Events of Hazbin Hotel: Journey to the Light[]
Holy Hell[]
In "Livin' on a Prayer", Tory is summoned by Adina, who orders him to fetch Serenity and Saint Peter. Tory flies off and meets Serenity and Saint Peter at a lake, where they are fishing together. Serenity greets Tory with a hug and asks him if he has been promoted by the C.H.E.R.U.B yet. Tory bashfully admits he hasn't and is still a mere messenger, but he thinks they're considering moving him up at some point and he just needs to go on a few more missions to prove himself. Serenity promises him that he will be a guardian angel one day. Tory is grateful at this, before focusing on the task at hand and announcing to them that Adina requires their presence at the Heavenly Court.
Tory follows the two to the Heavenly Court, overhearing Serenity's suspicion and distrust of Adina. Due to how much Tory trusts Serenity, he begins to suspect Adina as well and makes it his mission to clear or find something on Adina. Keeping it to himself, Tory discreetly hides himself away when Serenity and Saint Peter enter the courtroom, hiding in the rafters and watching everything unfold. Tory begins to suspect Adina is up to something, but leaves as Adina returns to work.
In "Heavenly Highjinks", Tory is given seemingly good news by Leo Lightheart; he is going to shadow Honey, Beau, and Bea on their missions to Earth. Tory is initially excited, but upon meeting the three Cherubs, they are rather cold and dismissive of him, with Beau telling Tory is sit back and be quiet. They also task Tory with carrying all of their supplies.
On their first mission, the Cherubs find a car barreling down the streets at high speed, and Bea says that the human inside is one the C.H.E.R.U.B has been tasked with protecting. They discover that the breaks of the car have failed and must stop it before anyone is hurt. Beau cannot be bothered to help out, so Bea and Honey step up while Tory is forced to watch from above, tailing his cohorts. During the chase, Bea sees a bright jewel in a display window and abandons the chase, while Honey, though she is able to keep pace with the car, finds herself bragging to Tory about him being too slow to catch up. While bragging, Honey is abruptly clotheslined by a street sign and wipes out, leaving Tory the only cherub left. Seeing the car is barreling towards a group of handicapped orphans, Tory freaks out and dashes ahead of the car, using his shell as a speed bump against the car. The car flips over and violently crashes, and the driver is left paralyzed, but alive. In the aftermath of the chase, the cherubs link up on a rooftop as Honey and Bea celebrate their "success" and no loss-of-life, ignoring the driver's pleas for death with haunts Tory.
On their second mission, Tory, Bea, and Honey have thwarted a bank robbery offscreen to save a client they were meant to protect. Honey mentions that it was a successful mission, but Tory frantically claims that they only protected the client and that all the hostages were either killed or injured, and a valuable gem stone is missing, though Bea tells Tory to stay quiet. Tory then takes note that Beau is gone and wonders where he is. Meanwhile, Beau is revealed to have taken the gem stone to an unknown place in Heaven to dance his frustrations away (complete with letting his long hair down and headbanging).
On their third mission, the four Cherubs find a submarine stranded in the middle of the ocean. Beau says their chances of survival are not good, but Tory insists they must be helped. They exchange ideas, completely ignoring the fact that Tory is the only aquatic animal and is thus most qualified for the job. Beau lazily suggests that Honey use their speed to fly the submarine back to surface, but Honey flies at such a velocity that she blazes through the submarine, and the people trapped into are nearly drowned. A horrified Tory is forced to save everyone.
The next day, in the aftermath of a mission, Beau and Bea tell Tory to go check on Honey. Tory teleports into a bar to find Honey surrounded by bloodied corpses. Startled and mortified, he questions what happened. Honey, visibly upset with her mascara running, explains that the bikers murdered their client, and in response, she killed them all. As Tory questions everything, Honey relates the situation to a past incident in an opium den from the 80s involving her and Bea. During the conversation, it's revealed that Honey had taken cocaine offered by the client since she wanted to relate to the bar-goers, which contributed to the chaos. Honey's barely-coherent explanation includes her past mistake of her and Beau being too high to notice a client convulsing from an overdose, thinking he was doing a dance move instead. Tory is left in complete shock, now realizing the depth of the trio's incompetence.
