrown at the depths of Hell.
  • Originally, in "Exeunt Omnes", the Divine would have survived and been drastically empowered by Satan rather than killed by Roo, granting her the powers of the Light Beyond the Stars. She would then be driven mad with the power and aid Satan in completely annihilating Hell, cackling insanely all along the way.
  • The Divine had managed to become Charlie's most personally hated enemy. Notably, she was the first (and only until Roo) antagonist in the entire series that Charlie has attempted to outright kill, in response to the Divine mind-controlling Manco, forcing him to relive his death, and attempting to torture and murder the child in order to please Satan.