The next day, Tory befriends a little boy who mistakenly believes Tory is just an ordinary turtle. However, the kid suddenly knocks out and kidnaps Tory, and when Tory wakes up in a cage, he discovers the boy is deeply disturbed, taking pleasure in killing animals and turning them into macabre taxidermy creations. Tory manages to escape and, in a fit of pent-up anger, pins the boy to the ground with his shell, screaming and calling him a psychopath. Regaining his composure after his anger boils over, Tory reveals to the kid his true nature as cherub, and advises him to change his ways before he becomes even worse. Before leaving, Tory frees the animals the boy had caged.
The following day, while Tory, Beau, Honey, and Bea are vibin' on a cloud in the sky far above a cityscape; Tory is in his shell off to the side, staring off the edge, Honey and Bea are on their smartphones, and Beau is kicked back, sipping tip and reading newspaper. Beau (not knowing what Tory had went through) nonchalantly shows the three a newspaper article, revealing that the boy Tory tried to rehabilitate was brutally killed by the animals Tory had set free shortly after Tory had left, as retribution for what he did to them. Shell-shocked, Tory just stands wide-eyed, the color draining from his form, zoning out in horror. Beau and Bea, unaware of the situation, humorously speculate about why Tory is so upset.
At the end of the week, Honey, Bea, Beau, and a very disheveled Tory report their missions to Leo Lightheart, proclaiming that it was all a success and conveniently leaving out the worst parts of their adventures. As Honey, Bea, and Beau blatantly lie out their asses, Tory tries to keep his cool, smiling insanely as his superiors prattle about their successes that were mostly, if not entirely, Tory's doing.
In "Everything You Know is Wrong", Tory makes his long-awaited return after Adina announces to Heaven that Serenity has been banished. He is distraught by the news and flies up to a clearly pissed off St. Peter. He asks Peter many questions, but Peter, taking charge, ordered Tory to go to Heaven's courtroom and see what was happening.
Following Peter's edict, Tory returns to the courtroom, where he eavesdrops on Adina and Fitch, hiding in the rafters. He discovers their plan that Adina has been harvesting the prayers of tortured sinners, using forbidden powers to maintain control over Haven, and plots to launch a "holy crusade" to exterminate all that they seem as evil in the Universe, including any dissidents and dissenters. However, he is spotted by Fitch, who hurls a trident at Tory to kill him. Tory screams in terror, narrowly avoids the trident, and escapes, prompting Adina to send her drones to find him.
While being hounded by drones, Tory urgently flies over to Ebony, looking terrified and exhausted, and reveals Adina harvesting the prayers of tortured sinners to maintain control over Heaven. Fearful and hiding in his shell, Tory explains that royal guards are searching for him to silence him. Ebony, initially confused and worried, understands the severity of the situation and tries to calm Tory. When drones appear searching for Tory, he is too terrified to even leave his shell, so Ebony takes action to protect him, picking him up by his shell and using her own body to shield him from the drones' sensors, successfully avoiding detection. After the drones leave, she reassures a trembling Tory that they are safe, at least for now. Ebony takes Tory into the nearby horse stables to keep him safe, and comforts him as he nearly has a breakdown. The two agree to stop Adina and Fitch's plot, starting with alerting St. Peter.
Ebony and Tory eventually rendezvous with Saint Peter, where Tory anxiously recounts the entire ordeal. Though Peter seems skeptical of everything, he strongly believes that Serenity doesn't deserve to be in Purgatory, Peter resolves to orchestrate her liberation. After some persuasion from Ebony and Tory, Peter consents to their involvement in the plan.
Tory, Peter, and Ebony made their way to the Realm Travel Facility at C.H.E.R.U.B. Headquarters. Due to the staff at the headquarters' unwillingness to let them in, Peter disguises as a cherub delivery boy, claiming to be delivering "portal supplies." Despite his nerves, the disguise proved effective, allowing him to reach the portal room leading to Purgatory. Tory and Ebony concealed themselves in the cart Peter pushed, successfully infiltrating alongside him.
As Tory and Ebony emerged from the cart, they and Peter are startled by a cherub employee who calmly questioned their presence. Peter, hesitant but determined, admitted their mission. The cherub, with a suspicious demeanor, simply responded, "Okay." Tension hung heavy in the air until Peter moved to activate the portal. Suddenly, the cherub's eyes turned yellow, and they attacked Peter. Tory and Ebony, shocked, swiftly intervened, wrestling the possessed cherub away. As Tory and Ebony helped Peter to his feet, the trio found themselves surrounded by all the cherubs in the building, their eyes glowing yellow—a sign of Adina's possession.
As the trio stood together, the cherubs spoke with Adina's voice, urging loyalty to her as if she were gospel. To make things worse, Fitch, donning golden armor and wielding a trident, appeared from the crowd. Peter, shocked and betrayed, realized Adina's true role in recent events, and Tory, picking up on Peter's shock, incredulously asked Peter if he believed him at all, to which Peter just somberly apologized to Tory. Fitch butted in, laughing and telling Tory that Peter has a problem with putting faith in his "friends." Tory and Ebony expressed disbelief and defended Peter, while Fitch continued taunting Peter about his past unfaithfulness. Adina reveled in all the discord, mocking Peter's loyalty and suggesting he doesn't belong in Heaven. She challenged whether he had changed since he denied an "old friend," giving him the choice to be spared from Adina and Fitch's crusade as long as he denied Tory and Ebony.
Despite Adina's tempting offer, Peter remained steadfastly loyal to Tory and Ebony, refusing to betray them. Adina shrugged nonchalantly and authorized Fitch to execute them. Thinking quickly, Peter utilized his powers to create a blinding flash, instructing Tory and Ebony to shield their eyes. Seizing the opportunity, Peter dashed towards the portal, urging his friends to find safety and assuring them that they could handle the situation. Before he left through the portal, Tory and Ebony thanked Peter for not giving them up, to which he gave them a grin and nod. Thanks to Peter's diversionary tactic, Tory and Ebony managed to escape. However, their getaway was hindered when Fitch unleashed his dragon pets to pursue them.
In "For Heaven's Sake", Tory and Ebony are still being chased by Fitch's dragon pets, though they both manage to shake them off by running into town, where they both bare witness to Adina and Fitch rising to the top of Halo Tower, the former openly announcing her hegemonic crusade to conquer Heaven and erase all sin and resistance, before using her powers to manipulate Heaven itself. Tory is deeply disheartened by the seemingly insurmountable power of Adina. However, his hope is restored by the return of Serenity and Peter. Serenity emboldens Tory with unwavering determination and a message of faith, hope, and charity, inspiring him to ask about her plan to resist Adina's tyranny.
As Adina and Fitch initiate their conquest, Tory flies beside Serenity when she confronts Adina. Adina and Fitch create an army of artificial angels to deal with Serenity and her friends, and Tory battles these forces alongside them. However, Ebony and the Exorcists appear as the cavalry, slaughtering these artificial angels. When Serenity and Saint Peter began to fly up Halo Tower to confront Adina and Fitch, Tory attempted to follow them. However, Serenity and Peter told him to stay back despite his willingness to help, the former saying that he has done so much already and that she does not want him to get hurt. Tory seemingly listens and watches them reach the peak of the tower.
Tory eventually cannot help himself and travels to the top of the tower, watching from the sidelines, too terrified to really do much. That is, until after Serenity is rendered unconscious by Fitch upon him assuming his draconic form. Tory telegraphs Fitch's attempts to kill her with his fire breath and, in a courageous act of self-sacrifice, Tory - completely disregarding his own life - shields Serenity with his body, using his shell to protect her from the deadly blast of fire. This act of bravery leaves Tory severely injured and seemingly dead.
Serenity and Saint Peter are devastated by Tory's sacrifice, with Serenity cradling his unresponsive body and desperately begging him to respond. St. Peter is so consumed by rage, that he summons the Spear of Heaven and begins kicking the everliving shit outta Fitch. Peter ultimately triumphs over Fitch, leading to Fitch dying by his own hand and Adina's subsequent fury. Adina is eventually defeated by Sera and Serenity, ending her reign of terror.
In the aftermath of the battle, Serenity and Sera descend into Halo City, greeted by the denizens with blessings and cheers. While Sera tends to the angels, Serenity rushes through the crowd and finds Tory laying on the side, his shell broken from his heroic sacrifice. Kneeling beside him, tears welling in her eyes, Serenity places a hand on his shell and asks why he risked his life for her. To her surprise, Tory, still alive but weak, replies that he did it because she always believed in him. Overcome with relief, Serenity gasps and gently picks Tory up, placing him in her lap as he looks up at her with a weak smile. Tory, delirious, his shell broken, and even blinded from the attack, asks Serenity where she is as he is unable to see, but Serenity shushes him, cradling him close in a hug as he closes his eyes, finding comfort in her embrace despite his state of agony, blindness, and near-death.
After, Asherah descends upon the crowd, knowing of Tory's near-sacrifice. Asherah commends Tory for his remarkable courage and bravery, noting his total disregard for his own safety. By providing crucial information about Adina's plan and risking his life to save Serenity, he selflessly empowered her to defeat Adina, nearly sacrificing his own life in the process. With that, Asherah uses her magic to revitalize Tory, transforming him into a guardian angel celebrated for his heroism and loyalty. His actions serve as a testament to the values of faith, hope, and charity that Serenity had championed, reinforcing these virtues among Heaven's denizens.
Much later, during a celebration, Tory and many other angels witness Sir Pentious ascension into Heaven, Tory himself having a wide-expressioned look on his face and using his shell to catch Saint Peter as he fainted.
Personality[]
Tory has a cheerful and optimistic demeanor, yet harbors a hint of anxiety and speaks in gentle tones. Despite his youth, he endeavors to serve his kingdom in even the smallest of ways, dedicated to upholding the principles of benevolence endorsed by Heaven and the C.H.E.R.U.B He eagerly seeks opportunities to shoulder additional responsibilities, aspiring to ascend to the role of a guardian angel.
While shadowing Beau, Honey, and Bea on their missions, Tory proved to be an easily overwhelmed individual prone to shock and disbelief in the face of unexpected and chaotic situations. He seems caring and concerned for his three superiors' plight, expressing fear and confusion about their actions and choices, but also struggling to fully comprehend or manage the circumstances surrounding them. He frequently points out the flaws and failures in their missions, being honest and showing concern for the well-being of those they are meant to protect. Tory's critical thinking and compassion are highlighted when he insists on helping a stranded submarine crew, due to him being the only aquatic cherub in the group..
Despite being easily scared, Tory often shows a complete disregard for his own safety. In the heat of the moment, he is willing to risk his life to protect and even die for others without a second thought, something that is almost instinctive to him. This was shown when he used his own shell as a speed bump to prevent a speeding vehicle from running into innocent civilians. In the final fight against Fitch and Adina, Tory showed his selflessness by shielding Serenity from Fitch's deadly attack, resulting in him being blinded and his shell nearly destroyed. This particular act of selflessness is what finally earns him the title of guardian angel ordained by Asherah.
During his time with the three cherubs, Tory becomes more critical of the three and openly acknowledges their seeming incompetence. During these missions, he even stepped up to fix the problem himself, showing his problem solving abilities without even realizing it. He continued to witness with the harsh realities of his partners' behavior deepen his disillusionment. The horrifying discovery of Honey's violent actions and drug use, as well as the incompetence and moral laxity displayed by Bea and Beau, further strained his optimism and patience as the missions went on.
Ultimately, these missions left Tory disheveled and emotionally drained. He even becomes more hot-tempered as he harshly criticizes the three and snaps at them for their blunders and later appeared silently bitter when Beau and Honey took all the credit for what was essentially his own hard work, visibly scowling at them, rebuking them and treating them coldly. represent their missions, encapsulates his internal struggle and the profound impact of his disheartening week.
Even after all that happened, Tory remained surprisingly forgiving, as he did not tell Leo Lightheart of his superiors' blunders, against his better judgement.
Appearance[]
Tory is a small, round, cute turtle cherub with a pale green shell and large, pink eyes with long eyelashes. He has white wings and a halo above his head, accessorizing with a large pink bow around his neck.
Powers[]
- Cloudwalking: At one point, Tory was shown casually sitting on a cloud in order to citygaze.
- Flight: Along with his fellow cherubim, Tory possesses the ability to soar and glide through the air propelled by his wings. Despite the weight of his shell, he demonstrates remarkable agility and swiftness, capable of traversing the skies with impressive speed and grace.
- Nigh-Invulnerability: Tory's shell is nearly impervious, providing him great protection when he retracts into it. He was able to use his shell as a speed bump to stop a speeding truck without injuring himself, and most notably, his shell allowed him to shield Serenity from a jet of holy fire from Dragon Fitch, though this attack still left Tory severely injured, blinded him, and nearly left his shell in pieces. Tory's shell also can activate a holy shield, so that any blunt objects or weapons that hit him redirect back at the assailant, allowing him to "attack" his assailants without even trying.
- Teleportation: Tory can instantly teleport to a desired location through a bright flash of light.
- Weapon Summoning: Like all other Cherubs, Tory has the ability to summon an angelic weapon that's unique to him.
Relationships[]
Allies[]
Serenity[]
Tory's bond with Serenity is depicted as warm and affectionate, evident when he greets her with a nuzzle upon being tasked with summoning her and Saint Peter to Heaven's Courtroom. In turn, Serenity offers encouragement and support for Tory's aspiration to ascend as a guardian angel, empathizing with his desire for greater responsibility, having experienced similar aspirations herself.
At one point, Tory expressed a desire to be Serenity's guardian angel, showing his protective nature and willingness to support her despite his young age, even attempting karate moves to demonstrate his readiness, although he clumsily fell. Serenity gracefully helped him up and reassured Tory that while she believes he will be an amazing guardian angel, he doesn't need to defend her because she is stronger than she appears and capable of handling challenges on her own.
Ebony[]
Tory and Ebony have a little brother-big sister dynamic, and it is implied that they have known each other for some time.
When Tory, in a state of panic, confided in Ebony about he dangerous secret of Adina's deceit he discovered in the Heavenly Court, Ebony quickly shifted from lighthearted to serious, showing deep concern for his well-being. Despite her initial surprise and confusion, Ebony took immediate action to calm Tory and even protected him, risking her own life in the process, when she realized he was in danger.
Later, when they were cornered by Adina and Fitch, Ebony defended Tory from the wrath and threats of Fitch and Adina, showing that she naturally has a protective instinct towards him.
Quotes[]
Holy Hell[]
- "Tory: Y'know, Serenity... maybe I could be your guardian angel! I know sometimes you get push-back just because you believe sinners can change. If anyone give you trouble, I'll touch down and be like 'leave my friend alone'! (he does karate moves, during which he attempts a backflip kick, only to land on the back of his shell, his wings stuck under his shell; he futilely kicks to try and get back upright) Oh, fiddlesticks...
Serenity: (she giggles, gently helping Tory get back upright before kneeling to be closer to his level) You alright?
Tory: (he sighs) Yeah, just my pride... Is my shell scratched?
Serenity: (she looks intently at his shell) Hmm... nope!
Tory: Woo! That's a relief...
Serenity: You're gonna be an amazing guardian angel one day, Tory. But don't you ever, EVER feel like you have to defend me, okay? I'm much stronger than I look, and if anyone ever tries to mess with me, I can handle it alone. Besides, I have plenty of angels looking out for me. I know there's a lotta souls out there that could use a shell to lean on!" - — Serenity and Tory.

Tory: Honey... How could you do the devil's powder?!

Tory: (about eight seconds straight of Honey crying and Tory just hovering with a thousand-yard-stare; he is terrified, trying to deflect) Wh- What was the opium den incident, by the way...?
Honey: (she sniffs, wiping her mascara, though more falls from her face) Me and Bea... were trying to redeem some shitty rock star - no, a DEVIL. ...We were trying to get life back on track. But he took us backstage and tempted us with some of his Midnight Oil...
Tory: Ohhhhh, fuck...
Honey: ...And then we got so fucked up that we didn't even notice our client was on the ground OD'ING RIGHT BEFORE OUR FUCKING EYES!!!! HE WAS OD'ING ON THE FUCKING FLOOR AND WE WERE SO HIGH OUTTA OUR FUCKING MINDS THAT WE WERE POINTING AND LAUGHING! (Honey wails, crying into her hands and clinging onto Tory for emotional support)
Tory: (he squeaks out) Honey... how did you possibly think-
Honey: It was the 80s, Tory... We- We thought he was trying to do The Worm...
Tory: (Tory looks completely shell-shocked, his pupils dilated) what the fuck..." - — Tory and Honey.
- "Beau: See that, lil' brah? We did it. (he pats Tory's shell as Tory glares daggers at him) Look at you, worryin' over a big bowl of nothin'...
Tory: (bitterly) Don't touch me.

- "Tory: EBONY!!! (He flies up to Ebony, panting and looking terrified.)
Ebony: (Surprised by him, she takes a pause from cleaning the horses, releasing it back into the nearby stable.) Huh... Hi, Tory. You okay? You look... Frazzled. Like you just saw a ghost, or something. (She giggles as Tory's eyes are bloodshot and sunken, he's sweating from his shell, trying to catch his breath. Ebony notices this and stops laughing, disturbed. She slowly walks over to him as the severity of the situation dawns on her.) Hey... you okay? Like, seriously...
Tory: (He speaks rapidly, causing Ebony to recoil.) IwasintheHeavenlyCourtandsawsomethingIREALLYshouldn'thave! There'sroyalgurdslookingformeRIGHTNOW!! (He retracts into his shell.)
Ebony: (Her mask has a swirly-eyed expression before she shakes her head, putting her hands up.) Whoa, whoa, whoa, slow down! (She gently grabs Tory by his shell to calm down down.) Y'know, for a turtle, you sure speak really fast. (She sighs, looking down into the slit of Tory's shell.) Like...What did you see?
Tory: (His large eyes pop out from the slit. He scans the area before whispering) Adina... She's been... Harvesting the prayers of tortured sinners...
Ebony: (Her eyes widen.) Oh, my God...
Tory: She's been using that power to keep Heaven under her control. I- I- I was eavesdropping... But they spotted me. (He's shaking in his turtle shell.) They sent the guards after me... I think they want to silence me... (He trembles violently in his shell, on the verge of hyperventilating.)
Ebony: (She blinks a few times and releases Tory, seeming to be processing this.) Damn, this is big... I mean, I called Adina being wacko, but... Silence you...? What do you mean they want to... Silence you? W-Why would they want to do that?
Tory: BECAUSE THEY DON'T WANT THIS NEWS GETTING OUT!!! (Tory hides in his shell to where his body isn't visible to Ebony, only his shaking shell. There is an unmistakable aura of dread going on.)
Ebony: T- Tory... They wouldn't wanna kill you, right? (Suddenly, Ebony sees two of Adina's drones in the horizon, scanning for Tory. A cold dread grips Ebony as her eyes widen) ...Oh, my God! (She glances at Tory.) We, uh... we have to hide! (Tory is just shaking in his shell, it's his only defense, after all. He's a sitting duck, overcome with fear. Ebony's eyes widen, panic rising as the drones make their way over to them. She grabs Tory by the shell, pulling him into a tight embrace and trying to hide his trembling body with her own to obscure the drone's scanners. Tension reaches its highest as the drone scans Ebony and Tory, Ebony hunching over to shield Tory, closing her eyes and holding his as closely as possible... Miraculously, it's enough for the scanners to not pick up on Tory. Both drones fly off into the sky, creating a small shockwave from their intense flight. Slowly opening her eyes, Ebony breathes a sigh of relief, breathing shakily. Still holding Tory, she whispers quietly.) W-We're okay, Tory... We're okay..." - — Ebony protecting Tory after he uncovered a conspiracy.

- "Serenity: (She kneels down towards the injured, seemingly dead Tory.) Oh, Tory... (She begins sniffling, wiping her face as a deluge of tears fall from her eyes.) Why'd you have to do it...?
Tory: (Struggling to speak.) C- 'Cuz... (He slowly opens his eyes, though blinded.) 'Cuz you always believed in me, Serenity...
Serenity: (She gasps, covering her mouth, shocked but relieved that Tory is still alive!) T- Tory! (She puts a comforting hand on his broken shell.)
Tory: (He has a glazed, distant look in his clouded eyes, not making eye contact with Serenity.) Serenity, where are you...? Everything's so-
Serenity: (She pets his shell.) Shhhh... Everything's alright. You did amazing, sweetheart... (She pulls Tory onto her lap, hugging him tightly as he sighs and closes his eyes.)" - — Serenity and Tory in the aftermath of the final battle.
